Fialova claims first title
in first Polish event
It
was the first WISPA event in Poland and very much the first at the
seven court centre, which only opened in the days leading up to the
event!
Both finalists, England's Victoria Lust and the Czech
Republic's Lucie Fialova, have been flirting with the top
fifty, and the maturing Czech now looks set to move inside next
month. Lust started by taking the fight to her opponent, never
fearing to try for a winner, while covering ripostes as Fialova, a
year the elder at 21, also went short regularly.
But then the English girl lost her way in the second, was denied a
decision in the third at nine all that she thought would take her to
game ball, which instead went the way of her opponent, who converted
at the second attempt.
With Lust’s consistency gone Fialova mopped up to take her first
WISPA Tour title in front of a gallery where there was not an inch
of space unoccupied.
The
winner paid tribute to the Squash4You who had staged an event in a
way that befitted a much larger championship, saying how well all
the players had been looked after, adding, "Last time I lost to her
3/0 but hoped to do better this time without expecting to win.
"It’s my first title and it is very special to me."
Lust commented: "Lucie played well. She found a good length and a
strong boast and I lost my way. I made too many errors and couldn’t
construct rallies.
"I’m disappointed. That’s life, That’s squash!"
Club director Przemek Debrecki was pleased with his debut event:
"Squash will now be more popular in Krakow. The media and
advertising mean that many people will start thinking about squash
and playing. This is a big advance so the event has been a very big
success for us."

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE – POLISH SQUASH
CONFERENCE IN KRAKOW
A feature of the WISPA event in Krakow was the one day conference
hosted by Maciek Maciantowicz’s company MM Sport, which brought
together people who have or will be investing in the squash
infrastructure in Poland. From existing clubs to prospective owners,
no less than eighty people attended.
Presentations were given on court construction, materials, squash
equipment and other related matters. WISPA Chief Executive Andrew
Shelley provided an international perspective on squash and the
brand new Squash4You facility was toured.
Poland already features a squash community of around twenty thousand
players and with the commitment to building being shown is sure to
grow in the coming years.
The value of the conference in this process was clear from comments
such as those from Roman Kotra from the town of Rzezsow:
"It was very interesting with lots of information. This was the
first conference like this in Poland and I am now thinking even more
seriously about building a centre where I live."
SQUASH4YOU
Squash4You is a sensational new centre opened at the start of the
week in Krakow, Poland’s second city.
The brainchild of Maciek Maciantowicz, who with partners Rafak Chart
& Przemek Debecki and using a design by Viola. Maciantowicz’s wife,
it features seven glassback courts, along with sauna, massage, café.
An old glassblowing factory became Squash4You in a mere ten months
from inception, through construction and into opening with the McWil
WISPA Polish Open this week.
Wolfgang Denk of court constructor Mcwil was effusive. "This centre
is a milestone for Eastern Europe. It is a very stylish club and a
benchmark on how a modern club should look and be managed," he said.
A week in and all seven courts are sold out every evening! The
formula certainly works so where next for Squash4You?
