Razik & Illingworth set up North American clash in California

The top two squash players in Canada and the USA go head-to-head in the semi-finals of the Pacific Athletic Club Open after Shahier Razik and Julian Illingworth came through the quarter-finals.

Top seed Razik, the Canadian number one ranked 30 in the world, ended qualifier Fabien Verseille's run, beating the Frenchman in  straight games. Fourth seed Illingworth, the four-time US champion from Portland, needed 51 minutes to overcome New Zealander Campbell Grayson, the No7 seed.

The other semi-final will be an Anglo/Mexican affair after second-seeded Englishman Jonathan Kemp despatched Welsh qualifier Jethro Binns in just 27 minutes. Kemp will take on Eric Galvez, the third seed from Mexico who defeated Egyptian Yasser El Halaby.

26-Mar, Round One:

Verseille & Binns
Progress At Pacific Club

Qualifiers Fabien Verseille and Jethro Binns secured unexpected places in the quarter-finals of the Pacific Athletic Club Open after impressive upsets on the opening day at the Pacific Athletic Club in Redwood City in the US state of California.

Welshman Binns scored the biggest scalp, beating fifth-seeded Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira in 71 minutes.

The 24-year-old world No 117 from Bristol now takes fellow Briton Jonathan Kemp - ranked almost 80 places higher. The No2 seed from England recovered from a game down to beat Colombian qualifier Bernardo Samper.

Verseille - at 185, the lowest-ranked player in the draw - conquered Canadian David Phillips, the No8 seed.

The 23-year-old Frenchman now tackles the top seed Shahier Razik, also a Canadian. Razik, the world No30 from Toronto, was taken to four games by LA-based Belgian Stefan Casteleyn, a former world No7, before winning in 55 minutes.

hello framby!!
