New Zealand Nationals 2010
20-22 Aug, Whakatane

Waikato & Wellington take team titles

Waikato and Wellington have taken out the titles at the national teams squash championship in Whakatane.

Waikato picked up its second title of the week with victory over Wellington in the women's final, following on from Joelle King's victory in the individual event on Friday. What made it all the more impressive was that King did not play in the teams event.

However, Wellington would not be denied in the men's event, making up for the women's disappointment with victory over Auckland in the title decider.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's rising talent has been recognised with the awards for the most improved players of the year. Canterbury's Paul Coll was named the most improved male, after playing a starring role for New Zealand at this month's Junior World Squash Champs in Ecuador. Fellow teenager Megan Craig picked up the women's award, making it two from two for Canterbury.

There was also an award for the referee of the year, which went to Mid Canterbury's Chris Buckland. He also won the award in 2008 and has been appointed as a referee for the October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Final team placings
Women: 1. Waikato, 2. Wellington, 3. Canterbury, 4. Central,
5. Auckland, 6. Southland, 7. Bay of Plenty, 8. Otago,

Men: 1. Wellington, 2. Auckland, 3. Waikato,4. Canterbury, 5. Bay of Plenty, 6. Central

Meanwhile, there is also a new men's national champion, with Campbell Grayson taking out the title. The world number 42 was too good for Wellington's Evan Williams in the final, winning 15-13, 11-1, 11-5.

Williams gatecrashes men's final

Evan Williams has caused a monumental upset in the semifinals of the NZ National Squash Championships in Whakatane.

The 20-year-old Wellingtonian has bundled world number 43 Martin Knight out of the tournament, winning their semifinal 11-5,11-9, 4-11, 11-9. It is by far the biggest win of his career.

Williams will now face top seed Campbell Grayson in the title decider. Grayson is through after an 11-6, 11-5,11-9 victory over younger brother Alex Grayson.

No sweat for seeds on Day One

Fatigue doesn't appear to have been a problem for the top seeds at the Ocean Ford New Zealand National Squash Championships in Whakatane.

Six of the country's top players have just returned from an invitational doubles event in Melbourne, but they have quickly switched into singles mode without too many problems.

In fact, it was a good day for all the seeded players, with only two of the top eight seeds in either draw bowing out. Men's seventh seed Lance Beddoes lost his second round match to Philip Buscke 3/1 while eighth seed Christopher Lloyd went down 3-2 to Bryce Redman.

A quick switch back into singles mode for New Zealand's top squash players.

Six of the country's top stars have just returned from the invitational doubles event in Australia, and will line up in the New Zealand national championships in Whakatane.

It will be a good test of the versatility of Jaclyn Hawkes, Joelle King, Tamsyn Leevey, Kylie Lindsay, Campbell Grayson and Martin Knight, with the demands of the two games quite different.

Hawkes is the top seed in the women's event and is expected to meet King in the title decider on Sunday. However, both Leevey and Lindsay will have their eyes firmly on causing an upset come semifinals time on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Grayson and Knight are expected to fight it out for the men's title. The kiwi rivals are neck and neck in the world rankings, with Grayson currently at number 42 in the world, one ahead of Knight.

The national championships get underway at midday today.

Seeds - Women:
1. Jaclyn Hawkes (Auckland)
2. Joelle King (Waikato)
3. Tamsyn Leevey (Wellington)
4. Kylie Lindsay (Waikato)

Men:
1. Campbell Grayson (Auckland)
2. Martin Knight (Wellington)
3. Evan Williams (Wellington)
4. Alex Grayson (Auckland)
Kitchen sidelined

Frustration for New Zealand squash star Shelley Kitchen.

The former world number six is sitting out this weekend's national championships in Whakatane due to illness. Kitchen is resting on doctor's orders.

She also missed the invitational doubles event in Australia earlier this week.

It is an inconvenient break for Kitchen, who is currently preparing for October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the Women's World Team Championships in Palmerston North in November. The 30-year-old had her first child in February, but has trained hard to get back into shape to represent New Zealand at the two events.

King set on becoming Queen
