28-Jun:
Corren claims title number 21
Andrew Dent reports
Mike
Corren’s late career resurgence continued on Sunday when he took out
the NSW Open squash tournament, the 21st title of his 10-year
professional career.
South Australian Corren beat 21-year-old Queenslander Nathan
Stevenson in an epic final 9-11, 12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3 to win his
third tournament of the year.
Earlier New Zealand’s Joelle King won the second title of her young
career when she upset top seed Lisa Camilleri 8-11, 12-10, 11-5,
11-4 in the women’s final.
Corren, 35, won his first Professional Squash Association title in
Barcelona in 2000 and has kept winning since that time in a career
that has seen him based in Australia, the US, Malaysia and now New
Zealand.
He semi-retired from the tour at the end of 2008 but has maintained
his fitness in a series of non-tour and Challenger events.
His win over Stevenson was the second in a final this year,
following a straight games win to take out the Golden Open in
Kalgoorlie in May.
The
20-year-old King came back from losing the first game against
Camilleri to deny the Queenslander her first NSW Open title.
King broke through to win her first title in 2008 on her way to a
career-high world ranking of 42 in a year that also saw her reach
the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
She has had a disappointing 2009 although she did win her last
tournament, a Challenger event in New Zealand.
But she will now head to next week’s Victorian Open in Melbourne
full of confidence after downing Camilleri, the world number 35.

Corren hunting title number 21
Andrew Dent reports
Adelaide’s Mike Corren will be chasing the 21st title of his
professional squash career when he takes on Queenslander Nathan
Stevenson in the final of the NSW Open in Sydney on Sunday.
The New Zealand-based Corren downed Victorian Steven Robinson 10-12,
11-5, 11-2, 11-8 in Saturday’s semi-finals to set up a repeat of the
Golden Open decider earlier this year, where he beat Stevenson in
straight games to take out title number 19.
Corren then won his 20th tournament when he claimed the North Island
Championship in New Zealand two weeks ago.
Stevenson reached his second career final with an upset four games
win over third seeded South Australian Justin Beard.
In a tight match the Queenslander claimed victory 11-8, 11-9, 4-11,
14-12 to underline his rapid improvement over the past three months.
The women’s final will be a clash of the top two seeds as Lisa
Camilleri cruised through with a straight games win over New
Zealander Amada Cranston and second seed Joelle King ended
the giant killing run of Brisbane’s Samantha Davies.
Camilleri will be after her seventh title after she beat Cranston
11-5, 11-3, 11-6 while New Zealander King, who downed Davies 11-9,
12-10, 11-3, will be looking to claim her second tournament.

Unseeded Davies upsets
Francis to reach NSW semis
Andrew Dent reports
Brisbane’s Samantha Davies caused two major shocks on the
opening day of the NSW Open squash tournament in Sydney on Friday as
she stormed into the semi-finals.
Davies, 20, downed seventh seed Sarah Cardwell in the first round
before disposing of third seeded Melody Francis in the quarters.
She now takes on second seed Joelle King of New Zealand for a place
in Sunday’s final and said she had nothing to lose.
“I played both Joelle and Melody in juniors but I haven’t gone
overseas for tournaments like they have, so I was worried there
would be a big gap in experience,” Davies said.
“So there is no pressure on me at all – I will just go out there and
relax.”
Davies credits her good form to some intensive training and a new
attitude on court.
“I’ve been training a lot over the past few months and I’ve done a
lot of work,” she said.
“I am more relaxed on court and I think it’s paying off for me.”
Top seed Lisa Camilleri cruised into the last four with
straight games wins over Adelaide’s Alma Kushartanti in the first
round and New Zealander Emma Miller in the quarters.
She plays another Kiwi, fifth seed Amanda Cranston, in the
semi-finals.
There was another big upset in the men’s draw when Ipswich’s
Peter Taylor ousted second seeded New Zealander Graeme Wilson in
the first round.
Taylor won 5-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 to become the only unseeded player
in the quarter-finals.
