Malaysian Double in KL
Andrew Cross reports

Two home winners for Malaysia in the first NSC series of 2012 as both top seeds claimed the titles, Asyraf Azan in the men's and Siti Muniroh in the Women's.

Siti won a very long and tight match with Liu Tsz Ling of Hong Kong to end her losing run in her previous six finals of WSA events.

The match lasted just under an hour and swung on a tight third where the Malaysian received two strokes at 10-all.

In the men's event Asyraf got the better of compatriot Elvinn in three close games.

Elvinn played well but Asyraf seem to have the edge at the beginning and end of games and it proved to be the difference.

Malaysia guaranteed a winner
Andrew Cross reports

Malaysia will be guaranteed at least one winner in the NSC series as both Asyraf Azan and Elvinn Keo made it to the men's final that will be played on Monday evening in Bukit Jalil.

Asyraf started his match in his own unique way looking for the cross court nick at every opportunity and though he found himself in trouble at stages a few lucky nicks off cross courts helped him gain the first game 11/9. The second was similar with Asyraf sneaking it 11/9. In the third the Malaysian went completely walk about and was punished 11/1. In the fourth he regained focus and closed out the match 11/4.

Keo needed five games to see off last weeks winner in Poland Peter Creed. At the beginning Peter seemed to struggle to get Elvinn behind him and Elvinn led 10.5 before Peter upped the intensity and found better length and evened the game at 10.10 before he lost width on his cross courts and Elvinn punished him.

Elvinn won the second and led in the third 5/3 before Peter turned it around to win the next two games and force a deciding 5th. Elvinn just squeezed home in the fifth despite a strong fight from Peter and a few fortunate decisions that went his way.

In the women's draw Siti Muniroh made it into her 7th WSA final and will be hoping to finally convert that into a win as she beat fellow compatriot Pushppa Devi. The first went to a tie break but the second and the third were fairly comfortable.

Tomorrow she will face Liu Tsz Ling after she beat yesterdays hero Tan Yan Xin for a place in the final. Yan Xin took the first game but Ling fought back to take the second and raced off to a 7/2 lead in the third and then converted that to 11/4. The fourth was close again but the Hong Kong player came through 11/8. Ling will be in her second final in just over a week after she finished runner up in Australia last week.

28-Jan:
Quarters in KL
Andrew Cross reports

Yan xin causes the only upset as she is the only seed outside of the top 4 to make it to the semi finals.

Yan Xin defeated Hong Kong player Carmen Lee in four games to progress to the semi finals where she will play Liu Tsz Ling after Ling defeated Zulhijjah Azan in three close games.

In the other quarter finals top seed Siti Muniroh defeated her younger compatriot Vanessa Raj, after dominating the first two games Raj held game balls in the third at 10.8 before losing out.

Siti will play Pushppa Devi who again needed five games this time to see off Rachel Arnold. Today went all the way to 11.8 in the fifth before a few tins from Rachel gave Pushppa the victory.

In the men's tournament the seeds progressed slightly easier than yesterday.

Asyraf beat Aamir Khan three games to zero and he will sure to have a tough match tomorrow against Bader Al Hussaini who needed five games to beat English man James Earles who was leading 2.1 and leading in the fourth and fifth 5.2 before the Kuwaiti player turned it around.

Peter Creed set up a show down with Second seed Elvinn Keo after they both recorded victories in three games. Both games were close and with only a few points separating the four players some refereeing decisions proved crucial.

27-Jan:
Round One in KL
Andrew Cross reports

All the seeds progressed in the women's draw with only two matches not finishing 3.0.

Top seed Siti Munirah set up a second round clash with Vanessa Raj after both recorded relatively comfortable victories over Zoe Foo and Jadeleen Lee.
Pushppa Devi needed 5 games to see off a strong challenge from Aika Azman at a game that was level at 2.2 and 6.6 until Aika gifted 4 tins to Pushppa. Pushppa will play Rachel Arnold after she received a walk over.

Tan Yan Xin and Carmen Lee set up a show down tomorrow after they both won three games to nil.

The only other match that was extended passed three games was between Liu Tsz-Ling and Teh MIn Jie as the Malaysian won the first after a lot of mistakes from the second seed. After this Ling improved and always led despite a good effort from Min Jie.

It was a good day for the qualifiers and a tough day for the seeded players in the men's draw.

James Earles and Aamir Khan caused upsets in the main draw as they progressed to the quarter finals. Khan beat Choong Kam Hing in three games as the Malaysian looked to be struggling with his movement.

Earles beat Valentino Bong in four close games and even made a comeback from 8.1 down in one game to make it through.

Asyraf looked to have a tough match on paper against James Huang and so it proved as they went the full distance.

Longest match of the day went to Josh Cardwell and Shinosuke as they played for well over 90mins as the match took a few momentum shifts before the Australian made it past the Japanese player. Josh led 2.0 before Shin fought back to force a fifth, but Josh started better and led 8.1 before a brief fight back and eventually Josh closed out the match.

In a similar match on the court next to Josh his room mate and opponent for tomorrow Peter Creed was finding himself in a similar position against Mahesh Mangoanakor as he led two games to love before fighting it out in the fifth. The flying Welsh men doing some of his trade mark dives across the floor to retrieve shots.

In the final matches of the night another qualifier made Elvinn Keo work extremely hard before the second seed put a string of points together from 5.5 in the fifth.

Elvinn will face Nathan Lake who won a tough battle will Ahmed Al-Sarajj from Jordan who moves and covers the court so well. Lake sneaking through in four tough games.

26-Jan:
Qualifying complete in KL
Andrew Cross reports

The top four qualifying seeds progressed to the Main draw of the competition at the hands of Malaysian Juniors in contrasting styles.

James Huang came through rather comfortably against Marcus Yuen 3/0 with Marcus seeming to be struggling from his five set match earlier in the day.

Hannan Tarmidi put up a brave fight against Aamir Khan who was much more experienced when it came to the end of games and crucial points.

James Earles managed to see off a strong challenge from Sanjay Singh as both left hander’s put on a good show, a game that was based around fine margins. Some longer rallies won by Earles seemed to be the turning point in the match as he held it together slightly better at the end of the games.

Mohammed Yaquop Hajeyah dominated the first and the fifth games when he took on Addeen Idrakie but had a slight wobble in the middle of the match which he eventually came through. A slight David vs Goliath match with the much smaller Malaysian covering a lot more of the court as the Kuwaiti was standing and holding the T with his considerable reach advantage.

The rewards for the qualifiers are matches against four more Malaysians who are more senior to the ones that they will have faced today.
