13-Aug, Qualifying
Finals:
Canadians progress at the NSA Open
Mike McCue reports
Four Canadians hailing from all parts of the experience spectrum
qualified for the main draw tonight.
James Van Staveren was first through by virtue of a 3-0 win
over Eric Dingle. The first game was tight, on account of
several tins from 'JVS', but he was able to navigate the crucial
stages and take the lead. This proved to be the turning point, as he
grew more confident in the next two games. James had more to offer
on the attack, and made a minimum of unforced errors.
Carter Robitaille beat Josh Hollings in a matchup
featuring two of Canada's most promising juniors. Robitaille had
more variety and impetus to take the ball short, and won each game
with increasing authority.
Nick Sachvie and Albert Shoihet, also of the same
junior generation but now into their 20's, squared off in the third
match. Albert employed his smooth racquet skills to good effect but
couldn't stay on top in the longer rallies. He staged a desperate
comeback to win the third on extra points but exhausted his reserves
in the process. Nick proceeded to take the fourth comfortably.
Ian Power is experience personified, as Shahjahan Khan
experienced firsthand tonight. Ian plays the game on his terms,
slowing down the pace and making his opponents run circles with
excellent spacing on the ball. He didn't give the young Khan a sniff
in the first two, but the Pakistani summoned all his tools for a
third game fightback. He was aggrieved by some refereeing decisions
in the tiebreak, but his complaints fell on deaf ears as the
Canadian veteran moved on.

Third time up for NSA Open
The
third annual Pace Credit Union/Smart Centres NSA Open will
once again take place in Toronto's Downsview Park next week, on the
beautiful McWill Glass Court at the National Squash Academy.
Hometown hero and role model Dane Sharp will try to maintain
his undefeated record in this event, although on paper Jan Koukal
is favoured for the title.
Dane faces a tricky first round opponent in the form of Japan's
Yuta Fukui (who has been training in Toronto since March), and a
potential semifinal against Aussie Scott Arnold, who has
never lost to the Canadian.
The
rest of the draw features multiple all-Canadian matchups including
Mike McCue v Fred Reid, Thomas Brinkman v Adrian Dudzicki
and Matt "the Duck" Serediak v Tyler Hamilton. These will
undoubtedly be no-holds-barred affairs.
The always entertaining qualifying event sees top Canadian juniors
Carter Robitaille, Alexi Gosset and Josh Hollings mixed in
with legends like Ian Power and newly-professional Nick
Sachvie.
This tournament, although in its infancy, has seen some remarkable
squash and drama in the first two editions.
Jamie Nicholls and Glenn Vernie will be providing live
on-site commentary for those interested.
