06-Jun, Semis:
#20 beckons for Corren in Hamiltom
Dary
Denvir reports
Australian
Mike Corren is just one win away from securing the 20th PSA
World Squash Title of his career.
The top seed is through to the final of the ASB North Island
Championships in Hamilton, New Zealand, after a straight games win
over surprise semifinalist Evan Williams from Wellington. The young
kiwi had earlier upset fourth seeded Australian Josh Cardwell in the
quarterfinals, but Corren proved too good in the semis, winning 11-7
11-9 11-7.
The 35-year-old Aussie will face second seeded New Zealander
Graeme Wilson in the final. Wilson advanced with an 11-8 7-11
14-12 11-7 victory over third seeded Australian Nathan Stevenson.
Meanwhile, the top two seeds are also through in the women's draw.
Tamsyn Leevey and Joelle King will again square off in
the title decider, a week after doing battle in the final of the
Wellington Open, which King won in five.
Leevey is through after a straight games victory over fourth seeded
teenager Amanda Cranston, while King was once again too good for
former world number one Leilani Rorani, cruising home 11-6 11-3
11-3.

Corren on course in Hamilton
A comfortable first up win for Australian Mike Corren at the PSA
Tour's North Island Open in Hamilton, New Zealand.
The top seed has cruised to an 11-4 11-2 11-5 victory over fellow
Aussie Brent Dunkley in the opening round. He will face young kiwi
Alex Grayson in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Corren is chasing the
20th PSA title of his career.
Second seeded New Zealander Graeme Wilson has also make light work
of his opening match, beating Australian Neeraj Aggarwal in straight
games, while third and fourth seeded Aussies Nathan Stevenson and
Josh Cardwell followed suit with 3-0 victories if their own.
The only upset came from Wellington teenager Evan Williams, who
knocked Australia's Luke Forster out of the tournament with an
impressive 11-7 11-9 11-8 victory.
In the women's draw, the top four seeds have made it through to the
quarterfinals unscathed.
Top seed Tamsyn Leevey had a bye in the opening round, before
accounting for Waikato's Alana Sincock 13-11 11-5 11-4.
Second seed Joelle King also had a free ride into the second round,
but had to work a little harder to make the last eight, beating
Central's Danielle Fourie in four. No such drama for third seed
Leilani Rorani and fourth seed Amanda Cranston, who have both won
their opening two games 3-0.

Corren goes for 20th
Australian Mike Corren will chase the 20th PSA World Squash Tour
title of his career, when he lines up in the ASB North Island Open
in Hamilton, New Zealand this weekend.
The 35-year-old Aussie heads into the tournament in good form,
picking up title number 19 just last week, when he won the PSA
International Golden Open in Kalgoorlie, West Australia. Corren will
face compatriot Brent Dunkley in the opening round tomorrow night.
Standing in his way this weekend is second seeded kiwi Graeme
Wilson, while third seeded fellow Aussie Nathan Stevenson will be
gunning for revenge, after losing to Corren in the final at
Kalgoorlie.
In the non-tour women's draw, former world number 24 Tamsyn Leevey
is top seed and will have the benefit of a bye in the opening round
tomorrow night. Leevey may well get the chance to avenge last week's
defeat in the final of the Wellington Open, with rising New Zealand
star Joelle King seeded two. King won the title decider against
Leevey in Mana in five games.
Others gunning for the title will be former world number one Leilani
Rorani, who continues her comeback to top squash, and fourth seeded
teen Amanda Cranston. |
Rorani enters
in good faith
Leilani Rorani's religious beliefs are not keeping her off the
squash court not yet anyway.
The two-time British Open champion is entered in the North Island
championships starting in Hamilton today, despite the finals being
played on Sunday.
Rorani, a Mormon, refuses to play on Sundays. Squash New Zealand's
rules state players must be available to play on all three days of
the tournament.
Rorani's stance would create an awkward situation if she advances to
play on Sunday.
"I can only say that the last draw I saw had Leilani's name on it,"
SNZ chief executive Mike Thompson said last night.
"You take a players' good faith entry into the tournament and it's
great to see her playing," he said. |
