Niagara Classic 2009
20-25 Oct, Ontario, Canada, $6k

Final:

bt [2] Robin Clarke
            11-6, 11-5, 11-1 (37m)

Delasaux claims Niagara Classic
Louis Daignault reports

Qualifier Lawrence Delasaux of England continued to be a giant killer on the Canadian squash circuit on Sunday as he defeated Robin Clarke of Ottawa in the championship final at the Niagara Classic.

The event was also the third stop on the 2009-10 Canadian Squash Circuit and a tournament on the Professional Squash Association circuit.

Delasaux won the match 11-6, 11-5, 11-1 over the tournament’s second seed in 37 minutes. Two weeks ago at the Nash Cup in London, Ont., Delasaux lost in the final as a qualifier. He also beat Clarke in the semifinal at that tournament.

“Lawrence is simply playing a lot better than me at the moment,” said Clarke. “He’s difficult to read. We are both tall players but he uses a lot of deception and I never feel comfortable taking the ball early with him. But I played much better this time than the last time I faced him.”

Clarke reached his fifth career professional final. So far he has one victory which was in his hometown last year. The next stop on the circuit is in Ottawa in two weeks.

“I’m hoping Ottawa will be good for me again,” said Clarke, currently ranked 74th in the world. “I’ll be seeded third and I’m hoping I can knock off the top-two guys. I’m beating the players I should beat but I need to beat guys ahead of me in the world rankings.”

Robin Clarke advances to
final at Niagara Classic

Louis Daignault reports

Robin Clarke of Ottawa was feeling a lot better Saturday night after his semifinal victory over Neil Hitchens of England which put in the championship final at the Niagara Classic men’s professional squash tournament.

The event is also the third stop on the 2009-10 Canadian Squash Circuit and a tournament on the Professional Squash Association circuit.

Clarke, the tournament’s second-seed, beat Hitchens, seeded fourth, 11-8, 11-4, 2-11, 11-3.

“I wasn’t feeling that well today and I was little tired when I got on the court,” said Clarke. “But I beat Neil a couple of weeks ago 3-0 so I was confident I could win. But because of the way I was feeling I tried to slow down the match and focus more on a precision game.”

In Sunday’s final, Clarke faces qualifier Lawrence Delasaux of England. Delasaux beat Clarke two weeks ago in the semifinal at the Nash Cup in London, Ont., in straight games before losing the final. Delasaux, a former world top-60 player who is on the comeback trail, defeated top-seed Scott Arnold of Australia in the other semi.

“I feel I’ll be much better prepared for this match against Lawrence,” said Clarke. “Two weeks ago I really didn’t know what to expect. I hope to do better this time around.”

Two Canadians were eliminated in Friday’s quarterfinal. Dave Glass of Winnipeg lost to Clarke while Tyler Hamilton of Dundas, Ont., fell to Hitchens. Nick Sachvie of St. Catharines, Ont., Fred Reid of Markham, Ont., Tom Brinkman of Prince George, B.C., and Matthew Serediak of Regina were all eliminated in the first round.
