WISPA debut in Nepal

Himalayan News Service
LALITPUR: Nepali squash players put on a dismal show
as Deepika Pallikal of India and Kyle Lindsay of New
Zealand set the championship clash at the WISPA Players Championship
Nepal Open squash tournament here at the Squash Academy Sports
Complex today.
Deepika was in ominous form making easy inroads to the finals
defeating Gaby Schmohl of Switzerland 11-9, 11-9, 11-2 in the last
four.
Though the Indian was given a good challenge by the Swiss player in
the first two sets, Deepika took no time to win the third set 11-2.
The championship match for Deepika is certainly going to be a tough
one with Kyle making it to the final with a convincing 11-1, 12-10,
11-6 win over Adelweir-Nunan of South Africa. Kyle had defeated
Jahab Khan of Pakistan in quarter-finals.
The tournament — first of its kind in Nepal — however, could only
become a medium of gaining experience for Nepali women with none of
the players managing to cross five-point mark.
Bhawana Sunuwar lost to Gaby 11-0, 11-3, 11-5 and Krishna Thapa was
crushed by Deepkia 11-0, 11-3, 11-2.
Another Nepali participant at the event, Chhitiz Gurung crashed out
losing 11-2, 11-4, 11-2 against South African Adelweir.
With only eight players from six nations, the $8,000 cash prize
tournament was directly played from the quarter-finals. The event is
organised by Nepal Squash and Rackets Association under the auspices
of Women’s International Squash Players Association (WISPA). |

PREVIEW
Nepal Squash Rackets Association (NSRA) is proud to announce the
Women International Squash Players Association (WISPA) Professional
Championship in Nepal from 12 to 13 November 2010. This is the first
time that such international professional squash tournament is
taking place in Nepal. This high energy, entertaining competition
will be held at NSRA Squash Academy Sports complex, Satdobato,
Lalitpur. The WISPA Professional Squash Championship will attract
professional women squash players from all over the World.
The WISPA Championship is a professional squash tournament where 9
professional women squash players from all over the world will
participate.
This is a closed circuit professional championship. However, since
this is being held in Nepal, we have also been given the opportunity
to send in three of our women players to participate in the
championship. There is also prize money of US$8000.00. There will be
participants from 6 different countries India, South Africa,
England, Switzerland, Pakistan, New Zealand & Nepal.
The whole tournament is sponsored by Tom Tarintino from Philadelphia
USA. He is so one of the main sponsor of our courts at Satdobato and
he had also brought a team of the top WISPA players here in Nepal
after their tour of China in 2004 which included the current WISPA
world no:1 – Nicol David from Malaysia.
The purpose of the tournament would not only be arousing interest in
the game of squash in the country, but also start the process of
generating players from the grass roots level for future
international participation. Hence, Nepal Squash Rackets Association
plans to introduce the game to schools and the younger generation
right after this tournament. |
