Colets & Pontefract take
Men's & Women's titles
Paul Houghton reports
The Men’s O35 plate
final saw Wellington take on Beaconsfield, the first two
games of this tie were 5 set thrillers, both going
Beaconsfield’s way. Wellington pulled one back to make it
2-1 as the number #1 strings stepped on court. Mark
Treadwell of Beaconsfield took the game 3-1 against Darren
Gray to claim the title for Beaconsfield. Wellington won the
last match which made it a final tie score of 3-2 to
Beaconsfield.
The Men’s O45 final was Boston against Racquets Thame, Steve
Bateman of Thame took the early advantage with a
comprehensive 3-0 against David Stones. The #1 strings were
up next and Boston levelled the scores to 1 a piece with
Mark Hildred taking a 3-1 victory over Darren Withey. The
title was in the hands of Nigel Pattison of Thame and Colin
Fisher of Boston. Pattison started well and took the first
two games, Fisher fought back to take the 3rd, but couldn’t
push on from that. Pattison winning the game 3-1 and the
final for Racquets Thame.
The Junior Mixed final saw Pontefract take on Edgbaston
Priory. Maria Emmerson putting Pontefract ahead first with a
win over Edgbaston’s Alicia Mead. George Wileman and James
Earles both took 3-0 wins over Oliver Palmer and Nathan Lake
to take the title to Pontefract.
Duffield were guaranteed a winner in the Non County Mixed
final as it was Duffield 1 against Duffield 2. The contest
was played in great spirits but still very competitive.
Duffield 1 had the edge but only after two 50 minute 3-2
matches with the #1 and #2 strings! Duffield 1 claiming the
bragging rights on the way home with a 3-1 victory overall.
Mens O55 Final saw home club Nottingham take on Bourne.
Nottingham took the first game with Steve West taking a 3-0
victory over Paul Hudson-Oldnall. Steve Jackson levelled the
tie with a cracking 3-2 thriller, 10-9 in the fifth against
John Limb. The deciding match was between Alan Turner and
Allan Davidson, both players determined to take the title
home. It was Turner for Nottingham, coming back from 2-1
down, taking the game 3-2 in 54 minutes to give Nottingham a
club championship.
The Womens final started with Katie Quarterman taking the
advantage for Edgbaston as she beat Katie Smith 3-0. Becky
Botwright then stepped onto court for Pontefract to face
Vicky Hynes of Edgbaston. Hynes took the first game 11/5,
then what followed was 3 very tight games, all of them
finishing 11/9 and all of them going Pontefracts way as
Botwright won 3-1 to level the tie. Next up was Team Captain
Kirsty Mcphee who was faced with Edgbastons Julianne
Courtice. Mcphee put in a captains performance as she put
Pontefract 2-1 up with a 3-0 victory. It was the #1 string
Vanessa Atkinson who had the chance to win the title for
Pontefract and she didn’t falter. Emma Chorley gave her all
for Edgbaston but just couldn’t push Atkinson hard enough.
Atkinson taking it 3-0 and the title back to Pontefract for
the 10th time in the competitions 27 year history.

The Mens final saw the experience of Colets take on the
youth of Pontefract. Lee Drew and Sam Wileman got the final
underway with Drew taking the game 3-0. The #1 strings were
up next with Neil Cordell taking on Scott Handley. Cordell
took the first game 11/5 but couldn’t keep the momentum
going, Handley too strong and with too much experience as he
put Colets 2-0 up with a 3-1 win. Danny Meddings at #5
against George Wileman was the match that was to decide the
tie, Wileman gave his all but couldn’t quite take a game,
Meddings taking the first game 12/10 then pushed on to take
the last 2 games comfortably 11/1 11/3 and crowning Colets
the Mens Champions for the 4th year running and 11th title
overall since the competition begun.

Under way in Nottingham ...
Paul Houghton
reports
Colets turned up early, so early and eager to go that they
were actually in the club before me this morning!
They have arrived at The Park with a team that is strong
down the order and full of experience, they are faced with a
young side from Wolverhampton in the semi final. Lee Drew
and Scott Handley got the Colets boys off to a great start
with two 3-0 wins at strings #3 and #1 against Rich Birks
and Jamie Haycocks. Danny Meddings took the match against
Alan Griffiths 3-0 also to send Colets through to yet
another final in the National Club Championships. With Jesse
Englebrecht and Mark Cairns recording wins to tie things up
and confirming a 5-0 victory.
The Womens semi final saw Pontefract have a great battle
with Nottingham. Ponte took an early lead with Kirsty McPhee
beating Ria Kennerley 3-0, with Deon Saffery following suit
against Kira Peterson with a 3-0 win. The #5 strings were on
court as Vanessa Atkinson and Emma Beddoes started their
match, this swung back and forth with neither player giving
much away.
The #5 string result came in, Sue Pynegar of Nottingham
beating Marie Emmerson 3-1 as Atkinson and Beddoes continued
their own battle - 14/12 to Beddoes in the 3rd, 13/11 to
Atkinson in the 4th sending it into the 5th. The last game
wasnt any different and after 49 minutes it was Beddoes who
took the game and match 11/8. Leaving the tie nicely poised
at 2-2 it was all down to the 4th Strings to put their team
into the final.
Katie Smith from Ponte taking on Heidi Walters from
Nottingham, the first game was a close 11/9 and the second
11/7 both in Smiths favour. Smith was too strong and pushed
on in the 3rd, taking the game 11/2 to match 3-0 and an
overall victory for Pontefract 3-2.
Colets were also present with their Mens Over 35 team that
was made up of half their mens team! Danny Meddings and
Scott Handley recording victories over Paul Adams and Nathan
Hill from Dunnington to put Colets 2-0 up. Dave Peck who has
been in control of all Colets teams for what seems like
forever stepped onto court this year at #5 string and took
his game 3-1 against Ray Burke to win the title for his
team.
Edgbaston Priory managed to get the result they needed in
the Semi Final of the Junior Mixed plate that was played
against wimbledon, they now play thier final tomorrow
against Pontefract. The Men's Plate was played in great
spirits as Peterborough played Nottingham who took full
advantage of the home courts, running out 4-1 winners.
