Delasaux qualifies for final
as Canadian interest ends
Qualifier Laurence Delasaux of England eliminated number-two
seed Robin Clarke of Ottawa in three straight games in the
semifinals on Friday at the Nash Cup men’s professional squash
tournament being held this week at the London Squash Racquets Club.
“He really attacked a lot I couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said
Clarke, who was vying for a second career pro win. “He built a good
lead at the start of every game and that put me under pressure all
the time. I wasn’t able to play the way I wanted.”
Clarke was expecting a tough match.
“I knew it was going to be a hard one to win,” said Clarke. “He’s
well known for his shot ability and I just wanted to play it
straight and tight and tire him out. He’s really improved his
fitness level and I just didn’t play as well as I did earlier in the
tournament.”
Delasaux faces Bernardo Samper in the final, the
fourth-seeded Colombian beat England's Eddie Charlton, who had
stunned top seed Jan Koukaal in the quarters.

Quarters:
Eddie pulls off Canadian upset
Robin Clarke of Ottawa advanced to the semifinals at the Nash
Cup squash tournament on Thursday with a comfortable 11-5, 11-2,
11-7 victory over Neil Hitchens of England. The event is also the
second stop on the 2009-10 Canadian Squash Circuit.
There was a major upset as top-seed Jan Koukal of the Czech Republic
lost his quarterfinal match to fifth-seed Eddie Charlton of
England 11-3, 11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-5.
Clarke was pleased with his match.
“I thought I played better than yesterday,’’ said Clarke, the second
seed, who opened the tournament with a 13-11, 11-4, 11-7 win over
Charles Sharpe of England. ‘’I felt a lot more comfortable on the
court today.’’
Hitchens was seeded sixth and Clarke knew very little about his
opponent.
‘’I went to a training camp in England earlier this year and saw a
bit of his game,’’ said Clarke. ‘’Basically today I just tried to
set a pace to the match and see how he would respond. I’ve had a
great summer of training and feel really strong.
‘’I would love nothing more than to have a great showing here this
weekend and get the winter season off to a great start.’
Clarke’s next opponent is English qualifier Laurence Delasaux,
a former world top-60 player who is on the comeback trail. Delasaux
defeated Lefika Ragontse of Botswana.

Sachvie qualifies in Ontario
Nick Mount reports
Folks, the London Squash Racquets Club was buzzing with excitement
in anticipation of which qualifiers would move onto the NASH CUP
main draw. Let’s just say that the jam packed audience was not
disappointed with the action tonight.
The big story was Nick Sachvie’s (of the White Oaks Resort
and Spa in Niagara-on-the-lake) determined play.
Sachvie, down 2-0 to Thomas Brinkman of BC adjusted his pace,
played with patience and poise to square the match at 2-2. Sachvie
simply rode the wave of momentum from the previous two games to take
the fifth game 11-3.
Brinkman did show some moments of brilliance during the first two
games of the match. Look for Brinkman to do some damage on the
Canadian Squash Circuit in the near future.
Ryan Herden made it into the main draw through the “lucky
loser” option as Regardt Schonborn (3rd seed) is unable to attend
the event. Ryan, of the University of Western Ontario, will face
Lefika Ragontse of Botswana in the first round of the main draw.
Ryan’s coach, Jack Fairs (Head coach of the University of
Western Ontario) commentated “The whole team is excited about Ryan
being in the main draw. Ryan is an integral part of our varsity
team. We wish him well tomorrow night.”
