Four titles for Malaysia
Andrew Cross reports
Farez
Izwan got the ball rolling at 9am this morning with a
very comfortable win over Hong Kong player Kwok Kee Chu.
Farez Izwan who finished 3rd at this year’s British Junior
Open was never in trouble and ran out a comfortable 3-0
winner.
Next was Jadeleen Lee against Eleanor Epke of New
Zealand. Jadeleen started well taking the first 11-4, the
second was tight but she came through 11/9. The third was
tight all the way but Jadeleen took a mini advantage and
gained her first match ball at 11/10 but her serve just
clipped the bottom of the out line. Within a few more shots
Epke pulled a game back, and in a couple of minutes she had
levelled the match at 2-2. The fifth was very close all the
way and soon we were level at 10-10 and Jadeleen just got in
front and held her second match ball and this time her nerve
to win it 12-10.
Israr Ahmed and Asim Khan played a very long and
brutal 5 set match that went the full distance to 11-9 in
the fifth with Israr winning. In fact that seemed to be the
story of the day with a lot of matches going the distance
not only in the finals but also in the playoff matches that
were taking place around the venue.
Around the venue saw some high quality matches and it was
pretty much impossible to see the finals due to the demand
of the spectators cramming into the seating area. Also
present yesterday and today were Astroarena the local TV
crew to broadcast the matches on Malaysian TV later in the
month.
Ahmed Fareed and Vanessa Raj claimed the under
17 titles both coming through in four games.
Ali Bukhari and Megan Craig claimed the under
19 titles and with that a good amount of prize money and
they will be looking to do the double next week in Penang.
Tomorrow is a travelling day to Penang to begin the second
competition at 9am Tuesday morning.

Semi-Finals in KL
Andrew Cross reports
Another
high quality day’s squash in Malaysia today produced some
mixed results for the locals as they remain in the hunt for
6 Milo All Star titles.
The Girls under 11 semi finals produced two very even
contests, one match finishing 11-9 in the fifth and the
other 12-10 in the fifth, Aifa Azman and Siu Ting Chan
progressing to the finals where I’m sure tomorrow it will be
tight again.
On the boys side things were a lot more comfortable with
Hammas Ahmed Tarar progressing in three and Veer Chotrani
progressing in 4 games.
Girls under 13 final will be between two Malaysian players
Andrea Lee who played well to beat Zoe Foo 3-1 and
Sivasangari beat Japanese playing Satomi Watanabe also 3-1.
Andrea and Sivasangari have already played twice this year
with Sivasangari having won both matches. Tomorrow will be
different with the Milo meaning so much to both girls.
Mohd Farez Izwan will look to add to the boys under 11 title
he won two years ago when he takes on Kwok Kee Chu in
tomorrow morning's final.
In the boys under 15 category both ties went the way of the
Pakistan players, first on was Syafiq Kamel and Israr Ahmed.
The first three games were very tight all going the distance
to a tie break. In the fourth Syafiq seemed to lose his
intensity and within a couple of minutes Israr was 6 points
clear something Syafiq would never regain.
The second semi final between Ng Eain Yow and Asim Khan
was
a good match, Both players started evenly but from 7-7 Khans
greater reach gave him the advantage. If you see these boys
you will understand that Khan was about 2 feet taller than
Yow. Khan got to 8-0 in the second before Yow managed to
score a point and although he got few more it was difficult
to get back on level terms. In the third however Yow came
back and led 5-1 but the work put into gaining that lead
caught up with him and soon he found himself down and out
11-5.
Jadeleen Lee and Aika Azman was a closely contested affair
with Aika winning the first but Jadeleen has a slight
experience advantage and went on to win the next two.
Jadeleen was now looking comfortable, leading 7-2 in the
fourth and heading for a 3-1 victory when there was some
movement in the crowd. It was the arrival of the Iran barmy
army and they were there to support Aika, from 7-2 down she
was leading 10-7 and it seemed we were heading for a fifth
but Jadeleen steadied herself just in time to regain
composure and close it out in the fourth 15/13. Her opponent
in the final will be Eleanor Epke of New Zealand who beat
Nazihah Hanis of Malaysia 3-0.
Boys under 19 semi finals were of high quality with Ali Bukhari and
Affeeq Abedeen winning through to the finals.
Bukhari had to be at his best to beat Sanjay Singh Chal who
played really well, probably some of the better squash that
I have seen him produce.
The second semi was again closely contested with Affeeq
needing all five games to overcome a tough challenge from Ho
Tze Ho of Hong Kong.
Tomorrow will see some very close and exciting matches as
the players prepare themselves for one last push.

Late night
Quarters in KL
Andrew Cross reports
A
late night in KL provided us with some brilliant attacking
squash.
First quarter final of the day was between Syafiq Kamel
and Darren Chan both of Malaysia and we were served with
a real treat of attacking squash. Darren dominated the first
two games with his fantastic shots to the front of the court
anything that was a couple of inches off the wall would
finish rolling out of the nick.
Syafiq who also likes to play the same game was struggling
to deal with Darren’s attacking play and it was in the
middle of the third game where things just began to turn in
Syafiq's favour when Darren's shots just started to clip the
tin. From this point Syafiq was always just ahead and he
never looked back going on to win in 5 games.
Ng Eain Yow the British Junior Open Champion under 13
played his best squash of the week so far to see off Hong
Kong player To Yu Ling and will be looking to make the final
but he will face a stern test today from Asim Khan of
Pakistan who from what I have seen so far reads the game
well and covers the court with ease.
Boys under 15s is Malaysia vs Pakistan in the semis.
Jadeleen Lee, Aika Azman and Nazihah Hanis made it three
Malaysians in the semis of the Girls Under 15 and they were
joined by Eleanor Epke of New Zealand.
Home hopes were ended in the boys under 17 event when
Kush Kumar ended Amir Farhan’s run in a tight four
games. It was nicely poised at 1 game all and 10 all when
there was a mammoth rally which Farhan won and things looked
to have swung in his favour on the next point he served out
to hand the advantage back to Kush and from there he won the
next two points easily.
The fourth was tight all the way but Kush just had the
advantage and slightly more experience on how to win the
bigger points.
Top seed Al Saraj ended the run of giant killing
Soheil Shomelli in 4 close games.
Tan Yan Xin from Malaysia and Tsz Wing Tong of
Hong Kong for me played the final in the quarter finals with
the Malaysian removing the top seed from the event.
Boys under 19 was what provided us with the late night
drama. Ali Bukhari progressed to the semis quite
comfortably as did Affeeq Abedeen, but the other two
matches were closely contested. Marcus Yuen who knocked out
the second seed Addeen Idrakie could not quite repeat his
performance and he hit a lot of tins to give the match to
Ho Tze Ho.
Sanjay Singh and Yip Tsz Fung who have a history of
playing each other in this event and others in Malaysia
produced some very strange squash. Yip made his intentions
clear from the start that he was here to attack and the
first point where he served from the forehand Sanjay
returned cross court deep to the back and Yip hit a low
straight kill to the front that rolled out of the nick.
The whole match continued along these lines the first game
almost everything Yip hit came off winning 11-6, the second
he was off form and Sanjay took control. In the third Sanjay
lost his length which gave the advantage back to Yip and Yip
punished him with some blistering shots 11-3. In the fourth
Yip was back to hitting the tin and Sanjay won the game
11-3.
Now the 5th game and I was sat wondering which Yip I was
going to see and for the first part of the game Yip hit a
lot of tins until Sanjay got to 10-5 match ball from then
Sanjay changed his game and started to look for one amazing
shot to finish off the match which is not what he needed to
do. From there he lost his length and passed the advantage
back to Yip.
Five match balls wasted and we were at 10-10 a loose ball in
the middle of the court from Yip, cross court nick from
Sanjay. In the next rally a tight ball from Yip and we were
back at 11-11. Again another loose ball in the middle and
Sanjay hit the nick, its now 12-11 and its match ball number
7, a long rally and Yip hits a straight drive back onto
himself, game and match to Sanjay.
Now we are in the business end of the competition time to
see what’s left in the legs, the body and more importantly
the mind.

Day Three
in KL
Andrew Cross reports
Today
is the third day of the Milo Junior Open 2011 and is the
round of last 16. It kick starts what is a very busy month
for Asian Squash with the Milo 31st May to 5 June followed
by the Penang Junior Open 7th to 11th and the climax
of the three will be the Asian Junior Championships
in Amman Jordan 21st to 25th.
The Milo has yet again attracted some of the best players in
Asia and Oceania to come and compete for some of the best
prize money is junior squash. There are 514 players from 16
different countries competing in 5 age groups starting from
under 11 all the way to under 19.
The home country will be looking for success in as many age
groups as possible but there will be some extremely testing
matches along the way.
As we get into the business end of the competition I'm sure
there will be a lot of entertaining squash.
On a final note well done to the team that completed the
coast to coast challenge a brilliant cause and I'm sure you
will all be feeling the effects today but will be very happy
with what you achieved.
