Darren in
hunt for maiden title
From the New Straits Times
Darren Subramaniam strolled to a comfortable second
round win in his bid to bag the boys' Under-15 title for the
first time at the Milo All-Stars Junior Championships in
Petaling Jaya yesterday.
The top-seeded Darren barely broke sweat in beating Akid
Azman of Kedah 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 after receiving a
first-round bye.
Darren, who won at the Qatar International Junior
Championship for his sole international title this year, is
bent on adding the Under-15 event to the Under-13 crown he
won in 2007.
The Selangor player, who also won the Under-19 title at the
SportExcel National Junior Circuit second leg in Johor Baru
on March 30, declined the opportunity to compete in a higher
age-group to focus on extending his winning run.
"I've
not won the Under-15 title yet as I only finished third last
year. I want to win this title first before moving up the
age-groups as I've only got one Under-13 title to show in
the Milo All-Stars," said Darren at the Astaka Courts
yesterday.
Darren recently shifted his training base to the National
Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil where he has the benefit of
sparring with national elite and back-up players under the
watchful eyes of national coaches.
He believes the move has done wonders for his game and the
Qatar win is proof of his improving performances.
"I think I've improved a lot since starting training there
three months ago. My rallying has improved which allows me
to last the distance better so I'm confident I'd be able to
win this title here," said Darren.
Selangor's Leong Elroy, the second seed in the boys'
Under-17 event, also advanced to the third round after
beating Andre Maklaskevsky 11-2, 11-5, 11-4 on a day when
most of the top players were idle after receiving
first-round byes.
Girls' Under-19 defending champion Low Wee Wern does
not swing into action until tomorrow when she plays either
Kang Sin Hye of South Korea or Australia's Rheanne Margaret
Niebling in the second round.
Wee Wern is likely to meet fellow national junior and Penang
teammate Nessrine Ariffin in the quarter-finals before a
probable semi-final clash with Australian joint-third seed
Tamika Saxby.

Wee Wern targets one
more Milo
From the New Straits Times
British Junior Open champion Low Wee Wern is the main
attraction at the 2009 Milo All-Stars Junior Squash
Championships as she attempts to win her fourth straight
Under-19 title starting today at the Astaka Courts in
Petaling Jaya.
But more than that, the reigning Asian junior champion will
be looking to end her junior playing days on a high as the
Milo All-Stars is Wee Wern's penultimate junior tournament
before the Penang Junior Open the following week.
"These two tournaments are my last as a junior and I hope to
win them both. After that I've got the Malaysian Open and
Singapore Masters to play before going off to Amsterdam for
a four-month training stint (with World No 1 Nicol David),"
said Wee Wern yesterday.
Aside from the Under-19 titles from 2006 to 2008, Wee Wern
also won the Under-17 and Under-15 events in 2005 and 2004
respectively.
Top seed Wee Wern's main challenger is expected to be second
seed Liu Tsz Ling of Hong Kong, who, however, must overcome
Wee Wern's third-seeded sister Wee Nee, last year's Under-17
winner, in the semi-finals first.
In the absence of last year boys' Under-19 champion Ivan
Yuen, who is currently on a training attachment in Egypt,
India's Ravi Dixit has been installed as the top seed.
Second seed Ng Jo Wen of Selangor is expected to provide
stiff opposition as he alone flies the flag for the locals
in an event where he is the only Malaysian's seeded among
the top eight.
Selangor also have eyes on the boys' Under-17 and Under-15
titles through Leong Elroy and Darren Subramaniam
and the
girls' Under-17 event where Tan Yan Xin is the overwhelming
favourite.
The hosts will also look to dominate the girls' Under-11
category where Zoe Foo is the top seed while the Under-13
final is projected to be an all-Selangor final between Jadeleen Lee and
T. Mithila.
Kelantan's Shafiq Kamal is the top seed in the boys'
Under-13 event while Sabah's Fareez Izwan Mukhtar is the
favourite in the Under-11 category.
About 540 players from 14 countries, including Australia,
Hong Kong, India, Japan, Pakistan, Singapore and South
Korea, will be contesting 10 age-group categories.
