Millicent Open 2011
10-12 June, South Australia
Francis wins second title
as Corren wins his 35th

Andrew Dent reports

Melbourne’s Melody Francis claimed her second title on the women’s professional squash tour when she beat Tesni Evans of Wales 13-11, 11-7, 11-7 to take out the Millicent Open in South Australia on Sunday.

Francis added the Millicent crown to the Australia Day Challenge trophy she won in Brisbane in January with her straight games win over the 18-year-old Evans.

In the men’s final, Millicent born and raised Mike Corren won his 35th title on the world tour in his 50th final when he beat Victoria’s Rex Hedrick 11-7, 11-8, 11-5.

Francis, 22, was the third seed in Millicent but downed top seeded New Zealander Kylie Lindsay in Saturday’s semi-finals to reach the decider.

She took control in the final after winning the first game in a tiebreaker, not allowing Evans, who pushed her to five games in last month’s City of Perth International, back into the match.

“I’m really happy with how I played this week,” Francis said. “I’ve been working on a few things over the past couple of months and I feel like the puzzle pieces are coming together.

“Beating Kylie Lindsay gave me a great confidence boost – it was a lot easier today than the last time I played Tesni in Perth.”

Francis said one of her goals at the start of the year was to win tournaments on this year’s Australian Squash Tour. “Last year I was making a lot of semi-finals and finals but I never got to break through,” she said.

“There are so many tournaments this year that there are a lot of opportunities, so I am trying to win as many as I can.”

Francis, who is studying international relations at Deakin University, now heads to Adelaide for the South Australian Open, beginning on Thursday.

“It’s mostly the same girls playing next week so I am definitely in with a chance – I want to keep my momentum going.”

Corren will also play in the South Australian Open before taking an extended break from the tour after deciding to move to New Zealand for financial reasons.

He said winning his home town tournament for the second year in succession made withdrawing from the remainder of the Australian Squash Tour easier.

“I could not win another tournament for the rest of the year and not give a toss after winning this one,” he said. “I will still give it my all in Adelaide, but I’m actually looking forward to a bit of a break.”

Corren said winning in Millicent had made up for his semi-final loss at last week’s Golden Open, in Kalgoorlie when he had played on despite suffering from food poisoning.

“I was quite confident I could bounce back, I had some close games but I felt pretty well in control all week,” he said.

Francis to take on surprise packet Evans in final

Melbourne’s Melody Francis will take on surprise packet Tesni Evans of Wales in the final of the Millicent Open squash tournament in South Australia after both disposed of higher ranked opponents on Saturday.

Francis downed top seeded New Zealander Kylie Lindsay 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 to reach the sixth final of her career while 18-year-old Evans beat two seeded players in a row to make her first ever final on the women’s tour.

Evans downed second seed Siti Munirah Jusoh 10-12, 11-2, 11-3, 9-11, 11-3 in the quarters before disposing of seventh ranked Kiwi Amanda Landers-Murphy 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 11-8 in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile defending champion Mike Corren remained on track to make his 50th final on the men’s PSA tour when he beat Melbourne’s Josh Cardwell 12-10, 11-7, 11-3 in the quarter-finals.

He next takes on Malaysia’s Elvinn Keo, who ended the run of young Indian Mahesh Mangaonkar 14-12, 2-11, 12-10, 14-12.

The second semi-final will be between second seeded Victorian Rex Hedrick and Austria’s Aqeel Rehman.
