Piedro Schweertman went one better than last year during the
MeerSquashHeroes Open 2010, claiming his first tournament win on the
PSA World Tour with an impressive performance against youngster
Robert Downer in the final.
The 26-year old Dutchman dominated play from the outset against the
English qualifier who played his maiden PSA tournament in the Dutch
city of Hoofddorp. The tournament favourite, ranked 111th in the
world, kept the pace high throughout the first two games, outplaying
his young opponent on numerous occasions. The talented Downer, just
17 years of age, fought back however to take the third with a spell
of brilliant shots, before Schweertman regained control again,
winning 11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 11-4 in a 33-minute match.
The win marks Schweertman’ maiden PSA Tour title in only his second
ever final and will put him close to the top-100 on next month’s
ranking.
17-year
old Robert Downer made the final of the MeerSquashHeroes Open
2010 in his first tournament on the PSA World Tour after surviving a
heroic match against compatriot Mark Fuller in today’s semi finals.
Both qualifiers played a fantastic match, but ultimately it was the
English junior who prevailed, fighting off a match ball in the
process to register an impressive five games victory over his more
experienced opponent.
The second semi final also provided plenty of fireworks. Tournament
favourite Piedro Schweertman, last year’s runner-up, had to
overcome a first game loss to beat compatriot Rene Mijs in five hard
fought games to reach his second PSA final.
