26-Aug, Final:
Rodriguez takes 19th title in Medellin
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
In
front of a packed crowd in Medellin, the Colombian Miguel Angel
Rodriguez claimed his 15th professional title but his first in
Medellin after defeating Egyptian Andrew Wagih a dramatic final.
It was a vibrant match from beginning to end. The match had constant
deep lengths and cross courts near the tin, in order to measure the
rival and accompanied with great physical endurance, strategic
proposition and a succession of winning shots from side to
side, precision and rhythm that was intercalated with unforced
errors.
Speed,
movement and attacking shots of high difficulty. The Egyptian always
faithful to his style attacked constantly yet covered every part of
the court; it seemed small due to his incredible coverage of the
court, yet Rodriguez compensated this with his speed, precision and
rhythm.
The first game had a long tie break after an apparent advantage of
the Colombia. Wagih applied successive attacks and tied. Yet the
Colombian was more patient to resolve the game.
The
second game was more strategic and aggressive in attack. The
Colombian anticipated the rallies and became unreachable.
The third game was a great fantasy, with plays that wowed the crowd.
Andrew tried to reverse the tendency, yet Miguel Angel was
concentrated and precise and assured this title No.19.
Great match.

25-Aug, Semis:
Rodriguez to meet Wagih in Medellin Final
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
After a very emotive and unfortunate retirement of the Welshman
Peter Creed, the Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 26, and
the Egyptian Andrew Wagih, 21, reached this Saturday
afternoon the final of the Medellin Squash Open 2012, that is being
held in the Club Campestre.
Andrew Wagih (EGY) 3-1 Henrik Mustonen (FIN)
7-11,11-4,11-8,11-9 (50m)
The
young Egyptian had to fight against a glycogen drop in his quarter
finals match, yet surprised the Finnish Mustonen in an emotive
semifinal of four games.
Mustonen played outside his comfort zone, and attacked the ball
consistently, proposed a variety of shots and risk to win.
He even assimilated and Egyptian style game. Wagih attacked in every
rally that end shortly due to the unforced errors or the impressive
kill shots that fascinate the crowd.
Mustonen won the first game, he pressured with deep lengths and
rhythm changes while Wagih was erratic.
Afterwards everything changed, Wagih became more precise in his
attack, Mustonens shots didn’t seem to pass the mid court while the
Egyptians shots became generous and proliferous, winning 3
consecutive games to the final.
Miguel Angel Rodríguez (COL) 3-0 Peter Creed (WAL)
6/1 rtd.
The Welsh player Creed, presented himself in the semifinal with
respect to the organization, the public and his rival, yet a
resentment he suffered yesterday didn't allow him to play to his
full potential after he forced himself in a rally.
He tried, but he preferred to withdraw the match to avoid a stronger
injury. He is a great player and gentlemen. Rodriguez reached his
third PSA final in Colombia, 20 finals in his professional career
and an outstanding player for the continent.
"Hamstring strain!" tweeted Creed. "Need to try and get ready for Bogota
and Cartagena.

24-Aug, Quarters:
Seeds through to Medellin semis
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

Andrew Wagih (EGY) - Jaymie Haycocks (ENG)
6-11,11-5,11-7,9-11,11-3 (62m)
With
a surprise match filled with constant attack as well as unforced
errors in the search of accuracy, the Egyptian could fight against
the strategy proposed by the British Haycocks.
The Egyptian style is based on permanent attack, malice and seems to
mark its way against the traditional British style, from which
Haycocks is a clear representative.
Wagih, 21, started playing with anxiety but with time he became more
precise in his winning shots and in three games he advanced to the
semi finals.
Peter Creed (WAL) - Dane Sharp (CAN)
13-11,6-11,11-8,11-7 (51m)
With
a stylish game yet combined with rhythm changes and the ability to
hit the ball until the last moment, the Welsh Creed made an example
of an excellent deep and consistent squash. Sharp became repetitive
and was forced to error.
Even though he managed to disturb his opponent, he couldn’t close
the point in the definitive instants of each game. Creed played with
great solvency, he was a great surprise in the Medellin Open.

Henrik Mustonen (FIN) - Gonzalo Miranda (ARG)
11-7,11-8,11-8 (31m)
Mustonen
played solidly against the Argentineans speed that nonetheless was
over passed by the Finnish’s strength.
Mustonen found the right moments to attack, add winning points and
become stronger in the back of the court. Great physical strength.
Miguel Angel Rodríguez (COL) Hernan D'Arcangelo (ARG)
11-3,11-6,11-9 (30m)
After
overcoming the match played yesterday against the Mexican Avila, the
Colombian played more relaxed and calm with less uneasiness and more
precision.
The veteran Argentinean player from Cordoba played to the back, yet
he lacked the precision to attack and impose his rhythm to threaten
the supremacy of the Colombian that played with confidence.

23-Aug, Round One:
Seeds through to Medellin quarters
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

Peter Creed (WAL) bt Erik Tepos (MEX)
11-7,9-11,12-10,11-4 (82m)
Creed and Tepoz played a technical and prolonged match. Creed
started playing more focused and took the advantage of the first
game, yet in the end of the second he had 3 unforced errors that led
to parity. In spite of this, the Welsh played with precision, and
won the tie break in the third game. He knew when to attack and won
the match.
Andrew Wagih Shoukry (EGY)bt Javier Castilla (COL)
12-10,11-8,11-9 (38m)
The
21 years old Egyptian Wagih managed to neutralize the experienced
Colombian Castilla, 31, with an excellent attack game that
characterizes his country’s game style.
In the first game the Colombian started playing more precise, but
Wagih adapted to the game, attacked with his height and agility
showing a solid squash. It was a good presentation from Castilla.
Dane Sharp (CAN) bt Daniel Rios (COL)
11-2, 11-2,11-3 (23m).
With a more consistent game that awaits the opponent’s errors, and
gains trust with the constant pressure of boasts, the 27 years old
Canadian won against the Colombian local. Rios aged 24 arrived to
the main draw from the qualy, but couldn’t generate a winning
strategy against Sharp. The player from Toronto won in 3 games.
Jaymie Haycocks (ENG) - Johan Bouquet (FRA)
11-9,4-11,11-9,11-2
(48m)
The
two Europeans played a deep game with long rallies in which unforced
errors marked the difference.
Haycocks aged 29 was more patient in the beginning, yet he lost the
second game but won the following games taking advantage of the
physical wear out of his opponent.
His opponent couldn’t resist the pressure from Haycocks attack that
was more consistent and patient, and he won with surprise drops.
Hernan D'Arcangelo (ARG) - Fernando Lopez (MEX)
11-8,
11-7,11-6 (31m)
Taking advantage of his height 1.88, the Argentinean knew how to
cover the court and take the lead of a game that seemed tied. With
32 the Argentinean veteran Darcangelo knew how to add up with
patience and concentration the game needed to win in 3 successive
games and pass to the second round in Medellin against the Mexican
López.

Gonzalo Miranda (ARG) - Anderson Cardona (COL)
12-10,
6-11,6-11,11-3, 11-5 (62m)
A foreigner to the surroundings the Argentinean Miranda,21, was lost
against the strenght of the Colombian Cardona aged 24. Cardona
gained advantage and was precise with his drop shots and frustrated
Miranda. Nonetheless Miranda tied the match to 2 with his velocity
and mental strenght winning the match. It was a good performance
from the Colombian
Henrik Mustonen (FIN) - Gerardo de Paul (MEX)
11-4,11-3, 11-8
(23m)
The
Finnish Mustonen,No 2 seed of the tournament showed his physical
strenght, game pressure and consistency.
Today he showed he is a clear contender to reach the final. De Paul
player with effort but couldnt pressure the European.
Miguel Angel Rodríguez (COL) - Alfredo Avila (MEX)
11-8,15-13,12-10 (65m)
With great pressure of deep lengths near the out line the Colombian
Rodríguez imposed his authority against the Mexican Ávila that
proved to be the most solid player of all the Mexican group. The
combination of strength and power allowed the Colombian from Bogotá,
26, to prove his best squash moment. Ávila showed speed and
resistance.
Great presentation. The best game of the night.
