03-Apr, Quarters
Quarters in Castellon
Carlos Cornes Ribidas reports

The fourth day of tournament in Castellon was very funny for the people came to Periesport Club. The players showed their best squash and the results reveal it.

Joe Lee advanced in draw with a game sure and funny. Lyall finished his first psa tournament, he played 10 games in the qualy, and in main draw played against Jakob Dirnberger and won in 4 games and against Lee he added up 3 games more. Finally tomorrow Patterson will go back home with 17 gamesunder his belt.

Neil Hitchens finished Spanish hopes by beating local star Diego Lopez. There were a lot of people on court number 1 of Periesport Club but people couldn’t see the Diego´s victory .

Neil won his match in three hard games, during the 46 minutes of the match he show better squash and was very concentrated. On the other hand, Diego also played good squash showing good shots and playing with a lot of consistency. This is the personal impression of Diego Lopez, local star:

“Yesterday I played good against Stefan but the match was too long, then today Neil was a better player in front me and I wanted play my balls perfectly to the back of the court”

“I am improving my basic game and I hope to climb in the rankings soon.”

In the other match of the day, Danish Kristian Frost played against Englishman, James Snell who won in five spectacular games.

“WOW, It was a good game close all the way," said Kristian. "In the end I really thought I had it, Leading 10/7 in the fifth – so annoying!!!

"Well, that’s squash, thanks to the organizer. It has been a good tournament!!!!.
The Danish player goes back to Paris after showing the best squash that Castellon people can remember.

On the other side was James Snell who played concentrated at the end and won maybe miraculously.

“”ery Lucky to win, 10-7 down in thth. I didn't feel comfortable on court today, never relaxed. Thought he played well, whoever had the better length was winning the points. Thankfully I had some luck and managed to scrape a win!!”

Finally Alan Clyne, the Scottish number one, beat Rory Pennell. The Scottish player played with good rhythm, and the spectators enjoyed the games of both players.

At the end of the match Rory said: “I played reasonably well this evening. I just wasn’t quite fresh enough to try and keep up with Alan’s ridiculously fast pace.”

And Alan said: ”I managed to put in a few hard rallies at the start of the match, after that I fell quite comfortable. He was dangerous if I gave him anything loose so I tried to move him to all four corners.”

01-Apr, Qualifying Finals:
Qualifying complete in Castellon
Carlos Cornes Ribidas reports

The second day of the qualifying is over, good crowds, good squash and good players …

The afternoon started with a 5 pm match between seed number 1 Stuart Crawford and the young Spaniard Marc Soriano … good match for the Scot he played just 20 minutes of squash, with an easy win…

"It was a fairly easy match, he hit some good shots in the third, but, apart from that I felt in control. I don't mind who I get tomorrow, I've been playing well recently, so hopefully I can keep it going."

The second match gave us a good 60 minutes of squash, between Lyall Patterson and “speddy” Gonzalo Miranda. The Scot dominated the first two games, but tired in the third and the Argentinean came back from 9-7 with a couple of tough rallies, and took the third, and eventually the last two games went easy for the South American player…

"Bottled it … again!!! 2-0 and 9-7 up playing quite well and felt in control, then I got a bit excited and Gonzalo started playing much better. He's fast, and didn't seem to get tired at all, and in the fourth and fifth game I became a bit impatient and made too many errors. It's my first PSA event and I enjoyed the experience…it's been a GOOD TOURNAMENT!"

"The match started tough, he took the important points in the important moments, but after getting the third I felt perfect and in good shape, and I think that, that was the key of the game, he played a long match yesterday…. Very happy to get through… we'll see tomorrow…"

The following match was all-English, with a 3-0 win for Stephen Siveter over Andrew Birks, with a long first game of 20 minutes that finally went to Stephen, and the match was over then .. it's going to be tough to beat Stephen in this tournament, he is quit fit and has a lot of experience.

"The match started out quite hard, and I was able top lay steady squash to scrape the first game 12-10. The following games where easier as my opponent made more mistakes, which took the pressure off me. I was pleased to win 3-0, and make it through to the main draw."

Last match of the evening was at 8 pm…with a win for the Englishman Rory Pennell over the Spaniard Eduardo Gonzalez. The Spanish dropped a lot of energy in the first game but finally didn't manage to take the game, while the next two with an efficient game went for the English…

"He started at a very high pace, I just managed to keep in front of him all the time. I was able to ply my game, I took a Spanish siesta and felt revitalised and raring to go ... we'll see tomorrow ..."

"I started ok, good shots, playing my game but not deep enough, and he was able to take the T, and I wasn't able to come back… a bit disappointed with my game and with my mind ..."
