Jersey Squash Classic 2013
10-13 May, Jersey, Channel Islands, $10k |
Jersey to host PSA event
Jersey is proud to be hosting a PSA world tour event in May 2013.
The Jersey Squash Classic will be a PSA Challenger 5 or Challenger
10 ($5,000 or $10,000) depending on sponsorship raised and will
feature players from within the world’s top 100.
The event will run from the 10th – 13th May 2013 at the Jersey
Squash & Racketball Club (JSRC) and will feature a 16 main draw and
16 qualifying draw over 4 days.
The qualifying draw will feature local Jersey Island players
including a Junior Academy player. The event will include a main
draw wildcard entry who will be announced nearer the time.
As part of the legacy of the event, professional players will be
contracted to give back time to the Jersey Squash Development
Schools Programme. Local schools including Samares, St Luke’s and
Plat Douet will be invited to the club to watch the players play and
train, to have autographs signed and have the opportunity to ask the
players questions.
The legacy aspect of the event is considered a key component and we
are hoping this will inspire them to take up the sport.
The event will be run under the Jersey Squash & Racketball
Association (JSRA) umbrella, the governing body for squash and
racketball in Jersey. Nick Taylor, the Director of Jersey Squash
will be event promoter and tournament director. Nick’s events team
are very excited about holding the first PSA professional squash
tour event here in Jersey.
Nick said:
“It’s
always been my ambition to hold a PSA event in Jersey and now we
have a new exciting facility and structure for the sport there is no
better time.
"The JSRA and JSRC with the help of Bedell and the States of Jersey
have introduced squash to over 10,000 youngsters in Jersey and I now
feel it is important to bring events like this to the island.
This event will inspire our Bedell Jersey Junior Squash Academy
players and we will even have an academy player playing in the event
which will help with the legacy and future of the event. It will
also give our elite players the chance to compete against world
ranked players which will help them in their Island Games and
Commonwealth Games aspirations.
There is a large squash following and a fantastic sprit and ethos,
not just at the club, but across all island squash facilities and
there will be many people who will be eager to see some of the best
players in the world compete here.” |
