Jena Super Satellite 2009
20-22 Mar, Kuwait, $6k

22-Mar, Final:
Abdullah Al Mezayen (Kuw) bt Danish Atlas Khan (Pak)  3/0

21-Mar, Round One & Quarters:
Seeds suffer in Kuwait

Three seeds fell in the first round of the Jena Super Satellite in Kuwait, with Stuart Crawford, Danish Atlas Khan and local qualifier A. Ashkanani upsetting the odds.

Crawford took on Jonas Laursen, the eighth seed from Denmark.
The match never really good started before it was over, way to many
mistakes from Jonas and some great cross court nicks from Stuart made it tough for the Dane to get into the match as the Scot made easy progress into the quarters.

"I never really got started, I felt really good yesterday when I was having a hit with Jens, but today it didn't really work out for me AT ALL.

"Now I'm just going to put this match behind me and go home training some more and maybe a bit harder, but all and all non of us can really complain to much about loosing, I think we are all very lucky to have the chance to see so many different parts of the world while being with some of our best friend at the same time, at least that's what I think."

Top seed Jens Schoor had a tough match against qualifier N. Al-Ramzi. The German  started out a bit slow getting down 6-0, in the first game eventually getting started with some great volley drops and took the first game 11-9. Al-Ramzi was flying in the second and took it without much of a problem. From the third game and till the end of the match Jens was very focused and won 3/1 after almost an hour's play.

Quarter-Finals

In the quarter-finals second seed John Rooney started his match with Ahhmed Hawas by putting a lot of pressure on the young Egyptian, taking the first game easily. Game two saw some amazing shots from Hawas, winner after winner, hitting crosscourt nicks on maybe eight occasions to level the match at 1-1.

The Irishman took control in the third and fourth games though, putting  a lot of hard pressure on his opponent and eventually winning the match 3-1.

"I really enjoyed the match. In the second game he hit soooo many nicks..... happy to win and looking forward to tomorrow."

Danis Atlas won the battle of the morning giant-killers, beating Crawford in four games to set up a semi-final clash with Rooney.

The day's final upset came as quarter-finals as top seed Schoor fell in five games to South Africa's Gary Wheadon in a five game marathon. Wheadon faces local favourite Abdullah Al Mezayen for a place in the final.

"My match against Gary started off on the four wall glass court, but after a few rallies we both decided to play on on a different court, because the floor was too slippery. We both went to the floor about three times each in the first five rallies.

"So after we changed the court it was to become a really competitive match. I took the first, he fought back in the second, he took the third, I took the fourth quite comfortably, because he was making a lot of mistakes.

"The fifth and deciding game was the one to become the hardest of all. After almost 70min playing we ended up at 7-all in the fifth. I could win the next two rallies with a lot work. Another tough rally to was played and I got cramps in my right calf and my left upper leg and my right arm as well. This was the chance he was waiting for and I could do nothing against it, because I couldn't even walk anymore!

"The reason for these cramps is most probably the reason that these matches today were my first matches for the last two and a half weeks. I couldn't play because I was injured during that time. Actually therefore I was quite happy with my performance before I got the cramps…"
