Jarvis & Kaplan Wrap
Liz Addison reports

If one could find a way to bottle the “Jarvis/Kaplan spirit” and sell it to other one could become rich. It always fascinates how teams play inspired squash and lift their performances with their team’s support enveloping them.

Western Province women’s A team, which had dropped two matches against Northerns A the previous day ,started off in different fashion against defending champions Central Gauteng . Sacha West playing hesitantly in the first game against Kathryn Blake, but winning it 16-14 got stronger and stronger, taking the next two 11-9 11-1 to give Western Province their first match.

Next match on was Milnay Louw, who represented South Africa in the 2010 Women’s World Team Championships in new Zealand, and talented left hander Diana Argyle who had represented South Africa in 2008. Louw dropped the first game, but team support saw her out manoeuvre Argyle and pocket the next 3 to give Western Province their second match.

The clash between Emma Beddoes ranked 25 in the world, and Tenille van der Merwe, the national number 1 and ranked 35 in the world, fizzled to a comfortable 3-1 victory for van der Merwe. Beddoes took the first game at 11-2 but thereafter van der Merwe gained control pocketing the next 3 at 11-8 11-8 11-8 to give Western Province the Kaplan Trophy.

Alexandra Fuller, who had suffered a surprise 0-3 defeat, at the hands of Northerns’ Robyn Baptiste also dropped the first game to Nicola Helwick, but gained in confidence and won the next 3 . Province’s captain Karen Blom (the other person to lose a match against Northerns) played hard attacking squash to account for Adel Weir Nunan in straight game and complete Province’s 5-0 win.

The playing order for the first 4 days was 3,4,5,2,1 – the draw for the final day was drawn for all sections resulting in 4,2,1,5,3.

Starting at 11h30 Gary Wheadon (Kzn) and Rudi Willemse (WP) took to the court. Wheadon, who has battled to find form this year, drew first blood for the defending champions. Willemse took the first game 12-10 but Wheadon just turned up the heat and won the next 3 games 11-9 11-2 11-4. Playing in his second Jarvis, Hungarian Mark Krasjcak, had the measure of Western Province’s captain, Rodney Durbach, only needing 3 games to win through 11-6 11-7 11-6.

In an entertaining tussle Steve Coppinger clinched the title for Kwazulu Natal when he took 5 games to beat Shaun Le Roux. UCT University student notched Western Province’s only win when he defeated Andrew Martin in 4 games. In a case of déjà vu , the final encounter saw Kwazulu Natal’s captain, Adrian Hansen, up against Zuko Kubukeli. 2010 – Hansen clawed to victory but despite being the third Kwazulu Natalian to lose the first game 10-12 against their Western Province’s opponent, he was in complete control in the end 3 winning 11-7 11-4 11-2 to give Kwazulu Natal an 18-7 win.

With the scoring a point per game and 5 bonus points Kwazulu Natal had delivered an awesome performance during the week winning 20-1 20-3 20-0and 20-7.

Border delivered their best ever performance defeating Central Gauteng 15-8 although finishing 4th on 63 points 2 points behind their opponents. Thoboki Mohohlo started off in winning fashion outplaying Jason Le Roux but Tim Garner disposed of Mike Tootill in straight games to level the matches at 1 all .

Eddie Charlton took a second amtch for the Gautengerss when he beat Clinton Leeuw in straight games. Clinton Broedelet, who had not had a succesful week, surprised perhaps himself and his team, when after trailing by two games to one he took the fourth and fifth games 11-9 11-9 against the higher ranked Paul Atkinson. This left Kelvin Edwards the pleasure of ousting Devon Hendrikse, ranked 11, 11-6 11-6 11-6 to give hosts Border a welcome victory.
In the third match in the A section Easterns captained by Craig van der wath had little trouble in outplaying Central Gauteng second string 20-3.

Northerns B who had been demoted to the Men’s B section after finishing last in the A section in 2010 defeated Western Province B to regain promotion while SACD A who had 3 players in the top 20 in their side were ecstatic at oustring free Satte A to gin promotion to the B section for 2012. Border B beat Border C to win the men’s D section.

SACD completed a highly successful week when the women’s side led by the 2010 World Deaf champion, Christine Ferreira won the women’s B section defeating Western Province B .

Despite the hiccough on the Friday 8th when Jane’s car was stolen and the power cut on the Thursday 14th - the weather , the venues, the accommodation, the functions , the camaraderie , the atmosphere, the all contributed to one really happy squash family from around the country who have returned home with happy memories of a most enjoyable week.

Day Four, Thursday:
Liz Addison reports

Beautiful weather but Murphy decided things were running too smoothly so off went the electricity in a number of East London’s suburbs including the clubs at Cambridge, Hamiltons and Old Selbornians. Fortunately Beacon Bay and Gonubie were on another circuit so the teams involved in the morning’s fixtures, which were interrupted were sent to Beacon Bay and the Men’s A section moved to Beacon Bay where the Women’s A section was already scheduled.

In the men’s A section ,Central Gauteng, which had caused the upset by outplaying second seeded Western Province in an epic 6 and a half hours, found themselves outplayed in all positions by Kwazulu Natal’s “shark attack”. (Their rugby side is the Sharks”). At number 5 Andrew Martin (Kzn) subdued Paul Atkinson in three: Gary Wheadon dropped a game against Thoboki Mohohlo while “iron man” Adrian Hansen cruised through against Devon Hendrickse also in 3. Mike Tootill(CG) pushed Mark Krajcsak to 12-10 but then faded, notching only 3 points in each of the next two games. Steve Coppinger now ranked 35 in the world, completed the 20-1 victory beating Eddie Charlton 11-3 11-4 22-8.

Western Province inflicted a similar 20-1 defeat on Easterns. Shaun Le Roux , Rodney Durbach, Zuko Kubukeli and Richard Colburn advanced through with straight game wins over Craig van der Wath, JP Brits, Emmanuel Musefwe and Wade Groenewald. Rudi Willemse dropped a game against Rudolf Coetser – Western Province trail by 7 points so Friday’s clash between Kwazulu Natal and Western Province looks likely to be a cliffhanger.

Border A were also not under any pressure as they dropped only 3 points against Central Gauteng B and sit fourth on the log.

In the women’s A section Central Gauteng, the defending champions and Western Province defeated Eastern Province and Northerns respectively.

Central Gauteng’s 19-5 score does not reflect two of the battles that took place. Alison Oshry notched a win for Eastern Province when she beat Sharon Le Roux 12-10 in the fifth while Adel Weir Nunan had to draw on all her experience to edge through against 17 year old Elani Landman.

Nunan took the first 2 games 11-7 14-12 . Nuggety play by the athletic Landman saw her back in the game as she proceded to take the next two games ,strangely also 11-7 14-12. The fifth game was another tussle which Nunan took 12-10. Diana Argyle and Emma Beddoes at 2 and 1 respectively were noyt extended in their clashes , both winning in straight games.

Western Province registered a 16-6 win over Northerns with the latter taking two of the matches. At number 5 Robyn Baptist continued on her winning way beating the national junior captain, Alexandra Fuller in 3 games. Cara Fourie (Northerns) delivered a sound performance in accounting for Karen Blom in 5 games. Tenille van der Merwe, Milnay Louw and Sacha West wrapped up the match for Western Province defeating Cheyna Tucker, Senade Haupt and Sonica Fritz .

Before Friday’s final clash Western Province sit on 56 points and Central Gauteng on 54.

Northerns A and Western Province B clash in the decider on Friday with only 3 points separating them while the decider in Section C between Free State A and SACD A will be a humdinger – they are only 1 point apart.

So the stage is set for an awesome finals day ...

A special aura

It is difficult to describe the “aura” of Jarvis/Kaplan.

The unbelievable team spirit and support engendered by players staying together 24/7 in one town : battling it out on the courts daily for a week : supporting one’s other provincial sides at their playing sessions – the different sections play at different venues and different times : socialising for the rest of the day and evening – brings about a camaraderie that has fascinated many people and also international visitors who have been part of the week.

To name a few Chris Dittmar, Joey Barrington, Liam Kenny, Johnny Williams, Laurens Anjema, Renan Lavigne, Tim Vale, Mark Krajscak, Tim Garner, Sarah Fitzgerald, Natalie Grainger (although her home country).

Players, managers and this year referees from around the country are gathered together for a week which will remain for a long time in one’s memory.

Day Three in East London
Liz Addison reports

With two days remaining the atmosphere and pressure at the various courts in East London is rising – as is the temperature fortunately – 21 degrees today.

In the men’s A section second seeded Western Province and third seeds Central Gauteng were involved in a titanic struggle lasting 6 and a half hours . Zuko Kubukeli drew first blood for Province beating Devon Hendrickse in four games. Two talented young players then took to the court – Rudi Willemse (WP) and Thoboki Mohohlo (CG)- Willemse started strongly winning the first game 11-4 but Mohohlo started lengthening the rallies, but Willemse still had enough control to win the second game 13-11 and it appeared as though Province may get a second match. Mohohlo had other ideas and waltzed through the third game 11-5. Points seesawed until 12-all with the Gautenger edging through 14-12 and gaining in confidence he reeled in Willemse and the match at 11-4 in the fifth to level the matches. Next on, the number 5’s Richard Colburn (WP) and Paul Atkinson (CG). (Colburn ‘s father Alan and his mother Lorraine (nee Holmes) both earned national squash colours two decades ago).

2011 has seen Atkinson, who has relocated from Johannesburg (CG) to Cape Town (WP) but retain his right to represent Gauteng, struggle to find form but his timing was perfect. Trailing by two games to one, he hung in to win the fourth and fifth games 12-10 12-10 to give the Gautengers a 2-1 lead. Two “masters” and the captains of the respective sides- national player Rodney Durbach aged 37 and Mike Tootill , former National player aged 43, both ranked in the top 12 followed on court. Another epic battle going to five ensued but it was a determined Durbach who captured the 4th and 5th games 11-4 11-2 as Tootill faded. 4 matches = 5 hours !!

2 matches each: 10 games to 9 in WP’s favour and 189 points to 167.
Shaun le Roux (WP) Eddie Charlton (CG): Charlton, rebounding from his loss to Craig van der Wath the previous day, took the first two games 12-10 11-3 only to see le Roux lift his game and pocket the games 11-1 11-8 : tension and crowd support mounted : Le Roux led 9-7: Charlton held match point at 10-9 : le Roux at 11-10: Charlton at 12-11 and then 13-12 : both players desperately retrieving and STROKE – to Charlton after 90 minutes of sweat and ....

In complete contrast the powerful Kwazulu Natal line-up lead by Steve Coppinger and Mark Krajcsak cruised through 20-0 15-0 games against Central Gauteng B.

With much vocal support the host team Border registered an 18-7 win over Easterns: Tim Garner disposing of JP Britz 11-6 11-8 11-1 and Clinton Leeuw subduing Craig van der wath in 4 games.

In Section B Northerns A – demoted last year after finishing 6th- lead with 59 points followed by Western Province on 58.

As seeded SACD A (59 points) and Free State A (56 points) are on a collision course in Section C with the next nearest team Western Province C on 40 points.

The D section completed their pools and will now advance to the knockout positional play-offs. In Pool A: Border B 55 points; Easterns B 41; SACD B 22: Eastern Province C 20. Pool B: Border C 55: Free State B 39: Central Gauteng D 30: Easterns C 4.

Women: A : Central Gauteng had a comfortable victory over Easterns A. Emma Beddoes lost only 13 points to Lauren Siddall. Diana Argyle was pushed to 5 games by Angie Clifton Parks who is playing competitively again after nearly a year’s lay-off because of injury. Adel Weir Nunan dropped a game to Lindy Riphagen as did Nicola Helwick to Michele Kohne. Western Province with Tenille van der Merwe and Milnay Louw at the helm disposed of Eastern Province 20-1.

In the C section Midlands finished first in Pool B beating Border 18-9 – a bit deceptive as it was 3 matches to 2. Western province B accounted for SACD A 16-7 so as to win pool A.

Refs on Board

At the weekend funded by the Lottery Squash South Africa hosted a National Refereeing Workshop attended by 26 delegates.

One of these delegates – mainly provincial referees with 3 national referees remained on Monday to referee matches . Five of the referees – Lee Pearson, Alex Hewitson, Craig Sadler, Ian Harvey and Leon Geldblom are remaining until the end of the week.

Using the 3 referee system with the qualified referee as the main referee and a player from each team as the side referees, is proving most successful.

A slight innovation is that the side referees are sitting closer together. The players are enjoying the experience and peace reigns !!!!!

Day Two Roundup
Liz Addison reports

As the weather warmed up in the quiet seaside town of East London so did the squash in some of the sections.

In the Men’s A section, Central Gauteng defeated Easterns 19-9 but the match could have swung the other way. Mike Tootill and Paul Atkinson (CG) added two wins for Central Gauteng beating J P Brits and Rudolf Coetser respectively. Former National player Craig Wapnick (Easterns) raced through the first two games 11-6 11-2 against Toboki Mohohlo but then relaxed allowing Mohohlo to take the next two games 11-3 11-3.

The fifth game was a tussle which Mohohlo managed to scrape through at 12-10 to give Central Gauteng their 3rd win. Devon Hendrickse (CG) and Emmanuel Musefwe then engaged in another five game battle which Hendrickse managed to win. In the number 1 clash, Eddie Charlton received a baptism by fire in his first match on South African soil when he played 3 times World Masters Squash Champion, (35+ and 40-44) Craig van der Wath.

Charlton took the first game 11-7 only to see van der Wath pocket the second 14-12 and the third 11-8. Charlton levelled matters at 11-8 in the fourth but van der Wath’s usual disciplined display saw him take the match 11-7 .

Western Province A had a runaway 20-0 victory against Central Gauteng B while defending champions, Kwazulu Natal outplayed Border 20-3. The highlight in this fixture was between Steve Coppinger and Clinton Leeuw.

With the National team for the World Team Championships being announced at the prize-giving, the pressure is on the top domestic players to perform.

The score seesawed between the two players 11-4 7-11 5-11 11-5 8 all. Coppinger gained the handout and two unforced errors from Leeuw saw Coppinger at his first match ball with which he clinched the match.

In the Kaplan Cup (women’s A section) defending champions Central Gauteng nearly found themselves on the losing end against Northerns. For Northerns Sonica Fritz and Robyn Baptiste beat Nicola Helwick and Sharon le Roux respectively. Cara Fourie took the first two games 11-8 11-9 against Adel Weir-Nunan but faded in the next 3 games 4-11 8-11 9-11.

Central Gautenger Di Argyle dropped the first game to Tukkies University student , Senade Haupt but won the second 11-7 and edged through the third 15-13 before dominating the fourth 11-4. Emma Beddoes ruling from the front of the court outplayed Cheyna Tucker, dropping only 8 points .

The Easterns/Eastern Province match was a tight affair with Easterns winning through 16-9 (includes 5 bonus points). World Masters champion (35+ and 40-44) Angie Clifton Parks drew on her experience to beat Anlen Jarman while Lauren Siddall was not under any pressure in her straight game win over Lizelle Goosen.

Midlands and Border are dominating the women’s B section.
Northerns A and Western Province B are heading for a Friday morning final shootout in the men’s B section as are SACD A and Free State in the C section. With the 8 teams in 2 pools in the Men’s D section scores are fairly evenly matched after two rounds.

Day one in East London - eventually
Liz Addison reports

Border Squash Association, which last hosted the annual Jarvis/Kaplan Cup in 2007 was quite relieved when the first day’s play was completed successfully.

A week ago East London , the host city was struck by torrential rain which flooded the Border Squash Office. Beacon Bay, the venue for the A section women sits on a water table and the floor started to rise.

On Friday afternoon, the 9th July Jane Thompson, the Border secretary drove to Beacon Bay – in her boot : 12 doz balls: 240 tournament brochures: 240 tubes toothpaste/soap for the goody bags: handbag with all personal belongings, housekeys etc – ran in for 5 minutes and when she came out her car had been stolen !!!!

So plan XXB – handbooks reprinted, balls flown from Johannesburg and play started at 8h30 on Monday.

Women's Kaplan Cup :

A Section : Western Province, fielding national champion and runner-up – Tenille van der Merwe and Milnay Louw supported by Karen Blom, Sacha West and Alexandra Fuller, who will be participating in the World Junior Championships in 10 days time, raced through the Easterns side 20-1. Lauren Siddall (Easterns) playing in her first Kaplan Cup had no answers to van der Merwe losing 3-11 9-11 4-11.

Northerns whose team includes two University top 6 players Cheyna Tucker and Senade Haupt, had a reasonably comfortably 18-9 win over Easter Province A, although 3 matches went to five games. Tucker edged through 11-8 in the decider against Lizelle Goosen with Robyn Baptiste also needing 5 games to subdue Allison Oshry.

17 year old Eastern Province player Elani Landman – also a member of the National junior side going to the USA, extended Cara Fourie to 9-11 in the fifth.

B Section: 11 teams playing in 2 pools with cross-over play-offs. Midlands and SACD both had full houses.

Men's Jarvis Cup: A Section :

Defending champions, Kwazulu Natal handed out a squash lesson to Easterns racing through 20-1. National champion Steve Coppinger whose brother Michael is in hospital in Tooting and who has had little opportunity to play, accounted for JP Britz in straight games while Mark Krasjak, fresh from the championships in Reunion, also waltzed through 3-0 against the recently crowned Universities champion Emmanues Musefwe, who hails from Zambia.

Western Province, spearheaded by Shaun le Roux and Rodney Durbach, inflicted a 19-7 defeat on host province, Border. Durbach edged through 12-10 against Tim Garner in the fifth game. In a vital clash Clinton Leeuw, who swopped Western Province colours for Border this year so as to have 3 Leeuw brothers in action for the home province, trailed 12-14 7-11 against le Roux before levelling matters at 2 games all and winning the tight fifth game 11-9.

The National team to play in the World Championships in Germany will be announced on Friday night and Le Roux will be available for South Africa.

Eddie Charlton also playing in his first Jarvis led central Gauteng A to an easy 20-4 win over their sister side .

B Section: This sees 3 provincial A teams: Northerns, Midlands and Eastern Province fighting with Western Province B fighting for top honours with Kwazulu Natal B and Northerns B likely to fill the
Bottom two slots.

C Section : Ironically 4 of South Africa’s top 20 players will be seen in action. South African Country Districts – the smaller provinces hold an annual championship in May from which they select two men’s and one women’s sides to compete. They are desperately wanting to move up sections so as to retain their top players who are lured away to the more powerful provinces.

Last year with Christo Potgieter and Jimmy Schlebusch they won the D Section so this year together with Ray Simbule – 3 of the player in the top 20 they have strong opposition from Free State to win the C Section.

Free State’s number 1 Paul Rodrigues jumped to number 12 on the rankings by upsetting Mike Tootill (5/8), Rudi Willemse (top 16), Clinton Leeuw (seeded 2nd) and Rodney Durbach (3/4) in the Nationals. Playing 2 in the Free State side is Jacques Swanepoel on a fleeting visit from the USA. These teams meet on the final day.

D section: 8 teams are doing battle in 2 pools with cross overplay –offs. Too early to comment at the moment.

HISTORY OF THE JARVIS CUP

South Africa formed the first national squash association in the world in 1910 (apart from the United States) which complied with the rules of the game as played in Britain (which had no association of its own) and inaugurated a national championship in the same year. Progress was fairly slow and it was only in 1955 that we saw the first international series at home against a British touring side. For many years it was felt that a full inter-provincial played in different centres annually would be an ideal tournament.

A dedicated sportsman by the name of A.K.J. Jarvis, father of Michael, Roger and Kendal, had won the Border tennis championships twice and was a regular follower of squash whether it were league or championship matches. In 1960 he passed away and his sons made an offer of a trophy in memory of their late father with a request that an Inter-Provincial tournament be held that same year.

So, in 1960, we saw the inaugural Jarvis Inter Provincial for men in Port Elizabeth with Eastern Province as the hosts. Appropriately the trophy was selected for several reasons, one of which was the quantity of champagne it could hold, for the winning captain had the honour of filling it and sharing it with every player at the tournament in celebration. In addition a special Jarvis tie was designed and it had two squash rackets with the Jarvis emblem. Another innovation was to select a final match between the winning team and one representing “the best of the rest.”

Our South African ladies were not far behind because they, too, decided on an annual inter provincial, and the first one was held in the same year (1960) in Johannesburg. A trophy for this tournament was kindly donated by Dorothy Kaplan, wife of South African player, Cecil Kaplan.

Both tournaments were played regularly every year at separate centres but were only brought together in 1968 (in Harare, the then Salisbury) when common sense prevailed and ever since they have been played at the same venue. Here we have the two top South African tournaments giving leading players the opportunity to meet and compete with the basis being sportsmanship and camaraderie, and surely these have given rise to the tremendous expansion of Masters’ events, the numerous school and university tournaments which are in themselves training grounds for promising players.

The fine sporting spirit gave a wonderful foundation that was so clearly seen by Mr. Jarvis and the bonhomie of all associated with the various functions has led to various trophies

being donated over the years. Apart from the Jarvis and Kaplan cups, we had the XXV Club trophy for the mens’ B section and Kwa-Zulu Natal presented the Banana Bowl for the C section. The Ladies’ B section has the Ransom Trophy and more were to follow for Gary Thompson donated a trophy for the province achieving the best overall results.

For sportsmanship we have the Seccie de Villiers trophy to commemorate a great South African player, a character of squash indeed who passed away in 1980 at the age of thirty seven and also the Clifton Parks trophy donated by those delightful sisters Chantal and Angie for sportsmanship in the Kaplan cup.

The Greg Hammond trophy for the most promising male player commemorates the untimely death of a fine young player and then there is the Lance Sibbald trophy in memory of a loyal top player from Kwa-Zulu Natal who tragically lost his life in a motor accident in America.

The donation of so many trophies tells it all and apart from the silver, the participation in these tournaments is a privilege in itself – the spin off has been nothing short of fantastic and the goodwill among our men and women players, administrators, sponsors and spectators is there forever. In this, the fifty second Jarvis/Kaplan event, there is no doubt that the quality of play, the court craft, the fitness and the goodwill, plus the participation by all will prove to be the jewel of South African Squash.
