Sobhy wins World Juniors -
the US View ...
It was a historic moment for US Squash when Amanda Sobhy
became the first American to win a WSF-recognised World
Championship.
So we had to ask US Junior Women's Head Coach Jack Wyant
a couple of questions, didn't we ...
The US juniors seem to be
coming on well, how has this come about ?
US
Squash fully committed to the softball game around 1990.
Since that time we’ve been very fortunate to have so many
world class coaches move to the US and train our juniors.
I think we’re just now seeing the results of these efforts. Interestingly,
Khaled Sohby was one of the first to move to the US to
coach. Now, his daughter is world junior champion.
You must have been pleased with Amanda's performance ?
It was a tricky match with Nour being injured [Nour
sustained an injury in the last few points of her semi-final].
To be fair, I’d say the standard was higher in both semi
finals with all four being virtually equal players, as the
scores would indicate.
That said, Amanda dealt with the situation, pressure and
worked Nour from front to back very well. In my opinion, she
deserved to be the winner.
What might this win mean to US squash ?
I think this win will put to bed the myth that we can’t
compete with the world’s best.
As I said previously, we’re blessed to have fantastic
coaches from around the world so provided we continue to
refine our structure and grow the game domestically I think
we can have sustained success at an international level.

"We are incredibly proud of Amanda, she has worked very hard
to achieve this milestone. This is a tremendous
accomplishment for her personally and for squash in the
United States.
"When we see individual results such as Amanda’s on the
world stage, coupled with our country’s strong showings at
other recent World Championships, the growth of squash in
the US and success of our junior program has never been more
evident".
