Squash in
the Island Games

The week long multi-sport NatWest Island Games comes
to the Isle of Wight the final week in June, and for only
the second time in its 24 year history Squash is included in
the event.
With around 4000 athletes from 25 member islands competing
in 14 sports during the course of one week, the Isle of
Wight NatWest Island Games 2011 is anticipated to be the
largest games to date. It will certainly be the largest
international multi-sport event ever held on the Isle of
Wight.
The Squash event will comprise of Team, Singles, Doubles and
Mixed Doubles Competition during the week.
Squads of up to 10 players from Islands including
Guernsey, Isle of Wight, Menorca,
Shetlands, Cayman, Jersey, Isle of Man,
Bermuda and Gibraltar will be competing for
the Olympic style Gold, Silver & Bronze medals. It will be a
great opportunity for Squash players from a wide variety of
backgrounds to showcase the sport.
Competitors will include former World no.14 Nick Taylor,
several PSA and WISPA World Circuit players, County and
nationally ranked juniors as well as regular club level
players. A team of seven ESR and international referees will
take charge of matches, including Hampshire’s Stan
Thornton.
Squash matches will be held at the Westridge Centre Ryde.
All seven courts have been specially re-furbished by the
Isle of Wight Council with grants from England Squash &
Racketball. Providing a lasting legacy for the local
community and Squash from the Games.

Refurbished courts ready for games
The NatWest Games start with
a massive Carnival Procession through Ryde on
Saturday evening, followed by the Squash Team event, Sunday
and Monday, Singles Tuesday & Wednesday, Doubles Thursday &
Friday of the week 25/6/11 – 1/7/11.
