Harris Inter County Championships 2009
14th/15th March, Manchester

HARRIS
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS. DAY TWO.
Arthur Curran reports
Back at
Sportcity again this morning for the culmination of
the Inter County Championships, we were again
treated to a fantastic day of squash played by some
fantastic young players in a great friendly spirit.
With FORTY matches to be played to find the 1 to 4
in each of four groups, in turned into a very busy
but well organised and enjoyable day.
In the
early session we saw the four ties to establish the
3rd and 4th place in each
group.
In the
Under 19 Boys, Cambridgeshire started at a terrific
pace, taking the first two matches 3 – 1 and 3 – 0,
Yorkshire took the third match 3 – 0 but then
Cambridge surged ahead again with wins from Daniel
McGinn and Sammy Chambers over Chris Rusling and
James Earles respectively, taking the tie, and 3rd
place quite comfortably 4 – 1.
In the
Under 19 Girls, Surrey started at a fair pace with
Claire Wright and Rhian Skinner winning against
Sammy Blundell and Hattie Crawford, but then their
opponents Gloucestershire powered back with three
great wins by Emily Penkett, Rebecca Quiney and
Julianne Courtice to take the third place 3 games to
2.
The Under
15 Boys saw Miles Jenkins (Sussex) winning against
Ben Dixon (Middlesex) then Matthew Wells (Middlesex)
levelling the match with a win against Ed Clarke
(Sussex). Then Jacob Osbourne made it 2 – 1 to
Sussex with a very close win 3/2 against Ashil Shah,
followed up by two fairly comfortable wins for
Stuart Allcock and Cameron Western, giving Sussex a
fine 4 – 1 victory for third place.
The Under
15 Girls saw the young Yorkshire team blast away to
take a very comfortable 5 – 0 win, with Jess Dixon,
Katie Campion, Emily Peach and Hannah Shipley
winning comfortably, then Millie Pughe, in a great
match against Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) just
holding out at 3/2 to complete the whitewash and
take the third place.
The second
session featuring all four Finals started off with
Gloucestershire against Surrey in the Under 19 Boys,
and what great squash we were about to see. Mark
Broekman (Glos) beat Peter Fozard (Surrey) 3 – 0,
then Sam Davidson (Glos) lost to Michael Robinson
(Surrey) 3 – 1, and Sam Cantle beat Matthew Costain
3 games to 2 to give Gloucester a 2/1 lead. Next, on
the all-glass showcourt came the best games of the
day, seeing Nathan Lake (Glos) defeat Laurence
Bruggeman 3/1, and then Anthony Graham (Glos),
recently crowned British Under 19 National Champion,
played excellently to beat David Wardle of Surrey, a
prominent member of the English Under 17 team, with
a score of 3 games to 1, thus taking the
Championship for Gloucestershire 4 games to 1.
The Under
19 Girls was the match that overran all the others
(there is always one) and what a match it was,
between Yorkshire and Northumbria. Yorkshire started
off really well with two good wins by Charlotte
Kirkwood and Maria Emmerson over Samantha Ward and
Rachel Oswald respectively, but then Anna Oswald
pulled one back for Northumbria with a great 3/2 win
over Grace Smith. Then the 1st string
players went on court, with English No 2 ranked
Under 19 Kimberley Hay winning quite comfortably 3 –
0 against Yorkshire’s No I Katie Smith, still only
15 years old. Last, but certainly not least, with a
great crowd watching because all other matches had
finished, Hannah Cliff (North.) took a 2 – 0 lead
against Yorkshire’s Jade Thompson , still not quite
16, but then Jade fought back hard to take the next
game. Unfortunately Jade could not continue the
fightback and Hannah took the next game to win 3/1,
and take the Championship for Northumbria 3 games to
2.
Both the
Boys and Girls Under 19’s showed some great skill
and character, so look out for these names in the
near future, they are the England stars to come.
In the
Under 15 age group, the boys Championship was won
fairly comfortably by the youngsters from Yorkshire,
taking a 4 games to 1 win against the boys from
Warwickshire, but then the young girls from
Warwickshire showed the boys the way with a very
hard earned win over the young girls from Surrey by
3 games to 2.
So this
year’s Inter County Champions are as follows:-
Under 19
Boys. Gloucestershire
Under 19 Girls. Northumbria.
Under 15 Boys Yorkshire.
Under 15 Girls. Warwickshire.
So, a fair
spread around the country for the trophies, which
were afterwards presented to all the teams by the
lovely Vicky Botwright, former World No 5, last
years Women’s Open World Championship runner-up, and
of course the Head Coach here at the National Squash
Centre. Many thanks to Vicky for taking time out to
present these awards, and I would personally like to
congratulate Alison Henley of England Squash and
Racketball, based here at Sportcity, for the very
well organised running of the tournament.
