10-Dec,
Finals:
Saurav & Dipika claim National titles
Guatam Das reports
Highest world ranked Indian star Dipika Pallikal
clinched her maiden national title when she dropped a game
before winning against Tamil Nadu’s Anaka Alankamony
11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, while Defending men's champion
Saurav Ghosal came from behind to beat HarinderPal
Sandhu 8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-1 in the finals of the National
Squash Championship here today.
In the women’s final, Anaka gave good account of her game
against a highly seeded world star but Dipika made short
work in clinching the title.. Anaka tried her best keep
Dipika in check but the latter always wriggled out of the
rival clutches to come up with some delectable shots for
points. In earlier years, Dipika’s try at the title
were ended by Joshna Chinappa, who could not compete in this
nationals due to injury problems
The men’s final seem to be heading for a tight finish as
both Saurav and Harinder were going neck to neck and it
looked as though Harinder was not going to give away easily.
Harinder clinched the first game withhis strategy to stay at
back court and keeping the pace at high levels and then get
his shots to success. However, Saurav, who has bundle of
experience having been in the circuit for longer time meant
business and kept Harinder at bay in the next three games.
Saurav’s tactic of keeping the ball away from his opponent
worked wonders. Though Harinder, at times, tried to make
good to deny Saurav the ground to play his shots from back
court, the latter refused to give in and merely kept the
volleys long and then went for his shots to upset Harinder.
Later, M.Vijayakuar I.A.S, Member Secretary, Sports
Development Corporation of Tamil Nadu and Srivastan
Subramaniam , Secretary General SRFI gave away the prizes to
the winners.

Semis:
Sandhu shocks Suchde in Semis
Guatam Das reports
Harinder
Pal Singh of the Indian Squash Academy thrashed second
seed Siddharth Suchde in straight games of 11-5, 11-8, 12-10
in 53 mins to set up a title clash with top seed and
defending champion, Saurav Ghosal in the National
Senior Men and Women squash championship here tonight.
Saurav, who beat Ravi Dixit 11-4,11-7, 11-6. In the other
men’s semi finals, Harinder had to bring in his best
resources to good effect and actually his decision to adapt
waiting game helped greatly as Siddharth was seen time and
again went for shots with aggression and paid the penalty in
committing errors. Though Siddharth could have avoided such
display, particularly knowing the strengths of Harinder.
The whole match witnessed replete of rallies and Harinder in
particular did not exert much as his decision to keep the
ball in play helped him to come up with drops to break the
rallies. Siddarth’s errors mainly came from his front court
play.
The third game was interesting as Siddharth who fought back
managed to be match ball up. Here, Harinder kept to his
basics and displayed his skills in playing the drop shots at
appropriate times. However, Harinder finished off the set
and the match with a superbly executed boast, which
Siddharth responded hitting the tin.
Expectedly, Top seed in thewomen's event Dipika Pallikal,
India’s highest world ranked women star had another easy run
against Ankita Sharma of Maharashtra 11-2, 11-6, 11-5 but
faces a tough customer in Anaka Alankamony in the
final tomorrow. Anaka today beat Aparajitha Balamurukan at
11-8, 11-4, 11-3.
The championship also saw the National coach Cyrus Poncha
upsetting the second seed of the tournament Yudhvir Singh
Katoch(Mah) in a very exciting match.

08-Dec, Quarters:
Dixit despatches Mangoankar
as most seeds progress
Guatam Das reports
Indian Squash Academy wards’ rise in stature was evident as
Ravi Dixit ousted higher seeded Mahesh Mangaonkar of
Maharashtra 3-1 to progress to the semi final of the
National Senior squash championship here today.
Making his intentions of making the last four clear from the
beginning of the match, Ravi was patient and kept his cool
and mainly wanted to assess the strengths of 3/4 seed
Mahesh. Despite dropping the first game, Ravi went on to win
at 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 in 41 minutes.
As for Ravi-Mahesh tie, the former’s on court movements were
a sight to watch and the manner in which he mixed attack and
defense was immaculate. Though it was a neck to neck match,
Ravi carried on with positivity in his game and rattled
Mahesh with some delightful drops whenever needed.
In the first game, the rivals were 9-9 but Mahesh came up
with successful nicks to win but Ravi was calm in composure
and his percentage saw no unforced errors in his game. His
decision to keep the ball in play and alternating with
attack and defense, Ravi went on to equalizer game score. As
the match wore on Ravi was outstanding and maintained his
form to great success.
Delhi’s Gavrav Nandrajog, who survived some anxious
moments before beating Kush Kumar yesterday, could not
sustain the onslaught of highly experienced Harinder Pal
Singh in the quarterfinals today. Harinder needed just 30
minutes to dispose off Nandrajog at 11-6, 11-9, 11-3.
In the women’s encounters, top seeded and India’s highest
ranked star player Dipika Palikal came on to the
court and swiftly went about winning against a under-17
Delhi girl, Tanvi Khanna at 11-2, 11-1, 11-3, while 3/4
seeded Aprajitha Balamurugan dropped the first game
11-13, before winning the nextthree games at 11-4, 11-3,
11-2 and the match against Sai Meera, who is seeded 5-8.
