Suez Helsinki Summer Challenge 2015
27-30 Aug, Helsinki, Finland, $5k

30-Aug, Final:
Miko makes it all the way in Helsinki
Poku Salo reports

Miko Äijänen continued his unbelievably fine form in the final of the Suez Helsinki Summer Challenger. Coming all the way from the qualification Äijänen again produced some excellent squash in his 6th match in four days to beat French third seed Baptiste Masotti in the final.

The first game progressed evenly to 6 all. After 6 all Äijänen took gameball at 10-8, but Masotti equalled the score. In the tie brake Äijänen took two straight points and the game. The second game looked as going easily to Äijänen.

The scores were 3-1, 8-2 and 10-3 after some seven unforced error by Masotti, who at that stage got a grip of the game and came to pointa before Aäijänen could take the game with his 7th game ball. In the third game Äijänen again started strongly.

After 8-3 he somehow lost the control and Masotti cruised to game ball at 10-8. That waked Äijänen up and hi managed to clinch the next three pointa and the match in straight games.

”I could never have believed that I am standing here with the trophy” said the happy winner after the presentation.

Äijänen’s coach Sami Elopuro was very proud of his players achievement.

”One cannot be more proud than this.”
was Elopuro’s comment.

29-Aug, Quarters/Semis
Miko keeps home hopes alive in Helsinki
Poku Salo reports

The younger Äijänen brother, Miko, produced some of his short career’s finest squash by reaching the final of the Suez Helsinki Summer Challenger.

In the quarters qualifier Äijänen took on 8th seed August Dussourd from France. In an even three games match Äijänen was the only one of three Finns to reach the semifinals.

In the top half of the draw qualifiers Jami Äijänen and Emyr Evans were unable to threaten top seed Aqeel Rehman and third seed Babtiste Masotti who both took a 3-0 victory to reach the semis.

In the bottom half qualifier Saadeldin Abouaish EGY beat 6th seed Jaakko Vähämaa FIN in four games to meet Miko Äijänen in the semis.

In the first semi Masotti overcame topseeded Rehman in a close four game match. The second semi was the one everybody had been waiting for.

Miko Äijänen has produced some excellent squash during the tournament and this evening was no exception. Äijänen played an almost mistake-free match and reached the final with a straight games victory.

28-Aug, Round One:
Äijänen brothers march on in Helsinki
Poku Salo reports

If the qualification was to the liking of the Finnish audience, the first round doubled the joy.

Jami Äijänen was the first of the qualifiers on court and gave Swiss 5th seed Manuel Wanner very few chances to go ahead to the quarters.

Qualifier Emyr Evans from Wales was ahead and leading the game for most of the time against 7th seed Adrian Østbye from Norway.

In the clash between the Egyptians qualifier Saadeldin Abouaish showed some excellent squash after two tightly fought games by taking the 3rd and the 4th in style.

The last of the first round matches made it all worthwhile for the audience.

Miko Äijänen, the last of the qualifiers took on seconnd seed Jan Koukal from the Czech Republic. Äijänen got a good start and was cruising towards an easy victory, or so it seemed.

In the third game Koukal came back and after some arguments by both players with the referee, Koukal took the game. The fourth game was anybodys affair untill Äijänen managed to take the game and a place in the quarters.

In the four other matches 1st seed Ageel Rehman, 3rd seed Baptiste Masotti, 6th seed Jaakko Vähämaa and 8th seed Auguste Dussourd all went safely through to the quarters.

27-Aug, Qualifying:
Top seeds out, Äijänen brothers in
Poku Salo reports

It was a good day for the locals at the Suez Helsinki Summer Challenger in Helsinki - three Finns made it to the qualifying finals and two of them took a place in the main draw.

The Äijänen brothers were the heroes of the first day. Younger brother Miko first beat Spain’s Pascal Gomez in straight games and then in the qualifying finals first seed David Haley from Wales had to say goodbye to a main draw place.

Older brother Jami’s first round opponent was team-mate Ville Karsikas. In the last match of the day Jami beat second seed Miles Jenkins from England.

The third Finn Kristian Rautiainen came close to a main draw place, but was eventually beaten in five games by Saadeldin Abouaish from Egypt.
