Hewitt and DiMauro win
world squash doubles title
Canadians delighted with SF success
Stephanie Hewitt and Jessica DiMauro of Toronto won
the women’s world doubles squash title this past weekend in
San Francisco.
Hewitt and DiMauro defeated Fiona Geaves and Suzie
Pierrepont of England in the championship final on Sunday
15-6, 6-15, 15-13, 15-12. The Canadian champions were coming
off a tough semifinal victory over Dana Betts and Emily
Lungstrum of the U.S., the previous day by a 9-15, 15-9,
15-11, 15-9 score.
“Steph and I are so thrilled to win this event, we have been
working towards it all year,” said DiMauro. ’’We knew it was
going to be a physical match where we had to be very patient
and wait for the appropriate opportunities. We made a
conscious effort to dictate the pace and rhythm of the
match. It was very intense.”
Canadians Marci Rier and Miranda Ranieri were eliminated in
the first round losing a marathon match to Narelle Krizak
and Natarsha Mcelhinny of Australia 16-17, 15-10, 17-15,
15-13.
In the men’s doubles final, Ben Gould and Paul Price
of Australia defeated John Russell and Clive Leach of
England in four games.
Two Canadian pairs were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Mike Pirnak and James Hewitt lost to the Australian
champions while Viktor Berg and Gary Waite fell to the
Preston Quick and Whitten Morris of the U.S.
The other two Canadian teams were ousted in the round of 16.
Mike Leckie and Tim Loat were also eliminated by the winning
Australians and Tyler Millard and Adrian Griffin lost to
Morris Clothier and Greg Park of the U.S.
“Canada had the largest contingent with six teams and the
players represented us very well,” said John Hickey, the
doubles competition chairman for Squash Canada. “It is clear
that other countries besides the U.S., and Canada are
starting to make their mark and that all bodes well for the
future of doubles squas
