Nov 2013: Hallamshire members aim for Longest
match
Sheffield squash club attempts world
record to raise money for NSPCC |
On 19th and 20th November
the Hallamshire Tennis, Squash and Racketball Club in
Sheffield will be attempting to break the Guinness World
Record for the longest game of squash singles ever
played, to raise funds for the ChildLine Schools Service,
as part of the NSPCC’s ‘GO Green’ day in Sheffield.
Four members of the Hallamshire on Ecclesall Road, who all
live in Sheffield, Thomas Murton, 26, Josh Park,
19, Adam Snow, 21 and Alex Lewis, 21 will
attempt to play against each other for 36 hours, running two
games concurrently in case of injury, with only a short 5
minute break allowed every hour.
There
will be also lots of activities planned through the night to
keep the duos motivated, such as live music and spectator
support from both members and local students from Sheffield
Hallam University. Hallamshire is seeking sponsorship in aid
of the player’s squash-marathon from its member’s and the
general public in a bit to raise £6,960 which will enable
the ChildLine Schools Service reach 580 local primary
children in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
John Mullins, Head Squash & Racketball Coach from the
Hallamshire said: “Everyone is getting really excited about
the World Record attempt in November. There’s a real buzz
around the club and the players have been putting in extra
hours of training. We are looking forward to a fantastic
atmosphere throughout the 36 hours as we attempt to break
the world record in Sheffield and raise as much money as
possible to support the NSPCC’s ChildLine Schools Service in
the city.”
The record attempt is just one of a number of GO Green
fundraising events taking part in Sheffield on 20 November
to help raise money for the ChildLine Schools Service, a
service provided by the NSPCC, for children in Sheffield,
South Yorkshire and across the UK. The ChildLine Schools
Service is aimed at primary school aged children,
particularly focusing on 9 to 11 year olds.
Claire Reading, NSPCC community fundraising manager
said: “We’re delighted and very grateful that the
Hallamshire is supporting the GO Green day for the NSPCC’s
ChildLine Schools Service by putting on this fantastic
event. Everyone at the NSPCC wishes the team good luck for
the record breaking attempt.”
The current world record for the longest squash match is
held by Guy Fotherby and Darren Withey for 31 hours, 35
minutes and 34 seconds which was broken in Thame,
Oxfordshire on 13-14 January 2012. Members of the public are
also invited to drop by and support the players as they
attempt to break the world record.
