Knight victorious in Ottawa Final
Heather Wallace reports
The players at today’s final at the GoodLife Open were led out on to
the court by two young GoodLife juniors, Peri Agate & Abbey Russell
in similar fashion to the English Premier League. After some
photographs & handshakes the final got underway.
The first game saw the players trading points, Danish keeping it
close with a very focused top seed Martin Knight.
Danish Atlas Khan however was not able to sustain his good play,
Martin finishing strong, taking the first game 11-8. The second game
again was close, with Danish winning most of his points from the
backhand side, however his backhand was also his undoing as he made
many errors to the front left of the court.
Towards the end of the second game, Danish lost some composure when
he tied the game 9-9, then thought he won the next rally to get to
game ball, but was denied when a let was played over one of his
pickups. Knight was as focused as ever at this crucial point in the
second game. He kept the pressure on, Danish again hit two backhand
short errors to give the game to Martin 13-11.
The loss of the second game definitely had an effect on Danish & at
6-0 down in the third he retired with a shin problem which resulted
from an awkward front court pick up earlier on in the match.

Khan & Knight to battle in GoodLife Open Final
Heather Wallace reports
In the first semifinal No. 2
seed Danish Atlas Khan (Pakistan) beat No. 4 seed, Eric Galvez,
(Mexico), 3-1, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-2.
The first game was very chippy, but from the second game onwards
Danish picked up the pace, taking the ball much earlier forcing
Galvez to scramble for the remainder of the match.
The second semifinal, No. 1 seed, Martin Knight (new Zealand) beat
Canada’s Dane Sharp, No. 3 seed, 3-0, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4.
The players traded points in the first game which was close with
long rallies. Dane lost patience midway through the second game with
3 errors in quick succession, which gave Martin a good lead. He
capitalized on this & took the second game. Dane started to tire in
the third, with Martin running out the third game easily.
Top seeds through to GoodLife semis
Heather Wallace reports
No 1 seed Martin Knight was just too experienced & steady for Tom
Ford winning 3-0, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9.
No.2 seed Danish Atlas Khan had a 3-1 win over Scott Arnold, 11-8,
5-11, 11-5, 11-8.
The match of the night saw No. 4 seed Dane Sharp win a very tight
battle in 5 games over Geoffrey Demont 10-12, 11-5, 6-11, 11-4,
11-8. Sharp after the match said “I had to fight hard to close the
court down against Geoffrey since his volleys were killing me,
sending me all over the court. I started to play much higher, then
attack.”
No. 4 seed, Eric Galvez had a 3-1 win over Mike Harris 4-11, 11-7,
11-7, 11-6. Eric after making 7 errors in the first game, found his
range after that & was too good at the front of the court for the
remainder of the match. Eric said” mike came out playing very well &
forced me to work harder in the remainder of the match to win it.”

Dane Sharp lone Canadian to advance
in the GoodLife Open openers
Heather Wallace reports
The first match on this afternoon saw Danish Atlas Khan, No.
2 seed from Pakistan, have a relatively comfortable 3-1 win over
Steven London from England. Steven played his best squash in the
third game taking it 11-9, but could not sustain the momentum losing
the fourth game. Danish won 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5 in 55 minutes
In the second match, Scott Arnold (Australia) dominated the
match, taking it easily 3-0 over Thomas Brinkman (Canada). The score
was 11-6, 11-8,11-6 in 25 minutes.
The third match was undoubtedly, the match of the day, with Mike
Harris (England) prevailing over Mike McCue, (Canada) in
a hard fought win, 3-1. McCue came out of the blocks fast, taking
advantage over Harris’s loose & error prone play in the first game,
winning it 11-4.
The tables turned in the second when Harris found better length &
became more aggressive in his play taking the ball earlier & into
the front court much better. In the third game, Harris blew a 9-3
lead, allowing McCue back into the game, but with a lot more work,
eventually winning the third, 13-11. The fourth game was a much more
conservative affair with both players trading points & playing
patient length, again Harris squeaking it out, 13-11, to take the
match 3-1 in 70 minutes.
Unlike the match before, the fourth match between Eric Galvez,
(Mexico) & Justin Beard, (Australia) was a duel at the front of the
court, both attacking short at every opening. Eric had the more
deadly front court game, winning 3-0, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6 in 38
minutes.
The all Canadian match up saw Dane Sharp winning 3-0,
11-6,11-4, 12-10, over Matthew Serediak 35 minutes.
Geoffrey Demont (France) had to deal with the shooting
Freddie Reid (Canada), narrowly winning the first game 14-12. In the
second game Fred made far too many unforced errors & Geoffrey easily
took the second game, 11-4. Fred found his range again in the third
game, but Geoffrey was far too steady & his consistency won out,
13-11 in the third. Geoffrey took the match, 14-12, 11-4, 13-11 in
31 minutes.
The all English match up saw Tom Ford winning 3-0, 11-9,
11-8, 11-8 in 42 minutes, over James Earles. This match was tougher
than the score line suggests with only a couple of errors at crucial
times by James giving Tom the victory.
The final match of the night saw No.1 seed, Martin Knight,
(New Zealand) showing all of his experience easily beating home
grown Adrian Dudzicki, 11-6, 11-5, 11-8 in 28 minutes.
