Savcor Finnish Open 2011
08-13 Feb, Mikkeli, Finland, $15k
Coppinger claims
Finnish title in Mikkeli

Poku Salo reports

Third seed Stephen Coppinger from South Africa is the new Finnish Open champion. In Sundays final Coppinger defeated first seed Joey Barrington from England in four games.

Barrington got a good start to the match and took 5-0 and 7-3 leads before Coppinger got his game sorted. He saved two game balls and got one himself before Barrington managed to take the game 15-13.

In the second game Coppinger was in there already from the beginning and kept the lead all the way to equal the match at 1-1. The third game was closely fought until 6-6 when Barrington started to show some problems with the back of his thigh. The movement was not quite the same as so far and Coppinger could take charge.

In the fourth Barrington was not anymore able to challenge the South African and he took the Finnish Open title.

"Of course I'm happy with the title, but it's never nice to win when your opponent is injured", said the Champion at the after match interview.

Semi-Finals in Mikkeli
Poku Salo reports

The first semifinal was between the top seeded Joey Barrington and unseeded Bradley Hindle.

Hindle, whose nearly two hours quarterfinal ended 16 hours ago started the match strongly. He went to a 8-0 lead and took the game 11-4. In the second game Barrington started to get into the match and it looked as he was going to take it at game ball 10-9. Hindle fought back and took the game 13-11, but the quarterfinal marathon started to take its toll. Barrington started to take charge of the match in the third and marched on to take the match.

"Bradley's recovery from yesterday's marathon was amazing. I knew it's going to be a tough match. He was a lot more relaxed than me but I managed to settle down in the third", said Barrington after the match.

"I think I played well and it was a good match. I was mentally fitter than yesterday, but the harder I pushed the harder it seemed", commented Hindle .

Third seed Steve Coppinger's performance yesterday against Henrik Mustonen promised a tight fought battle today against second seed Omar Abdel Aziz. The match started with Coppinger taking charge and he went from 9-2 to a 11-7 win in the first. In the second game Aziz came into the game, but Coppinger was able to win it 11-9. In the third Aziz managed to get to game ball before Coppinger took the match with his third match ball.

"I saw the top players in the Swedish Open last week and that inspired me. I was lucky in the first round and yesterday I played well. I haven't played in a final for a while so I'm looking forward to tomorrow's final", said Coppinger.

"He played better than me and deserves to be in the final. He was pushing me to the corners and I was not patient enough. I hope the crowd will enjoy tomorrows final and I come back next year for a new try", was Aziz's comment.

Hindle wins Finish Marathon
Poku Salo reports

The first seed Joey Barrington didn’t let qualifier Jonathan Harford spoil his chances in the Finnish Open. Barrington was in charge despite the numbers in the first two games. In the third game Harford was left at two points and Barrington comfortably through to the semis.

The second match of the night saw second seed Omar Abdel Aziz a lot better than in the first round, where Matias Tuomi took him to five games. Qualifier Rasmus Nielsen only managed to press Aziz in the second game where he got to ten points.

The third quarter was the one the home crowd had been waiting for. Unfortunately it was let down by a brilliant performance of Stephen Coppinger. Mustonen was forced to a lot of errors while Coppinger managed to make only one or two. A straight three games victory and Coppinger through to the semis.

The last match of the night was between Bradley Hindle and Davide Bianchetti. Bianchetti was last on court also in the first round and had a 94 minutes match. Tonight the match was tense and even. There were two breaks for bleeding, lets and arguing with the referee. The 111 minutes match was nevertheless exiting and entertaining.

One seed falls in
Finnish First Round

The first round of the Savcor Finnish Open saw one of the four seeds falling out.

Fourth seed Mark Krajcsak from Hungary was the victim as Italy’s Davide Bianchetti took a five games win in the longest match of the night. Topseeded Joey Barrington had no problems in overcoming qualifier Leandro Romiglio in three games and third seed Stephen Coppinger had it even easier, as Robbie Temple had to retire with an injury after the first game.

Second seed Omar Abdel Aziz on the other hand was in trouble with local wild card Matias Tuomi. Matias put on an excellent performance pressing Aziz to five games. In the fifth Matias was 9-8 up when a very questionable shot from Aziz was accepted and turned the score to 9 all instead of two matchballs to Tuomi.

Finnish hopes now lay on Henrik Mustonen who moved Kristian Frost Olesen all over the court and had him gasping for air already in the first game.

The lineup for the quarterfinals promises an interesting day on Friday.
