Savcor Finnish Open 2009
22-25 Oct, Mikkeli, Finland, $6k
Saffery Queen of Savcor
Poku Salo reports

Deon Saffery from Wales won the Savcor Finnish Open title today in Mikkeli.

In the final Saffery defeated Low Wee Wern from Malaysia in the best and most exiting match of the tournament. Wern got a good start to the match and took an early 6-1 lead and went on to game-ball at 10-6. Saffery fought back and had a game-ball at 12-11. Wern eventually won the game 15-13.

The second game was close all the way and both players had game-balls. The went to Saffery 16-14. In the third Wern looked like she had lost her concentration and Saffery got the game 11-2. In the fourth game fortunes were reversed, as Wern took the game from 3 all in one hand 11-3. In the fifth and deciding game Saffery was the stronger player and a few unforced errors by Wern allowed Saffery to win the game and match.

”I’m very happy for this victory as it was my first WISPA-title,” said a smiling Saffery. ”In my first final I lost to Low in December,” added the Finnish Open Champion.

Wern and Saffery in Finnish final
Poku Salo reports

Top seeded Low Wee Wern from Malaysia will play in Sunday's final of the Savcor Finnish Open. In the semis she beat 8th seed Celia Allamargot from France after being one game down. Allamargot looked like she would take the match to the fifth game when leading 8-5 in the fourth. Four unforced errors by Allamargot and two winners by Wern decided the match in her favour.

”I'm looking forward to the final as I beat Deon last time we played,” said Wee Wern.

In the final she will meet Deon Saffery from Wales who managed to beat second seed Fiona Moverley from England. ”I'm happy to play in the final. Last time I lost to Fiona in five games. If my legs recover by tomorrow I feel confident,” said a smiling Saffery after the match.
