English U11 Squash Championships 2011
02-03 April, National Squash Centre, Manchester

3rd April - Final (Sunday Afternoon)
Lazarus and Khoo become
the first English Under 11 Champions

Chris Nutley reports

*1 Elise Lazarus (Essex) bt 3/4* Laura Neill (Northumbria)
                                   11/4 11/0 11/3
*3/4 Oscar Khoo (Middlesex) bt Jack Mitterer (Kent)
                                   3/11 11/2 11/9 11/2

Elise Lazarus (Essex) is the clear Under 11 No1 and has already been No1 on the Under 13 rankings and started the red hot favourite for the title. Standing in her way was Laura Neill (Northumbria) who is herself a top 5 ranked player.

It was Elise who got the flier and raced into a 5-0 lead, before Laura
got going. However Elise was simply too strong and accurate - she plays quality squash that you normally only begin to see in older girls. In the end it was a great 11/4 11/0 11/3 victory for Elise to take the
first of what I suspect will be many national titles t
o come. Laura was
well beaten but had enjoyed a very successful weekend and losing to a
player of Elise's quality in the English final is still a great achievement.

The boys final looked clear cut on paper - a 3/4 seed against a non seed. However that doesn't take into account Jack Mitterer (Kent) who has beaten seed after seed all weekend and looks a player of the future.

Jack desperately wanted this one and prevented Oscar Khoo getting into his stride in the first - taking it easily 11/2 - another shock on the cards maybe!

At the start of the second Oscar settled into his game and began to
control the rallies and quickly levelled proceedings. The third game
was going the same way with Oscar leading 9-2 before Jack got back into
it. However after saving one game ball he lost the next and then
quickly faded in the fourth as Khoo grew in confidence and took the
title.

A great weekend of squash and a great celebration of all the Under 11
activity that has gone on this season. This event is here to stay and I
suspect next year's championship will see an even greater entry level.

3rd April - Semis (Sunday Morning)
English Under 11 Championships
Chris Nutley reports

Another busy day at the National Squash Centre with the English Under 11
championships entering the final stages. Oh and there's a Man City game
to contend with which adds to the excitement and buzz. The squash and
enthusiasm shown by all the players had been great on Saturday and this
continued this morning with everyone fighting for final finishing
positions.

So - the Girls semi finals and the first upset came courtesy of the
impressive Laura Neill (Northumbria) who downed No2 seed Lucy Soulby (Yorkshuire).

Laura started slowly and quickly found herself 8-2 down in the first and although got herself back into it lost out 11/9. The second couldn't have been much different with Laura dominating and squaring the match 1-1. The third got tight again and was pretty much point for point. At 9-9 Laura found the edge and sneaked it 11/9 and from then on looked in control and took the 4th to seal a 9/11 11/2 11/9 11/7 victory to take her into the final.

Laura's opponent in the final will be Elise Lazarus (Essex) who is looking every bit the No1 seed. Elise took the first 2 games of her semi against Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire) quite easily. However Ellen
wasn't going to let go easily and battled to a 6-2 lead in the third before Elise took control once more and won it 11/8 for a 3-0 victory.

An all Hampshire boys final had been muted and we will see that clash of players....but sadly not in the final. They will have to be content with the 3/4 Play Off as both No1 seed Jared Carter (Hampshire) and Jack Turvey (Hampshire) losing their semi finals.

Jared had a great tussle with Oscar Khoo (Middlesex) but Oscar just looked that little bit stronger, particularly at the business end of each game. In the end it was Oscar's who took it 11/9 11/7 9/11 11/9.

The other semi was a real cracker between No2 seed Jack Turvey and unseeded Jack Mitterer (Kent). The first was very close with Turvey taking it 12/10. The second was easier for Turvey and he moved into a commanding position and in touching distance of the final.

However Mitterer has enjoyed a wonderful weekend and didn't want it to end. He managed to turn the tide and levelled the match at 2 all. In the fifth Mitterer continued to control things and led 4-0 and 8-2 before reaching match ball at 10-7. Turvey had one last push and saved 2 match balls before Mitterer did the unthinkable and reached the final as a non seed.
2nd April - Quarters
English Under 11 Championships
Chris Nutley reports

The Girls Quarter Finals saw all the top four seeds progress with only Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire) dropping a game. Ellen overcame a spirited performance from county fellow Yorkshire player Poppy Jaram with a 11/4 8/11 11/1 11/0 victory.

No1 seed and hot favourite Elise Lazarus (Essex) continued her quiet move through the draw with a disciplined 11/3 11/2 11/3 win over Freya Lane (Gloucestershire).

Yorkshire girls squash looks to be healthy at this age group with fellow county teammate and No2 seed Lucy Soulby also reaching the semi's. However Lucy had to dig in against Karina Tyma (Avon) before edging the opener 12/10 and then stepping up a gear to take the following 2 games 11/2 11/5 to seal a 3-0 win.

Semi Final Line Up
1* Elise Lazarus (Essex) v 3/4* Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire)
2* Lucy Soulby (Yorkshire) v 3/4* Laura Neill (Northumbria)

Boys No1 seed Jared Carter (Hampshire) looks to have found his form and defeated James Brick (Kent) in his quarter final. Jared took a 2 game lead before having to quell a mini fight back in the third. However he was a match for James' efforts and ran out an 11/4 11/4 13/11 winner.

The possibility of an all Hampshire final is still there after Jack
Turvey
also made the semi finals after putting a stop to Max Exelby's (Surrey) run 11/8 11/6 5/11 11/7.

3/4 seed Oscar Khoo (Middlesex) joined the Hampshire pair in tomorrow mornings semi finals with an 11/6 11/6 11/2 over the 8yr old Sam Todd (Yorkshire) - son of Mr Pontefract Mick! Oscar was too strong for Sam but with 2 more years left in the Under 11's Sam will definitely be
back.

The player of the day award has to go to Jack Mitterer (Kent) who
followed up his defeat of 5/8 seed William King (Yorkshire) with a
fantastic straight games demolition of 3/4 seed Perry Malik (Sussex). The unseeded Jack doesn't look frightened of anybody and now moves on to face Jack Turvey in his quest for the inaugural English Boys Under 11 title.

Semi Final Line Up
1* Jared Carter (Hampshire) v 3/4* Oscar Khoo (Middlesex)
2* Jack Turvey (Hampshire) v Jack Mitterer (Kent)

2nd April - First Report
English Under 11 Championships
Chris Nutley reports

The Manchester sunshine welcomed the players this morning for the inaugural English Under 11 Championships.

With nearly 100 youngsters descending on the National Squash Centre in what for many was their first major event this was going to be interesting.....and possibly chaotic!

But how wrong could I be - the day got off on time and everybody seemed extremely enthusiastic friendly and very very organised.

The Boys got us underway and the first round went pretty much to plan with 9/16 seed Marcus Tranter (Oxfordshire) the only seed to fall - losing out to Jack Mitterer (Kent) 11/5 11/6 11/7.

There were also good solid wins in the Girls opening round for Nick Taylor's daughter Olivia (Lancashire) and Margot Prow (Middlesex) who both brushed aside 9/16 seeds Emma Bartley (Suffolk) and Elizabeth Wall (Derbyshire) respectively.

Round 2 and things started to get interesting! No1 boys seed Jared Carter (Hampshire) got his campaign underway with a cracking 5 set thriller. After sneaking the first 12/10 his opponent Tom Lammonby (Devon) levelled things at 1-1 and then also fought back to win the 4th and take it into a decider. However it was Jared who managed to keep his nerve and finally see off Tom with a 12/10 9/11 11/5 9/11 11/6 victory.

9/16 seed Sam Sellers (Cheshire) also had to fight hard to stay in the competition with a tough 2/11 11/9 9/11 11/6 11/8 win over Matthew Walsh (Northumbria).

Jack Mitterer continued his good run and with a 3 game
win against Jay Ledger (Hertfordshire).

In the bottom half of the draw 9/16 seed David Collins (D+C) fell to Richard Hill (Cheshire) while 5/8 seed Simon Herbert (Leicestershire) got a shock from Max Exelby (Surrey) who stormed to a fantastic 11/2 11/2 11/6 victory - one to watch later in the competition maybe! Even No2 seed Jack Turvey (Hampshire) didn't have it all his own way and had to come back after losing the first before taking it 9/11 11/8 11/7 11/3
in a very competitive match.

The Girls Round 2 saw the top top seeds Elise Lazarus (Essex), Lucy Soulby (Yorshire), Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire) and Laura Neil (Northumbria) all progress with comfortably with 3-0 victories. Freya Lane (Glouceshire) caused the first upset with a great 11/9 11/8 11/4 win over 5/8 seed Aisha Forster (Yorkshire) and she was joined in Round 3 by Poppie Jaram (Yorkshire) who also dispatched a 5/8 seed - Eve Coxon
(Oxfordshire).

The fantastic all glass court is not in use for matches but has been the centre of attention throughout - since 8.20am it has been in constant use by up to 20 at a time for 3/4 quarter play - great stuff!

A NEW AGE DAWNS
Chris Nutley reports

The inaugural English Under 11 Championships takes place between 2-3 April. Manchester is set to welcome the future stars of the game this weekend as the National Squash Centre awaits nearly 100 of the countries most talented young players.

The event will be run as monrad draws guaranteeing lots of matches and keep all players involved throughout the weekend. This will provide lots of fun, friendly but fierce competition that will ultimately lead to the emergence of two new National Champions.

Elise Lazarus (Essex) heads into the event as red hot favourite for the Girls crown. Lazarus at only 10 years old is currently heading both the U11 and U13 rankings and will be determined to put her disappointment at missing out on the English Under 13 title a few weeks ago behind her and take her first National Title.

Hoping to stop Lazarus will be Lucy Soulby (Yorkshire) who is both No2 seed and No2 in the country at U11 level and will be ready to put up a fight for the inaugural title. Other contenders should include Laura Neill (Northumbria), Ellen Cooper (Yorkshire) and Eve Coxon (Oxfordshire).

The Boys championship looks to be highly competitive but it is possible we will see an all Hampshire final if the seeds run to plan. Hampshire county team mates Jared Carter and Jack Turvey come into the event as No1 and No2 seed respectively. However looking to spoil that Hampshire clash will be 3/4 seeds Oscar Khoo (Middlesex) and Perry Malik (Sussex).

The championships is the culmination of an exciting under 11 season which has seen more formalised under 11 Sanctioned Events, the introduction of Under 11 National and Regional Squads and the addition of Under 11 categories to the national rankings system.

The championship will be staged at the National Squash Centre which has staged many world class events including the 2002 Commonwealth Games, The 2008 World Championships, the British Open and is the long established home of the National Squash Championships.

Play starts at 9.00am on Saturday and the finals are scheduled to start at 3.00pm on Sunday. All spectators will be most welcome free of charge.
