Sunday, Semis and Finals:

Girls Final
[3/4] Emma Bartley (Suffolk) bt [3/4] Asia Harris (Yorks)

Boys Final
[1] Abdallah Eissa (Warks) bt [2] Ben Parlour (York)
             11-4 11-7 11-6 (16m)

Emma Bartley of Suffolk was crown English Under 11 Champion with a tough but well-deserved win over fellow 3/4 seed Asia Harris of Yorkshire. After a tough opener Bartley eased into a 2-0 lead but had to fight hard to prevent a fightback from Harris taking the title 12-10 in the third.

Warwickshire’s No1 seed and hot favourite Abdullah Eissa lived up to his billing as the countries leading under 11 player with a professional display in his final against Ben Parlour of Yorkshire. Eissa never looked in any danger and took the title in style.

Girls Semi Finals
[3/4] Emma Bartley (Suff) bt [1] Layla Johnson (Yorks)
            11-8 11-4 11-13 11-7 (24m)
[3/4] Asia Harris (Yorks) bt [2] Jasmin Tranter (Oxford)
             9-11 12-10 11-9 11-7 (30m)

Boys Semi Finals
[1] Abdallah Eissa (Warks) bt [17/32] Joseph Royle (Yorks)
           11-3 11-2 11-4 (16m)
[2] Ben Parlour (Yorks) bt [9/16] James Campbell-Wynter
  (Dorset)   11-5 11-2 11-4 (13m)

The girls' semi-finals were hotly contested and both ended in upsets to the seedings. Emma Bartley (Suffolk) took out the No1 seed Layla Johnson (Yorkshire) while fellow 3/4 seed Asia Harris (Yorkshire) defeated No2 seed Jasmin Tranter of Oxfordshire), both in 4 games.

Bartley always looked to have the edge over Johnson while Harris had to show her mental strength after falling behind in her match with Tranter before edging a tough and extremely close match.

The boys' semi-finals were more straight forward and went to seed. Favourite Abdallah Eissa of Warwickshire stamped his authority on the championship and put a stop to Joseph Royles’s (Yorkshire) great run with a solid 3-0 performance.

In the final Eissa now faces No2 seed Ben Parlour (Yorkshire) who quickly extinguished James Campbell-Wynters (Dorset) resistance, again taking it in 3.

Saturday, Day ONE

The boys draw had plenty of shocks today as many of the top seeds fell. Unseeded Arhan Chandra knocked out the 3/4 seed Nero Harms with an amazing 5 setter, the first game being took 16-14 by Chandra.

His run was shortly over in the next round as he fell to 17/32 Joseph Royle with another 5 set match, this time with the first game score 17-15 in Royles favour. Royle then continued his run with a quarter final victory over 5/8 seed Rory Richmond 11-6 to Royle in the 5th.

He is now faced with a semi final against the top seed Abdalla Eissa who has cruised through the earlier stages with three 3-0 victories.

Other shocks saw 9/16 Harry Bloomfield knock out 3/4 Hugo Andersson with a 3-0 victory in Round 3 whilst the other 9/16 from the same quarter James Campbell Wynter defeated 5/8 Tom Miller 3-1.

Both 9/16’s then faced each other with Campbell-Wynter taking it 12-10 in the 4th, he now comes up against the second seed Ben Parlour who took a 3-0 victory over 9/16 Alex Mullis who found himself in the quarters after a defeat over 5/8 Heston Malik.

Quarter Final Results:
[1] Abdallah Eissa bt [9/16] Yusuf Sheikh
           15-13 11-3 11-4 (25m)
[17/32] Joseph Royle bt [5/8] Rory Richmond
           12-14 11-4 9-11 11-9 11-6 (33m)
[9/16] James Campbell-Wynter bt [9/16] Harry Bloomfield
           11-4 8-11 11-6 12-10 (20m)
[2] Ben Parlour bt [9/16] Alex Mullis
            11-9 11-7 11-6 (25m)

No surprises in the Girls draw as all top 8 seeds made it safely into the Quarters, each of them

winning their second round matches with a 3-0 scorline. The Quarters were also quite

straightforward with the top seeds all progressing through to the semi’s. Top seed Layla Johnson got

through a late fightback from Amy Campbell-Wynter which she eventually took 14-12 to seal the win. Lauren Hall gave Emma Bartley a tough start but Bartley was strong enough to take the first 11-9 and then powered on to take the match which see’s her face the top seed in the semi finals tomorrow.

Amelie Howarth had a great start against Asia Harris as she took the first game 11-4, Harris took the second quite comfortably to even the scores but the next two games were a close affair with Harris coming out on top in each 11-8, 11-8 to set up a semi final with the second seed Jasmine Tranter.

Quarter Final Results:
[1] Layla Johnson bt [5/8] Amy Campbell-Wynter
            11-4 11-4 14-12 (16m)
[3/4] Emma Bartley bt [5/8] Lauren Hall
            11-9 11-5 11-2 (14m)
[3/4] Asia Harris bt [5/8] Amelie Howarth
            4-11 11-3 11-8 11-8 (25m)
[2] Jasmine Tranter bt [5/8] Lexie Ogram
            11-4 11-0 11-2 (12m)

New Champions Assured in English Under11s

The most promising under-11 squash players in the country head to Sheffield this weekend for the fifth staging of the England Squash & Racketball U11 Championships.

New champions are guaranteed as both last year’s winners, Torrie Malik (Sussex) and Sam Osborne-Wlyde (Worcestershire), have moved up an age group.

It promises to be a highly competitive and exciting weekend, with almost all of the top 20 nationally-ranked players participating and well over 20 counties represented.

For many this will be their first experience of national level competition, while for others thoughts will be focused solely on becoming English champion.

In 2014 Yorkshire’s Layla Johnson finished fifth, but this time she heads the girls’ seedings as she bids for her first national title.

However, she faces a tough draw, with no.2 seed Jasmine Tranter (Oxfordshire), who this week replaced Johnson as no.1 in the U11 rankings, her expected opponent in Sunday’s final.

Abdulla Eissa, of Warwickshire, is favourite for the boys’ title, with local hope Ben Parlour the no.2 seed and Suffolk pair Hugo Anderson and Nero Harms completing the top four seedings.

Hallamshire, one of the country’s leading squash clubs and home to triple world champion Nick Matthew, hosts the championships, with play starting at 9am tomorrow morning and the finals scheduled for 2pm on Sunday.

Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge throughout the weekend and witness the stars of the future compete for the chance to become English U11 champion.
