10-May, Finals:
Egyptian Double in Cairo
The
first professional tournament to be held in Egypt after the popular
uprising earlier in the year saw two home players take the titles.
Amr Khaled Khalifa and Heba El Torky both took 59
minutes to seal their victories, but while unseeded Khalifa, the
world junior champion, beat second seed Omar Abdel Aziz in straight
games, top seed El Torky needed all five games to see of
fourth-seeded South African Siyoli Waters.
For
Khalifa the win marks his seventh victory in eight PSA finals, all
in the last two years, but his first on home soil, while El Torky
maintained her unbeaten record in WISPA finals as she collected her
fourth title.
"It's
been a great and tough tournament from the start, I've played with
all junior champions, Nouran Gohar, my sister Nouran and Emily.
"Although I knew my sister could have done more but she was soo
tired from many many trials for the World Juniors and the nationals
and the African's u19 that she just won all in one month!!
"My final against Siyoli ... she played really well ... I knew I had
to work hard to get it back and focus from the beginning of the 4th
and 5th games.
"I would like to thank my parents, Dudy, cousins, coaches, and all
my friends and squash players who support me. Mr. Sayed El Kamash
really did a great job to organise this tournament I thank him sooo
much for his support and for organising more tournaments in Egypt."
|
"I knew that this was going to be a
tough match against Heba. I wanted to be play a game that displayed
patience, but still attacking her when opportunity came.
"The first three games were close, some long tough rallies, but
happy to be in the lead. In the last two games, I let her get ahead
of me too quickly, which is not good against her.
"She played well and I had a good tournament in Egypt. I look
forward to the qualifications for Hurghada tournament.
"It's good that Egypt is back hosting tournaments. Thanks to the
organisers for their hard work."

Siyoli Spoils Egyptian Party In Cairo
South African Siyoli Waters put paid to all-Egyptian finals in the
Egyptian Circuit No1 after upsetting second seed Kanzy El-Dafrawy in
the women's semi-finals at the Shooting Club in Cairo.
After dropping the first game, the fourth seed from Cape Town
survived a tie-break second game before going on to claim an
impressive 7-11, 13-11, 11-3, 4-11, 11-7 victory over El-Dafrawy,
the world No41 from Cairo.
Now in the second WISPA final of her career – and her second of the
year – world No64 Waters will face favourite Heba El Torky, the
world No36 from Alexandria.
El Torky also had to come back from a game down to beat England's
third seed Emily Whitlock, the 17-year-old recently-crowned European
junior champion, 8-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-3.
The 20-year-old Egyptian is celebrating her fourth WISPA final – and
will be looking to extend her unbeaten record in finals to date.
Unseeded Amr Khaled Khalifa will face second seed Omar Abdel Aziz in
the final of the men's event after the Egyptian pair survived
contrasting semi-finals.
Khalifa, the reigning world junior champion from Cairo, needed 54
minutes to overcome Giza-based 23-year-old Omar Abdel Meguid, also
unseeded, 6-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-2.
The 18-year-old is celebrating the eighth PSA final appearance of
his career – but, surprisingly perhaps, his first on home soil.
Aziz, the 27-year-old world No42, made it into the final after just
a few points into the second game of the other semi when his Italian
opponent Amr Swelim retired injured with the score at 11-2, 1-3.
The brief victory takes Aziz into his 10th PSA final.

Men's Seeds Suffer In Cairo
Omar Abdel Aziz became the lone men's seed to make it through to the
last four of the Egyptian Circuit No1 after beating fellow Egyptian
Wael Farag in the quarter-finals at the Shooting Club in Cairo.
The 27-year-old second seed from Cairo despatched 21-year-old Farag
11-5, 11-6, 11-3 in just 28 minutes – and will now face Amr Swelim
for a place in the final.
The Cairo-born Italian ousted Egyptian qualifier Mohamed Abouelghar
11-8, 14-12, 11-5.
But Omar Abdel Meguid pulled off the biggest upset when he overcame
favourite Karim Abdel Gawad 13-11, 5-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 in a
113-minute marathon.
Unseeded Meguid, ranked more than 60 places lower than his opponent,
now takes on fellow countryman Amr Khaled Khalifa.
Unseeded Khalifa, the reigning World Junior Champion, stunned fourth
seed Andrew Wagih 11-6, 11-7, 11-8.
Order was restored in the women's event when the four top seeds
survived the quarter-finals in straightforward style.
Favourite Heba El Torky faced her sister Nouran El Torky for the
second time on the WISPA Tour – but again kept her younger sibling
at bay with a 10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 victory.
The 20-year-old from Alexandria now faces England's newly-crowned
European Junior champion Emily Whitlock after the 17-year-old third
seed defeated 18-year-old Egyptian Salma Hany 11-9, 11-8, 11-3.
