06-Sep, Final:
[7] Rafael Alarcon (Bra) bt [4] Jorge Ferreira (Mex)
11-9,
8-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-7 (79m)
The resurgent Rafael Alarcon, at 32 years of age, collected his
third PSA title of the year as he came from 2-1 down to beat
Mexico's Jorge Ferreira to claim the Ecuador Open title in Quito.
The win culminated a tremendous run form Alarcon as he defeated the
second, third and fourth seeds in succession to claim his 13th
career title.
Alarcon
triumphs through mental strength
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
The Ecuador Squash Open final was vibrant; the Brazilian Rafael
Alarcon won against the Mexican Ferreira who disputed for the second
time in a row the final of this tournament.
Five games were needed to define this match that left the audience
out of breath; they enjoyed a remarkable squash level in the central
court of the Ecuador Squash Open. Alarcon put all his mental
strength to win. The combination of his conviction and clarity
helped him to develop a consistent strategy that allowed him to
become the champion of the tournament.
Alarcon won the first game playing with consistency and
anticipation, precise drop shots and long rallies. The second and
third games were won by the Mexican who changed his strategy
completely to a slow and deep rhythm; this eventually wore out the
32 year old Brazilian.
The fourth game, the match seemed to be in favour of the Mexican,
yet Alarcon tied the match and forced a tie break. Alarcon played
consistently and forced an error from the Mexican and played a
killer drop shot that granted him the fourth game.
The fifth and final game was all about the mental strength; this is
where Alarcon made the difference. He played precisely, wore out his
opponent, rescued every single ball and made continuous winning
shots.
This Brazilians’ effort granted him the necessary points to become
champion against a outstanding Mexican player who won the love of
the Ecuadorians and mentioned that he dedicated this match to his
mascot; a Rottweiler that passed away last month. |
05-Sep, Semis:
Alarcon & Ferreira make Quito final
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
With a paused and patient game, outstanding easiness to reach the
ball and generate winning shots; the Mexican Jorge Ferriera reached
his second consecutive final of the Ecuador Squash Open.
Nevertheless,
the 18 year old Argentinean Leandro Romilgio, in only his 5th
tournament in the tour showed he has great talent for Latin America.
Romiglio was faithful to his varied game, measured attack but was
outcome by the experience of the 26 year old Mexican, who managed to
add up the necessary points by changing the rhythm, pressuring each
side of the court and forcing the ball to the front.
Ferreira
will meet Rafael Alarcon in the final, after the veteran
Brazilian beat Mexico's third seed Eric Galvez.
A strategic, deep, long and precise match characterized by constant
rhythm changes gave Alarcon the lead to his dreamed final in
Ecuador, after tiring Galvez with his patience. The first game was
highly technical with a deep game, persistent straight shots that
forced the Mexicans mistakes.
The
second game was filled with constant boasts that destroyed Galvez’s
legs and although he attempted continuously to play winning shots,
they weren’t translated into points.
The Brazilian played secure and confident of his triumph, and today
he became a finalist of the Ecuador Squash Open.

Upsets abound in Quito quarters
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
It was a day of shocks at the Quito Tennis Club, as seeds fell by
the wayside in the Ecuador Open quarter-finals.
Local
wildcard Mateo Guarderas, who benefited from a walkover against top
seed Borja Golan to reach the quarters, fell in straight games to
Argentinean qualifier Leandro Romiglio who claims an
unexpected semi-final spot.
Romiglio now faces Mexico's Jorge Ferreira for a place in the
final after fourth seed Ferreira recovered from losing the first
game to beat Robin Clarke in four.
In the bottom half of the draw veteran Brazilian Rafael Alarcon,
seeded seven, produced a stunning upset to oust Colombia's second
seed Miguel Angel Rodriguez in straight games.
Alarcon now meets third seed Eric Galvez who beat undeeded Bernardo

One:
Golan out as Romiglio surprises
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports
Despite
the will to obtain his recovery, after the Sunday's epic match in
Bogota, Spain's Borja Golan couldn’t recover 100% and had to
retire from today’s match against the wild card, the Ecuadorian
Mateo Guarderas.
Golan felt his knee was still very unstable, and despite the effort
he put in to play he didn’t feel confident to continue. To the
audience's dismay he decided to retire. On the other hand, the first
round of the main draw was also very rewarding for the Argentinean
Leandro Romiglio who advanced to the next round to meet
Guarderas.
Surpisingly welshman Rob Sutherland retired in the third game
of the match giving the match to Romiglio who showed himself
confident in the first two games, playing with easiness and stamina.
A surprised Sutherland ran out of air and couldn’t find his game.
Romiglio is the grand revelation of the Ecuador Squash Open.
An emotive 60 minute match, between the Mexican Cesar Salazar
and the Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez. It was a tight
match, characterized by consecutive unforced errors in the first two
games. As the match advanced the tribune’s emotions began to rise
with a spectacular show of endurance and technique, followed by
deception shots and the picking up impossible shots. In the end, the
Colombian was more precise and is in search of his second title of
the Ecuador Squash Open.
Experience combined with constant precision in the back of the
court, control and accuracy to attack to the front made the Mexican
Eric Tepoz seem unsecure and erratic against the Brazilian
Rafael Alarcon. Alarcon controlled the match from the beginning
until the end; Tepoz couldn’t play his long rally matches in search
of his opponent’s mistakes. The Brazilians strategy was clear and
determining, the final score was 3-0.
Eric Galvez's characteristic velocity didn’t allow the
Colombian Federico Torres to play his winning game. Although
the Colombian played constantly to the back Galvez was always there
and won the match by 3-0.
More Mexican success as Jorge Ferreira imposed his experience
and consistency after defeating his 17 year old compatriot, Miled
Zarazua, who nonetheless showed that as soon as he can control
the key moments in the match he will begin to climb in the PSA
ranking.
Strategic
and secure, Canadian Robin Clarke showed his increasing his
level against South African Regardt Schonborn, who couldn’t
adjust to the court and the bounciness of the ball.
After a vibrant five games match, the Colombian Bernardo Samper
built a difficult triumph against the intelligent Malaysian
Nafiizwan Adnan who played a deep game, managed the rhythms,
slowed the match and although he was constantly pressured, he almost
reversed the match to his favour. Yet Samper played more winning
shots and despite needing six match balls he closed the match and
passed to the next round of the Ecuador Squash Open. |

02-Sep,
Qualifying Finals:
Romiglio and Zararua
enter the main draw
As expected the 18 year old Argentinean Romilgio and the 17 year old
Mexican Zarazua entered the main draw today accompanied by the
Mexican Tepoz and the Colombian Torres.
Romiglio played with clarity and inspiration leaving Miranda with no
opportunities. Miranda couldn’t find his way through the court and
lost by 3-0. Romilgio is one of the younf promises of the continent.
The young Mexican Zarazua was a grown up in court after defeating
his compatriot Martinez, who couldn’t counter attack the numerous
winning shots that Miled proposed. In the other two matches, the
Ecuadorians hope vanished. Sebastian Chacon lost against the solid
and consistent Mexican Eric Tepoz, who entered the main draw for the
second time is just one week; Bogota and Quito. The Colombian
Rodrigo Torres was very superior compared to the Ecuadorian Pablo
Buitron and made his way to the main draw with no problems.
The tournament was officially inaugurated tonight after a
presentation of the Ecuadorian folklore. Tomorrow the main draw will
begin.
01-Sep:
Two Ecuadorians advance
to qualifying finals
Ecuadorians Sebastian Chacon and Pablo Buitron will
have the opportunity tomorrow to play for two places in the main
draw, after tonight’s matches the final round of the qualy round is
set with the participation of three Mexicans, two Argentineans and
one Colombian.
Two classic matches will be played tomorrow between the Argentineans
and Mexicans who look for two places in the main draw. Milled
Zarazua will try to surprise Salvador Martinez and
Leandro Romiglio will try to defeat Gonzalo Miranda. The
matches outcomes are reserved.
On the top of the draw the favourite player to advance is the
Colombian Rodrigo Torres who defeated the Welsh Binns. The
following match will be between the Mexican Eric Tepoz and
the Ecuadorian Chacon, the Mexican wishes to equal the results he
obtained in Bogota last week, where he entered the main draw.
01-Sep:
Borja recovers
The qualifying draw of
the Ecuador Squash Open in Quito started at noon today with only one
match between the Colombian Rodrigo Torres and the Ecuadorian
Francis Guarderas
Torres won by 3-0 and the final eight games for tomorrow afternoon
are set. These matches will define the final four places that will
enter the main draw on Wednesday.
The most optioned players to obtain a place in the main draw are the
Colombian Rodrigo Torres, Argentinean Gonzalo Miranda and the
Mexicans Eric Tepoz and Salvador Martinez. The possible surprises
are the Argentinean Romiglio and the young Mexican Zarazua.
The good news is that top seed Borja Golan has fully recovered from
the injury he sustained in the final of the Colombian Open, filling
the organization committee with enthusiasm; the lamentable
retirement of the Spanish in the tie break of the fifth game in the
Colombian final, made everybody think Golan wasn’t going to be able
to play the Ecuadorian tournament. He is fully recovered and he will
definitely be a protagonist in this tournament as well.
