Saffery wins Delaware!
Ramon Chan-a-Sue reports
Deon Saffery capped a remarkable weekend of squash where she
upended the #4,#1 and today the #6 seed Samantha Cornett of
Canada to win the 2011 CSC Delaware State Open. This is Saffery’s
second WISPA title and denied Cornett her first in her first final.
After
playing some brilliant squash the past week, Cornett’s game seem to
be a bundle of errors and these along with some typical Saffery
dominating play did not allow Cornett a chance to get back into the
match. Only in the third game did it seem as Cornett would mount a
challenge, but once again an unforced error produced the win for
Saffery after saving two balls.
These two are sure to meet in the near future, and it will
definitely be closer as they both head up in the rankings after a
great weekend for both. |

Semi Final Day in Delaware!
Ramon Chan-a-Sue reports
The 2011 CSC Delaware Open reached the semi final stage with a
number of players upsetting the seedings, and semi final day was no
different.
The first match of the night saw Samantha Cornett of Canada playing
the number three seeded Thaisa Serafini of Brazil. Cornett coming
off her upset win of the number two seed and looking to get to her
first WISPA final.
Her opponent was not going to make it easy for her, and that was
evident by the twenty minute first game which was claimed in a
tiebreaker on a Cornett volley drop. Both players came out hitting
tight drives while moving in and out of offense, not allowing the
other to gain any distance in the score. However it was Cornett who
was constantly challenging Serafini at the front of the court which
paid dividends as the match wore on.
The second game saw the same game with the only difference being the
odd unforced error separating the two players, which Cornett won
again in a tiebreaker. In the third Serafini made one last stand,
however Cornett was not to be denied and will now attempt to win her
first title.
The second semi final of the evening between the other giant killer
of the tournament, Deon Saffery and Sina Wall of Germany added even
more drama to the nights activities with both players giving it
their all.
Wall claimed the first game hitting tighter length and putting away
any loose offerings from Saffery. However in the second Saffery
started to attack the front court a bit more there by opening up
opportunities to twist and turn her opponent and helping her tie up
the match at one all. In the third Saffery stormed out to a 4-0 lead
only to have Wall claw her way back to 5-5 all but then saw Wall
make a few unforced errors to decide the game in Saffery’s favor.
While it looked like it might be over in the fourth when Saffery
once again squandered a 6-3 lead as she began to tired a bit and
allowed Wall to close out the game 11-6. So the fifth game for all
the marbles and it was tight from the beginning to the end with Wall
making unforced errors and Saffery seeming to find another wind
allowing her to close out the match and move on to Sunday’s final.
So Super Bowl Sunday will be super for one of these girls as they go
for their first WISPA title. Canada vs Wales….sounds like a rugby
match .
UPSET FRIDAY in Delaware!
While the first round of the CSC Delaware State Open went through to
form, the quarter finals was exactly the opposite with two upsets.
None bigger than that of Samantha Cornett of Canada, who gave
herself a wonderful birthday gift by upsetting the number two seed
Leonie Holt of England in three straight games.
The second upset of the evening was caused by Deon Saffery of
Wales who took out Laura Pomportes of France in three games.
Saffery’s length was just too good for a mistake prone Pomportes.
The other two top seeds advanced with relative ease. Top seed
Sina Wall will face Saffery in one semi-final while Cornett will
meet the number three seed Thaisa Serafini of Brazil who
pushed back a stiff challenge of kiwi Larissa Stephenson.
