NEW COURTS IN ARGENTINA

Esteban Casarino reports

The city of Resistencia on the northern Argentinean province of Chaco is known as the 'city of sculptures', thanks to a great artistic tradition, but now it will be known among the squash lovers of the region, thanks to the great squash complex recently opened at the “Regatas Club de Resistencia” (Resistencia Rowing club).

The day:

Wednesday the 8th was an unforgettable day for the South American squash. The ceremony was led by Daniel San Martin followed by the words of the club’s authority and Juan Carlos Tynkiw, who together with Pedro Rascon are the main investor of this new complex.

The players:

After a long battery of fireworks the opening match took place, between the four time Pan American champion and former nº 18 in the world Federico Uzandizaga from Argentina and the current nº 92 in the world and bronze medalist in the South American games, Esteban Casarino from Paraguay.
After the game, both players shared the court for a game with the local juniors Gonzalo Gallardo and Nicolas Caballero from Paraguay respectively.

The courts:

“From the beginning the project had to be different and we tried to use modern day technologies,” said Juan Carlos Tynkiw. The walls are made with cement panels attached to a metal structure and the floor is a synthetic carpet, very different from the brick walls and wooden floor usually used in Latin America.

The complex has the first ever doubles court built in South America, and only one of the very few in Latin America. Despite doubles being very popular among social players on singles courts, this will bring the chance to have doubles events on a specific court for that purpose.

“Honestly I would like to congratulate all the people from Chaco, and thank them very much for making me part of such an important occasion. I’m very proud and happy to take part in such a nice and happy moment for the squash.

“It is a historical moment for squash in Chaco, Argentina and South America. Personally I’m extremely proud to be able to participate in such an important occasion. My admiration and best wishes for those responsible for such a great Project.”
