Colwyn Classic 2013
26-29 Nov, LeSport, Rhos-on-Sea, $5k
29-Nov, Finals:
Emily claims another home crown

An eagerly anticipated match between the top two seeds, especially due to how dominant Czech second seed Lucie Fialova  had been on her way to the final.

On the night Emily Whitlock, the LeSport-based top seed,  had the advantage however, dominating the rallies with some excellent volleying and movement and making few unforced errors to win the match comfortably 3-0.

Speaking after the match Emily explained the risks and pressure of playing on the WSA Tour:

"Playing a $5K event with my current average is a bit of a risk because the points I get for winning are well below it. But because I was injured for a month I needed matches to get back on track.

"So I am really pleased with my performance especially as Lucie has been playing really well all week."

The win sees Emily retain her Colwyn Classic title, moving her career WSA tally to seven,

In the men's PSA Closed Satellite event, James Earles won a see-saw five-game final against Adam Murrils. Adam won the first game with relative ease, but the second saw James come out with renewed vigour.

The boys were moving each other all over the court, but James had the accuracy to put the ball away, with Adam making too many unforced errors.

Having got back on level pegging, James forged ahead 2-1. But then Adam fought his way back to take the fourth. So the crowd were treated to a fifth game and it did not disappoint.

Remarkable rallies with fantastic retrieving; inch perfect drops and plenty of variety.

Entertainment value

The spectators were not only treated to great squash, but entertaining refereeing which was nearly as entertaining as the matches. Quotes like “just a let” and “more effort needed” really got the crowd involved in the match, whilst giving the players the chance for a witty response, or a moan depending on how they were getting on.

The Club is preparing to do a WSA $10K event at the end of July 2014 so we are really grateful to the Squashsite crew for their fantastic coverage.

We have heard from squash enthusiasts all over the world who have been able to keep up to date with what’s happening in our small seaside town. It is great for the Bay of Colwyn Town Council to know that Colwyn has been opened up to a global audience and the Mayor Steve Perry is keen for us to put forward for funding for next year’s event.

Colwyn Comments

Many of the spectators were commenting on the quality of the squash, considering it is only a $5k tournament - this maybe a sign of the drought of events for these WSA players, which means even $5k events are full of exciting, talented females.

Hopefully more clubs in the UK may consider putting one of these smaller events on. At Le Sport we raise part of the prize-fund by selling the players to members and then just before the first round, we do a draw to see which member gets which player. Not only does this create more interest in supporting all of the girls, but if your player wins the event, you win a prize.

In our final tonight Emily was "bought" by Gaz Edwards - squash enthusiast, but now a gym member and Lucie was drawn out to Rob Kenwell - another gym member, probably never played squash in his life! Its good how even our gym members are keen to support the squash at the club.

Top seeds into Colwyn Bay final

Home favourite Emily Whitlock will face second seed Lucie Fialova in the final of the WSA $4k Colwyn Classic at LeSport ...

Emily Whitlock bt Nouran El Torky 3-0

The score line says three-nil, but this doesn’t do justice to Nouran who played some brilliant squash. It was a fantastic match – graet shots and amazing movement around the court.

Emily took the first, despite a nervy start, but the second game saw Nouran have Emily all over the court. At 9-6 down, the home supporters must have thought their player was in difficulty, but after winning a monumental rally , Emily took the game in one hand.

But Nouran still came out in third producing some amazing straight drives and flicks to have Em twisting and turning. But it was Em’s variety of shot and accuracy on some drops helped her to take the match with an 11-7 third game.

Considering this is only a $5k event, the standard of squash was excellent and it is a shame that Nouran produced a great performance to only take the points of a losing semi-finalist – doesn’t seem quite fair somehow!

Lucie Fialova by Olga Ertlova 3-0

A tight 3-0 with some excellent long rallies throughout the match Once again, the 3 nil score line does not reflect how evenly matched the players were. The first game was exceptionally close, with both girls mainly playing to the back of the court. It was only when Olga started adding a bit of variety that she was able to move ahead. Lucie, however, soacked everything up and was able to fight back with her devastating drives.

The second was a bit one way traffic, with lucie taking it !!-2, but Olga once again came back in the third. Lucie proved to strong for her on the night and took the match in 3. The girls stopped for few lets/stroke appeals as they knew they would get very little from ref Robert Forde. "Play the ball" is the orderof the day and it is definitely making for better matches.

Tough Love

The approach of the refs has been “play the ball”, with few easy/soft lets.

This has made for a much better event as the matches are not littered with futile let/stroke appeals.

Sometimes the decisions have seemed harsh, but the reffing has been consistent for all players and so the spectators are treated to continuous squash and not the stop/start squash that is becoming more and more prevalent in professional tournaments.

The spectators have found it much more enjoyable.

 Quarters in Colwyn Bay

Olga Ertalova v Tamika Saxby

Olga Ertalova won 3-2 in a tight 83 minute match .An epic encounter that either opponent could have won, with both players having several match balls to clinch the tie.

Both players were very competitive and gave the ref no mercy questioning decisions and pushing each other out the way to get to the ball. It was fantastic to watch and has set a great standard for the rest of the tournament..

Lucie Fialova v Chloe Mesic

Lucie Fialova won 3-0. Lucie “bossed” the first game winning it very quickly; however Chloe started to get her game going in the second and made the last two games very competitive.

Chloe made it very difficult with some excellent retrieving, but Lucie was too dominant in the middle for her to get a game.

Emily Whitlock v Victoria Temple-Murray

Both former British U19 Champions and England Junior team mates, these two players have come up the ranks together. It was Emily tonight who played exceptional squash to take the match 3-0.

Interesting to see two players who use lob serves effectively, but Emily’s retrieving skills were too much on the night.

Nouran El Torky v Lotte Eriksen

After three close first games it was the Egyptian - celebrating her birthday today - who took the fourth comfortably to create the only upset of the day.

Brief mention for two of our members, Robert Forde (well known in squash circles) and Gordon Riding.

These two ALWAYS support the events at Le Sport, putting money up for the prize fund. Without their continuous help these events wouldn’t run – simple as that. We are incredibly lucky to have members who support the squash at the club and we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

WSA heads for Colwyn Bay

The LeSport Club in Rhos-on-Sea hosts another tournament, this time a full-blown WSA $5k event (and a PSA Closed Satellite too), once again with invaluable support from the Bay of Colwyn Town Council.

Local favourite Emily Whitlock is top seeds, with Czech stars Lucie Fialova and Olga Ertlova second and third in the rankings.
