Double Dot Media CBHS Open 2013
12-15 Sep, Christchurch, New Zealand, $5k
Coll comeback beats Corren to CBHS title

A large crowd packed the Burnside courts to watch local favourite and 2nd seed Paul Coll take on PSA Tour veteran Mike Corren.

The first game began with Corren dominating  most of the exchanges, he took an early lead 5/1 and never really looked back taking the first game with relative ease, the local supporters a bit stunned.

The second game was a closer affair, both players making more errors than they would have liked, Corren had the early advantage but Coll clawed his way back to 9/9, the next two points however were crucial and both went Corren's way, taking the game 11/9.

Corren now two games up, the third game seemed to be going in a similar fashion Corren slightly ahead with Coll trying to narrow the gap. At 10/8 Corren had two match balls and the crowd were on the edge of the seats, could Coll survive the next 2 points?

Answer them he did, fist pumping as he closed the gap to 10/10, Coll then took the advantage 12/11 and when Corren attempted a flashy reverse boast Coll just got it and played a tight forehand drop, Corren tried to get past but bumped his opponent, a no let, referee determining that the drop was a winner.

In the fourth Corren tried to reassert his earlier dominance but Coll played patiently, tightening his game up and Coll took the game 11/9, a fifth set decider was required. The 5th game started off evenly but a monster rally at 4-2 with Coll working Corren all over the court was won by Coll and this seemed to spell the beginning of the end for Corren. Coll hit a couple of lovely backhand cross-court nicks to finish off points and opened up a sizeable lead

At 10-5 Coll had his first match ball, he served at Corren who's backhand shot just went out, first NZ PSA victory to Coll, he was delighted as were the local crowd.

14-Sep, Semis:
Top seeds stop Scottish run

It will be the top two seeds who contest the Double Dot Media BHS Open in Christchurch, after Mike Corren and Paul Coll both beat Scottish opponents in today's semi-finals ...

Mike Corren seemed to dominant the exchanges in the opening two games against Kevin Moran, the games were tight but Corren had the edge and went up 2/0.

Moran then came back in determined fashion to hit some nice winners in the 3rd game which caught Corren out of position, were we perhaps in for a comeback from the Scot?

Corren had other ideas and really upped the tempo in the 4th, he powered away and finished off the match 11/3 in the fourth.

Paul Coll started strongly in his match against Douglas Kempsell, tight length allowed him to control the game but Kempsell was competing until 4/2 in the first.

Kempsell appeared to twist his knee badly and took time to recover, in fact at that point it appeared he might exit the game through injury.

But the determined Scot opted to continue on, he challenged Coll throughout the next three games but it seemed the slight injury had taken the edge from his game and Coll's victory was comfortable in the end.

14-Sep, Quarters:
Normal order restored in Quarters

No surprises in the quarterfinals - after last nights drama the quarterfinals were completed with no real upsets.

Top seed Mike Corren was dominant in his first two games against Kashif Shuja and looked to have a semi-final berth booked easily but Shuja fought back and took the 3rd in a very close game. Corren however was too strong in the 4th and took the match.

Kevin Moran played accurate error-free squash in the first two games forcing errors from his opponent Lance Beddoes. Moran could have had the match in the 3rd with two match balls but could not convert them, Beddoes finished off this tight game with the next 2 points, Moran clearly upset by a ball that looked out but was not called at 10 all. Moran did not let this trouble him too much and came back strongly to close out the match, taking the 4th with relative ease.

Paul Coll proved too strong for Ben Grindrod taking the first game comfortably 11/4. But it wasn't going to be all plain sailing with Grindrod showing superb fighting qualities to build up a good lead 9/5 in the second. Coll then showed his class, tightened his game up and clawed his way back to take the game 12/10. Coll looked in control of the 3rd to take a 10-7 lead but it took him the three match balls to finally claim victory 11/9.

After his marathon game last night Douglas Kempsell was a bit slow starting and surrendered an early 5/1 lead in his first game against Jaakko Vähämaa. He eventually got into his work and played some great shots to close out the first game 11/7. Kempsell dominated the next 2 games and booked the last spot in the semis, 2 Scots in the semi-finals.

13-Sep, Round One:
Seeds battle in the bottom half

The evening session began with no alarms, Mike Corren the top seed was up first and beat Adrian Leanza in 3 straight games. On the other court Kashif Shuja and Matias Tuomi had a real tussle in the opening two games before the experience of Kashif saw him take the final two games in comfortable fashion.

Kevin Moran, the 4th seed, comfortably won his match against Andrew Ellis to progress through to the quarters. Lance Beddoes and Paul Rawden had a long and demanding first game, through Lance was getting on top in the 2nd and 3rd games before Pablo was forced to retire with a leg injury.

Jaakko Vähämaa played consistent squash to beat Wojtek Nowisz in 3 tight games to reach the quarters after coming through qualifying. Possibly the game of the night saw some fantastic squash as Douglas Kempsell beat 3rd seed James Huang it what was a thrilling match lasting 92 minutes, 2 Scots in the quarters.

Ben Grindrod had a tough battle and finally prevailed in five against Andrew Fraser, another qualifier makes the quarters.

The grand finale of the night was the match up between 2nd seed and local favourite Paul Coll and Thoboki Mohohio of South Africa, this was always destined to be an entertaining match and so it proved.

Nervous locals were on the edge of their seats as the possibility of an upset loss loomed, but Coll finally came through with an 11/7 scoreline in the 5th.
