Hoover Laursen and Jamie Macaulay report
Quarter-finals:
Lewis Walters bt Lyall Paterson 9/11, 11/8, 11/8, 11/4 (51m)
The no one seeded Walters managed to scrape past the fiesty Paterson
in an epic four game battle. The two warriors matched each other
point for point throughout the first game and arrived at 9all with
horns still locked. Lyall then managed to pull out an enormous two
ralleys to take the first game much to the delight of the vocal
crowd.
The second started as the first had finished and Paterson shot to a
4-1 lead. Then came the burst from Walters that the enthusiastic
observers had been expecting. From 4-1 down Lyalls Notingham nemasis
rattled of 7 of the next 8 points to lead the second game 8/5.
Despite a resolute fightback from the Scottish Sorcerer to go to 8
all Lewis closed out the game 11/8.
From the start of the third game the wily Walters was on top and
although the 3rd was a tight 11/8 he always appeared in control. He
went on to take the 4th game 11/4 to rapturous applaus.
Jamie Macaulay bt Paul Mathison 11/7, 11/5, 11/3 (12m)
The 7th seeded Macaulay produced the first upset of the day as he
defeated the Italian in a mind boggalinging quick 12 minute match.
Although the fourth seeded Mathison ran hard he was perminantly on
the back foot and Macaulay powered through to the Semi Finals.
Jonas Laursen bt Maxim LeClair 11/8, 11/9, 8/11, 11/9 (62m)
The biggest upset of the round came when Jonas Laursen took out 2nd
seed Maxim Leclair in four tight games. The Dangerous Dane had a
loud local support and it seemed to fire him up from the word go.
With fist pumps flying from 1/0 in the first game, Laursen spanked
the ball around like a racoon in season. He took the first and
second games with identical forehand straight nicks and LeClair
seemed unable to prevent the adoped 'Chicago Black Hawk' from
soaring to victory.
To his immense credit Leclair came out in the 3rd game with a
renewed purpose and stole the show taking the game 11/8. LeClair's
resistance was then proven futile as the tournament organised closed
out the match 11/9......and the crowd went wild.
Juan Pablo bt Maxime Blouin 12/14, 11/8, 2/11, 11/5, 11/7 (58m)
Unfortunately I didn't get to see this match but both players seemed
pretty goosed at the end.
Semi-Finals:
Lewis Walters - Juan Pablo Roche 11/3, 11/6, 11/8 (31m)
Juan looked tired from his 5 set match in the morning and as a
result, Lewis continually moved him from corner to corner with
devastating effect. Both players entertained the crowd with
impressive winners, however it was Walters who controlled the match
from the first to the last point.
Jamie Macaulay - Jonas Laursen 11/6, 11/8, 11/6 (36m)
An entertaining match from two shot makers, with the slightly
fresher Macaulay coming out on top. The home favourite made inspired
starts to each game, however was soon closed down by Macaulay who
proved too solid. A great match for the home crowds, with the hero
Laursen who made his first ever PSA semi-final giving his all, but
coming up a little short. Macaulay goes into his first ever PSA
final playing well and full of confidence and should make for an
exciting final against the world number 112.
