Guyana take team titles
Both the Boy’s and Girls finals were keenly contested ties
between the defending champions Guyana, who played like true
champions to bring home gold once again.
The girl’s final finished as expected with Guyana winning
three matches to two by winning the U-17, U-15 and U-13 age
groups. The boy’s final was pulsating right from the start
of the tie. Trinidad had banked that their U-17, Kale Wilson
would win as his opponent, Alex Arjoon, had not looked
himself all week. Arjoon had, however, saved his best squash
for last and after a close first game which he won 14-12
dominated thereafter to win the next two games at 4 and 6
respectively to set things up nicely.
Trinidad’s Caribbean U-15 champion, Mandela Patrick, brought
the score back to 1-1 with a comfortable win in straight
games 11-2, 11-5, 11-4. The next two matches at U-19 #1 and
#2 were both very close, but each time the Guyanese players
DeGroot (U-19 #1) or Dias (U-19 #2) seemed to be out of it
the cheering of the vocal Guyanese supporters seemed to draw
from them fresh reserves and they both won in five games to
give Guyana an unassailable 3-1 lead. The dead rubber was
then won by Trinidad’s Nku Patrick in four games.
Guyana has now made history as the only country to sweep all
three team titles in two consecutive years.

Day Three:
Parris regains girls' title
BARBADIAN Cheri-Ann Parris clinched the girls'
Under-19 title at the Powerade Junior Caribbean Squash
Championships with an exciting five-set victory over
Trinidadian Kerrie Sample in a pulsating final on Monday
night.
In a match of fluctuating fortunes, Parris, the No. 2 seed,
came from a set down on two occasions to prevail 5-11, 11-2,
9-11, 11-7, 12-10 against the No. 1 seed at the Barbados
Squash Club, Marine Gardens.
The contest went down to the wire after the two players
exchanged the first two sets.
Sample went ahead by winning the third set, Parris then drew
level in the fourth, and the Barbadian clinched the title in
the deciding fifth set.
It was the only individual championship on the night for the
Bajans.
The island's only other representative in a final, Gylla
McKenzie, missed out in the girls' Under-13 final.
No. 2 seed McKenzie lost in straight sets to No. 1 seed
Mary Joe Mahfood of Jamaica, who won 11-2, 11-8, 11-9.
Jamaica also captured the boys' Under-13 section through No.
2 seed Jake Mahfood who defeated No. 1 seed,
Trinidadian Nku Patrick 11-7, 12-10, 11-8.
The Under-17 champions were Keisha Jeffrey of Guyana
and Micah Franklyn of Bermuda, while the Under-15
winners were Guyanese Victoria Arjoon and Trinidadian
Mendela Patrick.
The boys' Under-19 final went to top-seeded Joe Chapman
of the Organisation Of Eastern Caribbean States. He won a
five-setter against No. 2 seed Cameron Stanford of the
Cayman Islands.

Day Two:
Craig Archer reports
Two Barbadian players made it safely through today’s
semi-finals. In the girl’s under-13 age group, #2
Gylla Mackenzie
(BAR) once again enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over her
opponent, Alyssa Mullings (JAM). Gylla won 11-8, 11-2, 11-2
to set an interesting final with the top seed,
Mary Jo Mahfood
(JAM). This match will begin at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.
In the girl’s under-19 final the two finalists from last
year will meet once more. The top local junior,
Cheri-Ann Parris
(BAR), who will turn 19 years old next month, will be
looking to bow out of these Junior Caribbean Championships
on a high CASA when she faces her nemesis from last year,
Kerrie Sample
(TRI). Both girls cruised into this evening’s girls under-19
final at 6:00 p.m. with easy wins in straight games over
their respective opponents. Parris defeated Daina King (GUY)
11-0, 11-4, 11-2 while Sample also won comfortably 11-6,
11-6, 11-5 against Amy Gillezeau (TRI).
In all other semi-finals the top two seeds all made if
safely through to their respective finals with the exception
of the boy’s under-17 age group where the top two seeds both
lost. The top seed, Alex Arjoon, (GUY) looked out of sorts
and had no answer for the up-tempo style of the
Micah Franklin
(BER) who is seeded #3/4 and who surprisingly easily 11-6,
11-7, 11-4. The other BU-17 semi-final was a pulsating
affair between the #2 seed, Kale Wilson, and the exciting
young
Kevin Hannaway
(OECS), the Caribbean U-15 champion from last year. This
match held the packed court #1 audience riveted from start
to nail biting finish and was full of long rallies and
incredible retrieving and shot making. In the end Hannaway’s
superior fitness eventually prevailed as he defeated an
exhausted Wilson 8-11, 11-4, 11-2, 9-11, 12-10 in just under
45 minutes.
The Boy’s and Girl’s team competitions will begin on Tuesday
with the official opening ceremony scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
on that day at the Barbados Squash Club. Spectators are
welcome and there is no admission fee all week.
