A busy day in Barbados
saw home favourite Karen Meakins continue her winning
ways to set up a women's final against second seed Mary
Fung-a-Fat, while Jamaica's defending men's champion
Chris Binnie won through to a sixth consecutive final
where he will face Cayman's Cameron Stafford.
Without dropping a single game, Karen Meakins is now
just one step away from securing the overall ladies’ crown
at the 22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships.
Losing only 24 points over three days, the reigning 14-time
national champion has been in a class of her own en route to
making an eighth consecutive appearance in the final of the
Caribbean’s showpiece tournament.
Playing
before a large partisan crowd at the Barbados Squash Club on
Sunday evening, Meakins duly stamped her authority on home
courts, whipping Ashley DeGroot of Guyana 11-2, 11-3,
11-3. She will now face DeGroot’s compatriot Mary
Fung-A-Fat who beat fellow Guyanese Victoria Arjoon
in straight games 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.
“Just one more to go now,” said Meakins, the 2010
National Sportsperson of the Year, who was earlier installed
as the pre-tournament favourite in the absence of defending
champion and World No. 19 Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana.
“Mary is a solid player, but I’m representing local hopes
and I’m extremely motivated to do well. I’m confident of a
good result and I’m going to lay it all on the line for
Barbados in the final.”
Among the men, two players who earlier this month competed
at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have advanced to the
final, with four-time defending champion Chris Binnie
of Jamaica set to face Cameron Stafford of the Cayman
Islands.
In the semi-finals, Binnie was victorious against Guyanese
veteran Richard Chin 11-8, 11-9, 14-12, while Stafford
defeated Chin’s compatriot Sunil Seth 10-12, 11-6, 11-9,
11-8.
Both finals will be played this evening at the Barbados
Squash Club starting from 6p.m.
Quarters:
Meakins reaches Final Four
In ominous form and clearly sensing an opportunity for
outright victory, local squash queen Karen Meakins
has booked her place in final four of the 22nd Senior
Caribbean Squash Championships, currently underway at the
Barbados Squash Club.
Installed as the pre-tournament favourite in the absence of
defending champion and World No. 19 Nicolette Fernandes of
Guyana, the reigning 14-time national champion comfortably
disposed of Akelia Wiltshire in straight games to confirm
her place in the semi-finals of the Caribbean’s premier
squash tournament.
Buoyed by home support, Meakins wasted little time against
the youthful Guyanese, beating the left-hander in straight
games 11-2, 11-6, 11-3. Barbados’ best will now face
Wiltshire’s compatriot, Ashley DeGroot who defeated
Eilidh Bridgeman of the Cayman Islands 11-9, 14-12, 11-6 in
the quarters.
Bridgeman had earlier defeated local player Alex Jordan in a
marathon match that ended 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, and 11-7.
“I’m
feeling good and I’ve played some solid squash so far,” said
Meakins, the 2010 National Sportsperson of the Year. “
But you can’t underestimate any of these girls. This
tournament is stacked with the best players from around the
region, and while I’m quietly confident of getting the job
done, I’m just taking it one game at a time.”
Nadia McCarthy, who along with Meakins was representing the
‘broken trident’ in the quarters, was unsuccessful in her
bid to unseat No. 2 seed Mary Fung-A-Fat of Guyana,
dropping the match 7-11, 11-1, 11-0, 11-8. Fung-A-Fat was
set to face compatriot Victoria Arjoon in the semis
after the 18 year-old defeated Brooke Burrowes of Jamaica
12-10, 6-11, 11-9, 15-13.
Among the men, Shawn Simpson was the lone Barbadian
to make an appearance in the final eight.
Coming up against Richard Chin, Simpson was unable to
overcome the effects of a sore shoulder and surrendered to
the Guyanese veteran in straight games 11-5, 11-7, 11-6.
Chin will now face defending four-time champion Chris
Binnie, the Jamaican winning a close encounter with
Micah Franklin of Bermuda 11-6, 7-11, 11-3, 5-11, 11-7.
In the bottom half of the draw, Sunil Seth of Guyana
wasted little effort in an 11-2, 11-5, 11-8 demolition of
Trinidad and Tobago’s Colin Ramasra. The No. 2 seed will now
face Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands who
defeated Guyanese national champion Alex Arjoon 11-6, 11-8,
4-11, 11-4.
In the Women’s Plate, Alex Jordan was scheduled to oppose
junior standout Amanda Haywood in an all-Barbadian
quarterfinal. Also qualifying for the final eight was Ruth
Deane-Webster.

16-Aug, Day
ONE:
Local hopes still alive at CASA
Despite some impressive performances from the top seeds,
Barbados enjoyed mixed fortunes on the opening day of the
22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships.
Playing at the Barbados Squash Club, seven-time national
champion Shawn Simpson advanced to the third round
with a comfortable 11-1, 11-7, 11-3 victory over Andrew
Boyce of Bermuda, while Gavin Cumberbatch also booked
his place in the Final 16 with a commanding 11-4, 11-2, 11-8
performance against Brendan Mounter of Guyana.
Cumberbatch will now face Chris Binnie of Jamaica,
the four-time defending champion, who yesterday defeated
Jason Doyle of St. Vincent 11-6, 11-5, 11-2, while Simpson
will oppose Doyle’s compatriot Jules Snagg who beat
Robert McDavid of Guyana 11-3, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4.
Local hopes were further boosted late in the evening with
Rhett Cumberbatch recording a hard-fought 6-11, 11-4,
11-3, 11-7 victory over James Bentick of St. Vincent in the
second round. He now awaits the winner of a match between
Jason-Ray Khalil of Guyana and Colin Ramsara of Trinidad and
Tobago.
In contrast, nine local players - Zaki Williams, Matthew
Mackenzie, Shemane Griffith, Mark Gilkes, Khamal Cumberbatch,
Copeland Straker, Ryan Foster, Mark Sealy and Leon Truss -
made their exit after the first round. Stewart St. John of
Barbados also suffered an 11-2, 12-10, 11-9 loss to Kevin
Hannaway of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the second
round.
Other top seeds advancing to the third round include Kale
Wilson of Trinidad and Tobago, Micah Franklin of
Bermuda, Richard Chin and Alex Arjoon of
Guyana, Cameron Stafford and Julian Jervis of
the Cayman Islands, along with Ashante Smith of

victory over Lauren Mahfood of Jamaica, while Nadia
McCarthy also secured a berth in the second round with
an 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7 victory over Rachel Barnes of
Bermuda.
Also scheduled to make an appearance in the second round was

Barbados welcomes
Caribbean squashers
Alan Harris reports
The battle for regional squash supremacy will return to
local shores this coming week as Barbados plays host to the
22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships (CASA).
More than 100 players from eight Caribbean territories -
some arriving fresh off competition at the Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow - have qualified for the weeklong
tournament which runs between August 16th and 23rd at the
Barbados Squash Club.
“The
excitement is steadily building as we look forward to
welcoming our Caribbean neighbours,” said Craig
Archer, president of the Barbados Squash Association.
Barbados last organised the annual Championships in 2003.
“From a national perspective, our mission is clear – to
play with pride and industry and defend our home court
advantage. Despite the presence of a very strong overseas
contingent, we too have assembled a very strong team and we
remain optimistic of a good showing. We are very much
looking forward to a fantastic week of squash.”
Reigning seven-time national champion Shawn Simpson
is expected to lead a buoyant Barbados outfit that includes
Mark Gilkes, Zaki Williams, Ryan Foster, Stewart St. John
and the Cumberbatch brothers - Gavin, Rhett and
Bryant.
Local squash queen Karen Meakins, the reigning
14-time national champion, will captain a team comprising
Nadia McCarthy, Alex Jordan, Amanda Haywood and
Muffin Stollmeyer.
Among the veterans, Mark Sealy (Men’s +50) will
captain the mixed team of Andy Gill (Men’s +40),
Leon Truss (Men’s +60), Kristina Evelyn (Ladies
+40), Lynn DeCambra-McLeod (Ladies +50) and Ruth
Deane-Webster (Ladies +50).
“We have a robust team with experience in spades and
everyone is motivated to win the overall title at home. We
have a plan and we intend to execute,” added Archer.
Barbados finished second overall last year in Guyana, as the
hosts secured the overall crown by winning both the men’s
and ladies’ titles. Barbados are the defending – and
perennial – veteran champions.
This year, the top four players from 2013 are returning with
defending four-time champion and pre-tournament favourite
Chris Binnie of Jamaica leading the charge. Runner-up
last year, Sunil Seth of Guyana has also confirmed
his attendance, along with Guyanese compatriot, Richard
Chin and Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands,
who both reached the semi-finals.
Also expected to mount a serious challenge will be Simpson,
Micah Franklin of Bermuda, Colin Ramsara of
Trinidad and Tobago, along with Guyanese national champion
Alex Arjoon.
Among
the ladies, Meakins is expected to be the top seed, as the
defending champion Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana will not be
competing. Other top players include Nadia McCarthy
and Alex Jordan of Barbados, Brooke Burrowes
of Jamaica, Faith Gillezeau of Trinidad and Tobago,
and the Guyanese trio of Mary Fung-A-Fat, Ashley deGroot
and Victoria Arjoon.
The team event starts on August 19th at the Barbados Squash
Club from 9:00 a.m.
