Canary Islands Open 2011
13-18 Dec, Tenerife, $6k |
|
18-Dec, Final:
Kristian Frost bt Jens Schoor
11-13, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8
Kristian
Frost : " I am very very very happy about my performance today.
I managed to get through in the end. I lost the first game after
being up 10 8. That was very disappointing, but I stepped up the
court from that point and gave it my best. It was close all the way,
but I just got a couple of points ahead toward the end of the three
last games.
A big thanks to David for putting on such a great event. Thanks to
my sponsors: Harrow, Asics, Ketshop and CEP - and a huge thanks to
my mom, Carsten, Camilla, my brother and sisters. Without them I
would never be here. It is one thing believing in yourself... but
having loved ones around supporting me all the way is something
special. I will never be able to pay back what they have done for
me.
Muchas gracias! I would love coming back here next year. It has
really been great!
Jens Schoor: " Though match today with Kristian. I was able
to win the first game and stay a step ahead of him in that game. In
the second it got closer and closer and Kristian was a little
stronger in the end of the game. He got pretty much all my attacking
shots back and made it really hard for me to get any points off him.
The same happened in the third. We were even to the end of the game
and than Kristian pulled away a couple of points and won the game
from there. In the fourth I got a little lead of two points in the
beginning, but i couldnt keep that lead to the end.
All credit to Kristian he played really well today. Congrats for
winning the tournament, but next time I will try to beat him again"

17-Dec, Semi-Finals:
Kristian Frost bt Raphael Kandra: 3-0
(11-8, 11-9, 11-5)
Kristian Frost: " I am very
very pleased with the way I played today. I have been a lot on my
game and my whole approach to my squash. Today it came together in a
nice mix! I was able to very the pace and take the ball short. Rapha
was all over the place like a tiger! Just waiting for any loose shot
I would play. He reads the game so well and he read me so well. All
credit to him. His game is different than what I normally play
against, but that is the beauty of squash. One more match this
season. I am going to give my all tomorrow. Just one match and then
holidays, Christmas and time with my girlfriend, family and friends!
Raphael Kandra: " Yeah at first "well played Kristian!" He
was running all over the court and tried to get every ball back.
That was enough against me today. I wasn't able to play consistent
from beginning until the end of the match. Just some easy things...
But still alright! I am also very happy to have a break at home.
Christmas cookies and all that stuff(-; Usually i would say good
luck to Kristian. But today not! Good luck to Jens for the final, he
is playing a extremely nice tournament so far... so keep going Jens
"Hau ihn weg (-;"
Jens Schoor bt Charles
Sharpes: 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-7)
Charles Sharpes: " very
disappointed to lose today and wasn't sharp enough on there. all
credit to Jens anything loose today he chopped it in, its been a
long season so far and looking forward to a little break and getting
back into it fresh minded and ready for the new year.

16-Dec, Quarter-Finals:
Kristian Frost bt Matias Tuomi
3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-4)
Kristian
Frost: "I am very pleased with my performance. I did well to
keep him behind me and go for my shots. I had a bad start to the
second game, but I recovered and closed the game. Matias played
well. He did well to beat Vidal yesterday. I am happy to be in the
semifinal. Tomorrow will be another battle. I am looking forward to
playing Kandra. That is my first time playing him so that is
perfect. Always nice to play different players. See you tomorrow!"
Matias Tuomi: "Kristian played well and didn't give me too
many free points. My shots weren't working as well as yesterday and
needed to take the second game after being well up. Oh well next
time... Now looking forward to some snow and Christmas in Finland.
Thanks for a great tournament everyone that helped from Canary
Islands squash."
Jens Schoor bt Andrew Birks
3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-6)
Jens
Schoor: " Quiet happy to win again today and advance to the
semis. I played really well today and I was really pleased with my
attacking game today. I felt in control during most of the match and
I managed to keep Andrew under pressure and get him frustrated by
running out of ideas. A great match though.
Happy to be through and to build up my confidence again after the
last couple of weeks. Really looking forward to tomorrows semis."
Raphael Kandra beat Ben Coleman
3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8)
Ben
Coleman: "all credit to Raph he made things difficult for me on
court. good luck to him in the tournament. for me.... disappointed!!
i feel i had much more to give and have felt great in my game
recently! back to the drawing board.
Raphael Kandra: "I had a bad start and gave Ben too many
balls in the middle of the court. So i started to play faster and
let him run from corner to corner. It worked!!! After 2:0 up I had a
mental breakdown but i came back and won in a close game... Also Ben
played some great Squash in the third, and i was a bit frustrated!
Semis I'm coming(-;
Charles Sharpes bt Alejandro Garbi
3-1 (14-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8)
Alejandro
Garbi: "I think play well, but isn’t sufficient to win. The
match has been a repeat of Mallorca's semifinal against Joe Lee,
although I'm happy for the game and final season I have made. Next
year more and better.”

15-Dec, Round One:
(3) Charles Sharpes bt Martin Mosnik
3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-1)
Charles Sharpes: " Felt really comfortable on there today and happy
to get through in 3. Feeling really positive at the moment and
hopefully i can get some momentum going into the next round, i have
to say i am loving the tenerife sun in decemeber makes a good
change."
Martin Mosnik : "I'm not happy with my performance today, especially
with physical form also he was playing just too good attacking
squash today.anyway I'm also happy to be able to play this
tournament after an injury last month."
Matias Tuomi bt David Vidal
3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6)
Matias Tuomi : "Really happy with the win. David is an excellent
player and we have had really tough battles in the past. Today he
seemed a little slow for his standard, but his still fa.ster than
mst of the guys. My drops worked great today so watch ut everyone.
Love the slow but bounchy courts. its great here, everything, the
people, the music the food. Now i`m really happy to go spend the
rest of the day on the beach"
David Vidal: "I was a bit flat today. Mentally I was not there, not
even in the second game that I won. I tried not playing to the front
too much, but I was not patient enough, so in the ended attacking to
early and Matias was really sharp today in the front of the court
and took advantadge on that.
He was moving quicker than me and I was not able to slow the pace
because I was playing too loose and he attacked pretty well.
All credit to Matias who really deserved to win this match. I wish
him luck for tomorrow. Again, thanks to all the organization team in
Tenerife. And gook luck to Alex Garbi!!!
Ben Coleman bt James Simpson
3-0 (11-6, 11-0, 11-6)
James Simpson: "Ben played well today. He was getting early onto the
ball and putting me under lots of pressure. I started getting into
the match in the third game but a few close rallies went his way at
the end. He was too good today and I will have to improve to beat
him next time.
(4) Raphael Kandra bt Leandro Romiglio
3-1
(12-14, 6-11, 11-4, 11-9)
Raphael Kandra: "I started very well in the first and tried to
dominate the match. Unfortunately i did some easy mistakes after 8:5
up and lost that one. After i felt better again and won the
following two games...
Since that i was more comfortable on the court and played on until
the end! Looking forward for tomorrow....(-;
Leandro Romiglio: " It was a game with many ups and downs for me,
mentally I was not constant and this is reflected in the score, I
was happy with my performance beyond that I think I played well, the
physical I played against a bit of a nuisance in the hip, but he has
played very well and always seems to do very fast and hit winners,
lucky for him in the tournament. "
Alejandro Garbi bt Alex Ingham
3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-5)
Alex Ingham: "we played a few times on the tour and had some close
games, i knew what to expect but today wasnt my day. I was always
coming back from a few points down and i was playing my shots at the
wrong time..i´ll be back next year!
Alejandro Garbi: "It was a very intense match, with very good
quality but short duration ball in points except for the first
points of the game, that allowed me to find comfort in the game. It
is a victory that is good to meet me the next game with great
energy. I hope to finish the season and the best way to eliminate
before they will have to give everything on the court but will not
succeed"
(1) Kristian Frost Olesen bt Jamie Mathews
3-0 (11-8, 11-2, 11-9)
Kristian Frost Olesen: "I am very happy making it through today. I
did not know what to expect. Jamie played well and he varied the
pace and played some outstanding drops. It is my first time here and
it is great. Quite a few people came to watch which created a good
vibe. I am looking forward to playing Matias tomorrow.
Jamie Mathews: " I knew going into this match it will be tough. He
produced some great shots from difficult position. I thought I
played well and to able stay in the rallies but at this pace it not
much I can do to harm him. I had three good matches here so I can go
home positively and train hard for upcoming tournaments in 2012."
(2) Jens Schoor bt Jose Facchini
3-1 (11-8, 6-11, 11-2, 11-9)
Jens Schoor: " I started off well in the first game and could take
it home... In the second game Jose managed to put me under pressure
a lot and keep me working the corners. In the middle of the game a
lost my concentration a little bit and it was enough for him to take
the game. In the third I played an almost perfect game and I didnt
give him any chance to play his game. In the all deciding fourth it
got really close. I was able to get a small lead 9-6. Than the
ralleys got longer again and the whole match closer. I got matchball
and could finish the match from there, which I was really happy
about.
Never the less all respect to Jose, he played a great match. He is
such an experienced player and you can feel that in every rally. He
gave me a hard time on court today.
José Facchini: "Very difficult match, hes number 2 of main draw, and
is logical that is a great player. The first game im starting to see
his shots. After in the second, had shot more the ball and i get
won.
Third and Fourth, third very bad, i lost the head, and in the fourth
he entry most concentrate than me,and win by a bit, but very, and
next time a will get to win"
Andrew Birks bt Rory Pennel vs
3-1 (11-5, 12-10, 4-11, 11-5)
Rory Pennell: "Didn´t play too badly this evening, just was
struggling to keep the pace up for any length of time... slightly
suffering from being unwell last week, so came here with little
match play....

14-Dec, Qualifying Finals:
Vidal denies English a
clean sweep in Tenerife
Day Two of the 13th Canary Islands Open saw three Englishmen
qualify for the main draw, Spain's own David Vidal foiled a clean
sweep ...
James Simpson bt Kim Are Killingberg
11-5, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5
Kim
Are Killingberg: "Good and fair match with a good and fair
player. I am changing a lot within my game at the moment, and it i
slowly coming together in bits and pieces, but it is far from enough
at the moment. I sniffed an opening after the third, but he was
hitting his targets a lot better than me in the fourth. I wish him
the best of luck further, and for me remains some more hours of
training."
James Simpson: " I was comfortable in the first two
games but then found myself struggling in the third. He put me under
more pressure and cut down on his errors. In the fourth I tried to
do what I did in the start and found my rythm again. Hopefully I
continue with my good form in the next round."
James Mathews bt Tom
de Mulder 11-5, 1-11, 11-7, 11-9
Jamie
Mathews: " I started off well but dont know what happen in
that 2nd game! But am glad I managed to pull it off the next 2
games. Really happy to get to main. Tom is very good for his age
especially with his skills. He will have a great shot challenging
better players in future. Shall look forward for the match
tomorrow."
Tom de Mulder: "A little disappointed.. I played to
impatient and went for my shots to early every time. While Jamie was
returning everything and didn't actually give me a lot of
opportunities to play attacking. Learned a lot today, and hopefully
it will improve my game for the future.
Andrew Birks bt Chris
Ferguson 3-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5
Today
was not a good day for the Scottish Chris Ferguson, who took a dip
very important and significant treasury at the end of the first
game. Although to win the first game early in the second game,
Andrew moved the ball well and made some very long rallies that led
to Chris physically decayed and had no choice but to try to play the
ball left or try searching the nick. Grand tournament Scottish but
until next year can not prove his worth.
Andrew Birks: "I got off to a very slow start again,
but started to move the ball around better after the first game. You
have to limit your exertions in this heat otherwise you will tire."
David Vidal bt Nathan
Lake 11-8, 12-10,
12-10
David
Vidal: "I started being pretty confident and I took six
points in a row, a good lead; and Nathan did not enter into the game
at the beginning. After that I drop my focus and let him enter the
game. He was close but I managed to close the game.
The second was more or less the same, I took a good lead and drop
again. But he was playing better and better and in the end it was a
metal fight in the tie break. I waa glad to take that game, if not
it woud be a different story today.
Last game was a close one, from the very beginning til the end. He
was attacking much more and trying to put pressure with the volley.
In the end he got to game balls and then the ball broke.
New
ball and I knew that I had to speed up the game because he was a bit
slow turning... It worked and we were in the tie break again. And
like in the second it was a mental fight that I could win and close
the match by 3-0.
Glad to have a spot into the main draw and I must thank David
Valbuena and all the organization here that always make me feel like
I'm at home.
Nathan Lake: "Disappointed not to take one of the
second two games but I wasn't helping matters by giving him a lead
in each game. David is a good player though and was a bit better
today enjoyed the match and good to be back playing."

13-Dec, Qualifying Round One:
Under way in Tenerife
Day One of the 13th Canary Islands Open saw six first round
qualifying matches with mixed success for the Spanish players ...
Chris
Ferguson bt Samuel Rocha 11-5, 11-4, 11-1
Chris Ferguson: "I played
well today against Samuel, and it was a game of good spirit. A very
good practice match against him and I feel he just didn't get
rhythm. I practiced a few shots that I will use in the rest of the
tournament and hopefully I will go through to the main draw tomorrow
against Andrew Birks!"
James Simpson bt Jordi Bercedo 11-9, 11-8, 11-5
Jamie Mathews bt Will John 11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7
Will John: " Jamie played very well today I thought. I couldn't
stick with my game plan for long enough in each game as my
concentration dipped in and out to much with too many mistakes. I
hoped to do a lot better but that is how it is. Thank to the
organizer and the club I will be bak next year I hope!"
Tom de Mulder bt Carlos Cornes 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7
Carlos
Cornes: " Mentally I wasn't ready for this match, I guess its been a
long season for me and couldn't push anymore. I was 8-5 up in the
first three games and couldn't finish it, that's all about
confidence. He's a good player, and its coming up, he's clever on
the court. All credit to him, now off for holidays but, see you next
year.... ill be back.. “
Kim Are Killingberg bt Javier Gonzalvez 11-8, 11-8, 11-9
Javier
Gonzalvez " After play with professional player, with a little
choice, I try maintain ball rhythm but its difficult and faill many
balls, but train much it takes more talent… Thanks all canary public
for support”
