Shawn Delierre
of Montreal, QC captured his first national squash championship on defeating Dane Sharp of Toronto, ON in a hard fought 4 game final 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9. The closely contested final saw the two combatants battled for space but Delierre’s experience proved to be too much for Sharp.

The 30 year old Delierre the #38 ranked player in the world, will represent Canada at the 2013 Men’s World Squash Team Championships from June 9 – 15, 2013 in Mulhouse, France.

Sharp will compete beginning Tuesday at the Canadian National Team Selection Trials in Montreal. Sharp will be joined by Andrew Schnell who finished in 3rd place at the Canadian Nationals, David Letourneau who finished in 5th and Graeme Schnell who finished in 6th place. The top two players from trials will join Shahier Razik and Delierre at the World Team Squash Championships.



Samantha Cornett capped off an impressive squash season by capturing her first Canadian National title with a victory over Alex Norman of Montreal in 4 games 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9. The women’s final saw both combatants demonstrate excellent shot making and great defense.

Cornett was very determined throughout the match and showed her ability to settle down in the key moments to close out the final. The 22 year old from Ottawa is ranked #34 in the world and won the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) Sportsmanship Award earlier this year and she will be competing at the British Open in a few weeks.

Nikki Todd beat Hollie Naughton to capture 3rd place, while Andrew Schnell beat Cameron Seth for 3rd on the men’s side.

03-May, Day Three:
NEW CHAMPIONS WILL BE CROWNED

A new men’s and women’s national champions will be crowned this weekend at the Canadian Squash Championships. The four remaining competitors in Saturday’s finals have never previously won the Canadian Championships and Saturday will present a golden opportunity for all four.

On the men’s side, the first semi-final was between Shawn Delierre of Montreal and Andrew Schnell of Calgary, and it produced some exceptional shot making and tactical play. The 30 year old Delierre came out on top with a 5 game victory 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4 to reach the final.

In the other semi-final, Dane Sharp defeated surprising semi-finalist Cameron Seth comfortably in 3 games, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7.

The women’s side featured World #34 Samantha Cornett of Ottawa taking on Nikki Todd of Regina and using her full skill set to record a 11-7, 11-4, 12-10 victory.

“I’m really excited to get through to the finals. Nikki picked up her game in the third and I got out in three by the skin of my teeth. There are going to be some great matches tomorrow! Looking forward to it and hoping to play well”, said Cornett after her victory.

The other semi final featured Alex Norman of Montreal, the tournament #2 seed against the U19 Canadian Squash Champion Hollie Naughton of Oakville. Naughton started the match very strong taking the first game 8-11. Norman, settled down in the second game and used her experience to take the next 3 games 11-4, 11-7, 11-7.

02-May, Day Two:
SETH & NAUGHTON UPSET SEEDS
TO ADVANCE TO THE SEMI-FINALS


The semi-finals are set at the Canadian Squash Championships; Montreal’s Shawn Delierre will take on Calgary’s Andrew Schnell in one semi, while Toronto’s Dane Sharp will take on former Canadian junior champion Cameron Seth of Elora, Ontario in the other.

Seth advanced to his first Canadian Squash Championship semi-finals by upsetting #7 seed Thomas Brinkman of Manitoba 13-11, 2-11, 11-9, 13-11. Seth will now take on #3 seed Sharp of Toronto who defeated David Letourneau of Toronto 11-6, 11-6, 11-8.

In other quarterfinal matches, Delierre the tournament #1 seed, defeated Michael McCue of Sudbury 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 while, the Schnell brothers Andrew and Graeme squared off with Andrew coming out on top 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9.

On the women’s side, #1 seed Samantha Cornett of Ottawa, cruised past Alix Younger of Winnipeg, 11 – 5, 11-5, 11-1, she will take on Nikki Todd of Regina who defeated fellow Saskatchewan player Jaycee Spagrud 9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-3.

In other quarterfinal matches, #2 seed Alex Norman of Montreal defeated Seanna Keating of Toronto in four games 11-7, 11-9. 7-11, 11-2, while, the recently crowned U19 Canadian Squash Champion Hollie Naughton of Oakville upset #4 seed Susie King of Calgary 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.

Cornett will take on Todd in one semi while Naughton will square off with Norman in the other.


01-May, Day One:
Top seeds advance in Ontario

The 101st edition of the Canadian Squash Championships kicked off today at the Mayfair Parkway Racquets Club in Markham, Ontario; the first of over 340 squash players from across Canada took to the courts to mark the opening of the tournament.

Seven of the eight men’s seeds advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Shawn Delierre of Montreal, Quebec the tournament’s #1 seed in the Open Division won his opening match over Brian Hong of Toronto, Ontario (11-1, 11-1, 11-5). Delierre who is ranked #38 in the World in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Rankings is vying for his first National Title. Defending champion and tournament #2 seed Shahier Razik of Toronto had to withdraw due to injury. Michael McCue of Sudbury, Ontario scored a minor upset, defeating #8 seed Adrian Dudzicki of Toronto (11-4, 16-14, 11-9).

The Women’s Open Division also got underway with Samantha Cornett of Ottawa, Ontario winning her opening match over Dileas MacGowan of Toronto (11-3, 11-1, 11-6). Cornett who is ranked #34 in the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) World Rankings is also vying for her first Canadian Squash Championship title.
