07-May-10:
Razik and Ranieri are Canadian
Champions
VANCOUVER— Shahier Razik of Toronto won the BC Honda
2010 Canadian Squash Championships and retained his national
title when challenger Jonathon Power suffered a leg injury
and withdrew midway through the final match Saturday at
Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver.
On the women’s side, number two seed, Miranda Ranieri
of Waterloo, Ontario, knocked off number one seed and
three-time national champion Alana Miller of Winnipeg, 9-11,
11-9, 11-8, 11-4.
“You never want to win that way,” Razik said of his victory
afterwards in the men’s final. “It’s unfortunate Jonathon
couldn’t continue. I really wanted to play, so this isn’t a
win I’ll be jumping up and down about.”
Although Razik is ranked number one in Canada and was the
tournament’s top seed, the 35-year-old Power, a former world
number one and arguably Canada’s best-ever squash player,
still carries a certain mystique and on-court swagger.
Power, also of Toronto, won game one in the match 11-7, with
Razik taking game two 11-4. Game three had Power leading 4-3
when he made the decision to withdraw and forfeit the match,
citing a pulled leg muscle suffered earlier in the match.
“I let him control the pace in the first game but in the
second I picked things up, made the game a little quicker
and put more pressure on him,” Razik said of the changes
between game one and two.
The win gives Razik his fourth national title in five years.
The only year he didn’t win, 2008, the title was won by
Power.
Ranieri wins women’s title
Down one game to none and trailing the second game 3-9
Ranieri decided to get aggressive and start taking some
chances and earned her first ever national championship.
“I decided I had to start attacking for the rest of the game
and it just worked out for me. Being down like I was, I
thought if it didn’t work, I’d just move on to the next
game. But I also got a bit lucky and hit a few winners,”
Ranieri said after her victory.
“I was a bit nervous in the first game and when I’m nervous,
I get really tentative.”
The win capped off a strong week in Vancouver for Ranieri
who earlier won the Canadian circuit championships, also
over Miller.
The BC Honda 2010 Canadian Squash Championships included

Top seeds reach finals
It’s Canada’s number one squash player versus Canada’s best
ever squash player in the BC Honda 2010 Canadian Squash
Championships mens final.
Toronto’s Shahier Razik, ranked number one in Canada
and the top seed in the tournament advanced to the final by
defeating David Phillips of Montreal, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 on
Friday.
“I don’t think the score tells the story. It was lot tougher
than it looked. He’s a big guy with good touch. He was
controlling and he made me work for it,” said Razik, who’s
also the reigning national champion.
Hi opponent will be Jonathon Power, Canadian squash
legend and former world number one but the number two seed
in this tournament. Power earned a berth in the final by
defeating Montreal’s Shawn DeLierre 11-3, 11-1, 11-7.
“I feel like I’m hitting the ball well and I’m moving not
too badly, although my fitness maybe isn’t where it should
be,” said Power, who last won the national championship in
2008.
On the prospect of facing Razik and what he expects, Power
smiles.
“We play all the time. We’re like the two old guys who only
play each other. I know exactly what to expect.”
The men’s final is scheduled for 4 pm (Pacific), Saturday
May 8 at the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver.
For the women, Alana Miller of Winnipeg advanced to
the final with a 3-0 win over Carolyn Russell. She’ll face
number two seed Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ontario
who defeated Montreal’s Alexandra Norman 11-4, 11-1, 11-8.
Miller, the number one seed in the tournament, dominated the
match, winning 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 and even she confessed
surprise with the ease of her victory over the number four
seeded Russell.
“It wasn’t what I expected. Carolyn and I have played many
times over the years and they’re usually tough matches. I
think maybe she was nervous playing in her home club,”
Miller said of the Vancouver-based Russell.
“I was able to keep the pressure on her, volley as much as I
could, and take it to her whenever I had the opportunity.”
Miller, the national champion in 2007and 2008, missed last
year’s Canadian championships due to injury. This year, she
says she’s healthy and ready to reclaim the title.
