Top Seeds Teran & Rodriguez Take
Gold
Contrasting finals brought to a climax the individual Squash
Championships in the Central America & Caribbean Games in
the Colombian capital Bogota, where top seeds Miguel Angel
Rodriguez and Samantha Teran claimed the gold medals.
It was a popular home triumph in the men's event where
Bogota-born-and-based Rodriguez - the highest-ranked
Colombian of all-time - reached the final without dropping a
game.
But the 24-year-old world No30's surprise opponent was
rising Mexican star Cesar Salazar, the 22-year-old third
seed who had upset compatriot and defending champion Eric
Galvez in the previous round.
But Rodriguez had to battle for 75 minutes before finally
getting the better of world No68 Salazar to win the gold
medal for the first time.
The women's final was a more straightforward affair in which
Mexican Samantha Teran - winner of the title eight years
ago, but runner-up last time in 2006 - reached the final
after avenging her 2006 final loss to Guyana's Nicolette
Fernandes in the semis.
And Teran's surprise opponent in the final was Karen
Meakins, the sixth seed from Barbados who ousted second seed
Catalina Pelaez in the other semi.
But Teran, the world No12 from Mexico City was too strong
for Meakins, winning in straight games to reclaim the gold
medal.
"I
lost 3-0...played okay, probably not quite as well as the
rest of the tournament but that could be because I was under
a lot more pressure as she is such a good player.
"So a silver medal! Medal presentation was last night, the
medal is lovely! Teams start today and we have Trinidad this
morning....."

Meakins into CAC Ladies Final
Jonathan Gallacher reports
Karen
Meakins stunned higher seeded Columbian opposition for
the second consecutive day at the 2010 Central American and
Caribbean Games in Bogota.
In the quarter finals on Monday she defeated fourth seeded
Silvia Angula 12-10, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9 in 38 minutes
to secure at least a Bronze medal for Barbados in the CAC
Games.
In the semi finals Meakins faced second seeded Catalina
Pelaez. The top ranked Columbian had defeated Meakins'
Barbadian team mate Cheri-Ann Parris 3-0 in her quarter
final. Despite home support Pelaez was unable to subdue 37
year old Meakins who powered into a commanding lead in the
first game which she maintained to take it 11-7.
Pelaez
displays immaculate composure and never looked phased
against the ten-time Barbados Champion, playing some stunning
long drops. However, Meakins was in dominant form hitting
the ball crisply and was in no mood to relinquish her lead
and took the second game 11-9.
Again Meakins made a good start in the third and had her
first match ball at 10-6. A drop shot into the front right
corner looked to have won the match. A full length dive by
the young Columbian resulted in a scrambled lob into the
middle of the court. The ball fell awkwardly for Meakins and
although the court was at her mercy she could not get a
decent shot and agonisingly hit it out. The Columbian then
hit a precise winner to bring it to 10-8 before Meakins
found herself in a similar situation to the first match ball
with Pelaez stranded at the front of the court. There was no
mistake this time and a deafening cheer from Meakins and the
Barbados team was affirmation that she had reached the
final.
She will now face top seeded world no. 12 Samantha Teran
from Mexico for the Gold medal on Wednesday evening. Teran
avenged her defeat from the previous CAC Games in 2006
against Caribbean number one Nicolette Fernandez of Guyana.
She won a high quality match 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 in 34 minutes
In the men's final world number 30 Miguel Rodriguez
of Columbia will take on Mexico's Cesar Salazar.
Rodriguez defeated Jamaica's Chris Binnie while Salazar
upset the seedings against Eric Galvez in an all Mexican
affair 3-1 in 54 minutes.
