Buler Challenge Cup 2010
07-11 Sep, Hong Kong

Finals:
[2] Donna Urquhart bt [1] Annie Au
       11-13, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9  (50m)
Leo Au bt [3] Kamran Khan
        13-11, 11-9, 11-3 (50m)

"I did it the hard way like yesterday and came back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to finally win 11-9 in the fifth. This is the biggest tournament I have won to date!"

Donna Denies Au Double

Second-seeded Australian Donna Urquhart denied the local crowd an Au family double in the Buler Challenge Cup when she upset Hong Kong's top seed Annie Au in the final of the women’s  event in Hong Kong.

Both players had reached the climax after surviving five-game semi-finals – and Au, the 21-year-old world No17, twice took the lead in the final.

But Urquhart, who overtook her opponent in the September rankings to secure a career-best 16th place, held her nerve to claw back the advantage before winning 11-13, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 after 50 minutes.

The victory marks the 23-year-old from Brisbane's fifth career title – but her first of the year. It will also undoubtedly boost Urquhart's confidence going into next week's Soho Square World Open in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, where she is drawn to face New Zealand's 16th seed Jaclyn Hawkes in the opening round.

The final of the men's  event also produced a surprise outcome when unseeded Leo Au – Annie's younger brother – pulled off his fourth shock win a row in the event by beating third-seeded Malaysian Kamran Khan 13-11, 11-9, 11-3 in 50 minutes.

The new men's champion, aged 20 and ranked 174 in the world, is celebrating his maiden PSA Tour title – and can surely look forward to a significant rise in his PSA world ranking.

Top seeds survive five-set semis
as Aus make finals ...

An Au Hong Kong double is now on the cards after siblings Annie Au and Leo Au reached the finals of the Buler Challenge Cup following successes in the semi-finals of the international squash event in Hong Kong.

Unseeded Leo Au caused his third successive upset in the men’s event when he beat Egypt’s Omar Abdel Meguid, the fourth seed, 8-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-9.

Now celebrating his third appearance in a PSA Tour final, the 20-year-old world No174 will face third seed Kamran Khan.

The 20-year-old Malaysian denied the crowd an all-Hong Kong final by upsetting second seed Dick Lau 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4 in a 90-minute marathon.

Khan, son of the legendary Pakistani Jansher Khan, is also marking his third Tour final appearance - but his first outside his home country.

Top seed Annie Au was expected to reach the final of the women’s event – but the world No17 was taken the full distance by third seed Delia Arnold before beating the Malaysian 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-2, 11-6 to reach her 11th Tour final.

The Hong Kong left-hander will now face second seed Donna Urquhart, the 23-year-old Australian who has moved ahead of the event favourite in the September world rankings.

But Urquhart twice had to come from behind to fight off the challenge of Hong Kong’s Joey Chan. The world No16 from Brisbane notched up her tenth appearance in a WISPA Tour final when she defeated fourth seed Chan 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-7, 12-10 in 47 minutes.

Au Siblings Soar Into Semis
In Hong Kong

Hong Kong siblings Annie Au and Leo Au have thrilled the crowds at the Hong Kong Squash Centre by taking local interest in the Buler Challenge Cup through to both the men’s and women’s semi-finals.

Annie, top seed in the women’s  event, followed an 18-minute first round win by despatching Australia’s fifth seed Lisa Camilleri 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 in just 16 minutes in the quarter-finals in Hong Kong.

The 21-year-old world No17 now faces Malaysia’s No3 seed Delia Arnold for a place in the final.

There is local interest too in the other semi where Joey Chan takes on Australian Donna Urquhart. Fourth seed Chan defeated Malaysia’s Siti Munirah Jusoh 11-6, 11-6, 11-6, while second seed Urquhart overcame fellow Antipodean Kylie Lindsay, the No8 seed from New Zealand, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4.

Unseeded in the men’s event, Leo Au pulled off a sensational first round upset by ousting top-seeded Egyptian Karim AGA Samy.

The 20-year-old world No174 then maintained his giant-killing run today when he beat another Egyptian, eighth seed Ahmed Hawas, 14-12, 11-2, 11-2 to set up a semi-final clash with fourth seed Omar Abdel Meguid, also an Egyptian.

Dick Lau will be hoping to take local interest into the final from the other semi, where he faces Malaysian Kamran Khan. Second seed Lau needed 50 minutes to overcome compatriot Anson Kwong 11-3, 11-8, 16-14, while Khan removed Kuwait qualifier Salem Fayez Mohammed 11-3, 11-1, 11-7 in just 27 minutes.
