England Squash & Racketball (ESR) has today announced that
the British Open will not be held in 2011, and will
return next year as the showpiece occasion for squash in the
UK - with London as the preferred destination.
A strategic partnership between ESR, Red Ridge
Communications and the PSA has already been agreed to ensure
the 2012 British Open takes place and is a hugely successful
tournament.
Nick Rider, ESR Chief Executive said: “We know that
2012 will be a huge year for sport and we’re going to tap
into that excitement. With Red Ridge’s commercial expertise
and PSA’s backing, I’m convinced we have the right team in
place to deliver a special event – in keeping with the
British Open’s proud traditions. Taking this decision is the
choice between rushing an event this year, and waiting to
create a real spectacle.”
Alex Gough, PSA CEO, added: “We are hugely supportive
of ESR and its ambitions to bring the British Open back to
London.”
Ingrid Lofdahl-Bentzer, Chairman of the WISPA,
further added: “WISPA is delighted to hear of the efforts
being made to get The British Open back on the calendar in
2012. As one of the most prestigious tournaments in the
sport’s history, it deserves to be showcased in the best
possible way. This will be ensured by ESR's firm commitment,
PSA’s know-how and Red Ridge’s commercial support. WISPA
will obviously support all the parties as much as possible
as there is a great desire to see this event back on the
tour.”
The British Open Masters – much beloved of senior
players across the world - will still be taking place in
June this year and more details will be announced later
in the year.
