NSC Finals
Paul Houghton reports

The Girls Under 17 final was first up on the all glass court in manchester today, Eleanor Lake against Alicia Mead. With the top two seeds already knocked out of the tournament this was a hard match to call although the advantage would have to go to Eleanor Lake as she has previously won a junior national title. Lake made that advantage count, 11-7 in the first and 11-4 in the second. Mead battled hard in the third to try and get back into the game but Lake had enough to keep her at bay as she took the third game 11-9 to claim the U17 National Title.

The Boys Under 17 Final saw long time rivals Richie Fallows and Ashley Davies go head to head. Fallows got off to a great start as he took the first game 11-5 and the second 11-7. Fallows perhaps relaxed a little in the third game and that was enough to let a determined Davies get back into it, 12-10 to Davies. The rallies were long and brutal at points in this match, with both players flying around the court, Davies kept his fight back going and took the 4th game 11-8. A five set final, both gave it their all and after 89 minutes it was 11-9 to Davies, a great fightback from 0-2 down to claim his first national title.

Onto the Girls Under 19 final and it was Katie Smith who was given the job of trying to halt Emily Whitlock's run at these championships. Whitlock had not dropped a game all weekend and it didnt look like she was about to start now, taking control and setting a fast pace in the first game which she comfortably took 11-1. She continued that fashion and took the second 11-4. Smith needed to get into the game and that she did, matching Whitlock in the third and taking it into a tie break. Smith won it 12-10, the first game Whitlock had dropped throughout the tournament. Perhaps Smith had used too much to take that third game, or perhaps Whitlock was just too good and moved to another level, but the fourth game was over as quick as the first with Whitlock dominating yet again, 11-1 the score as she claimed the U19 British Championship to add to her collection.

The Boys Under 19 finished the days finals as the top two seeds came together to battle it out for the Don Sanderson trophy. James Earles took on Declan James and from the start Earles looked dangerous and clinical, he raced into the lead 11-5. James fought back and levelled the score 1-1 as he took the second 11-7. Earles stepped up a gear and shown amazing form that has seen him stroll to the final without dropping a game, he upped the pace and stormed into a lead with an 11-3, James tried to fight back but Earles kept his foot on the gas and didnt let up or give James any chance to get back into it, Earles duly took the fourth game 11-5 and now adds the U19 Don Sanderson Trophy to his cabinet.

U13/U15 Finals at Northern

Stephen Wright reports

Elise Lazarus was a different class throughout the tournament and was in fine form in the final. She was just too quick and to clinical for her opponent, Amy Jones, and took only 16 minutes to win her first British Championship title.

Malik came into the final without having really been tested in any of his previous games. Where as finch had worked tooth nail to win in the semis to get through to the final, so on paper Malik looked to be the strong favourite for the title. Finch however was in no mood to roll over for his opponent and managed to take a lead in the match 2-1. Malik however was not going to let his chance to become champion slip away and regrouped to take the next to matches and the title, winning 3-2.

The girls under 15 final was an all Kent affair. Henley who had beaten number 1 seed in the semi final looked like she could make a real impact in the final however Kennedy herself was in punishing form and was yet to drop a game in the whole tournament. Kennedy continued this record by winning 3-0 in final.

The boys under 15 final was a Yorkshire battle between close friends Jack Cooper & James Peach. Their previous 2 matches in competitions had both gone the distance to 5 sets so the final was always set to be a close encounter. The players shared the first two games making the final 1-1 but in the third game Peach handed the advantage to Cooper by tinning at 11-11 to give cooper game ball and the chance to go 2-1 up. Cooper grabbed his opportunity and hit a stunning nick to clinch a crucial third game 13-11. The fourth game was full of tense and brutal rallies with some outrageous shot making and recovery from both players however Cooper managed to get in front and win the final game and the match 3-1.

Semis Report– NSC

Girls Under 17: Surprises continued today in the GU17 draw as the number 2 seed was defeated in the quarter finals. Lucy Beecroft was in great form as she took on England's number 1 Anna Kimberley. Beecroft got off to a great start and even though she lost the second game 2-11 it didn’t stop her as she went on to win 3-1. Beecroft moved into the semi finals to face the 3/4 Alicia Mead who had previously beaten Millie Pughe.

Beecroft and Mead played a 5 set thriller, with the scores level at 2-2 it was impossible to call, in the end it was Mead who crossed the finish line to move into the final. Kip Quiney continued her run as she moved into the semi final to face Eleanor Lake, the Gloucestershire pair played a tough match with Lake taking the first 12-10 after saving 4 game balls. Lake carried the momentum through and won 3-0 to book her place in tomorrows final against Mead.

Boys Under 17:The BU17 continued to go to the seeds plan as all top 4 seeds moved into the semi finals. They didn’t all have it easy though, Peter Joyce came up against an in form George Parker and It took 73 minutes for Joyce to take the match 3-1. Lyell Fuller also had a tough game against Hamish Falconer, another 3-1 match won by the higher seed in a slightly quicker but still tough 51 minutes.

Fallows and Davies both moved into the semi’s with 3-0 victories and it was maybe no surprise that the fresher pair and top two seeds have made it through to the final. Fallows with a 3-1 victory over Joyce in 43 minutes while Davies came back from being one game down to beat Lyell Fuller 3-1 in 52 minutes.

Girls Under 19:Charlotte Kirkwoods run in the tournament was stopped as she came up against Lauren Tamila. Tamila won 3-0 to go into the semis and face Emily Whitlock. Whitlock had previously cruised through the quarters with a 3-0 in 17 minutes against Chloe Pearson.

Whitlock is enjoying fantastic form at present and again only took 17 minutes to see off Tamila with another 3-0 victory. Whitlock now moves into the final and will face Katie Smith who saw off Victoria Temple Murray in their semi final.

Boys Under 19: The BU19 saw 3 of the top 4 seeds safely through to the semi finals. Declan James was pitted against Adam Auckland while James Earles faced Matt Sidaway. Sidaway was one all in games with Olli Holland when Holland was forced to retire with a groin injury.

James played his semi final first and went a game down, Auckland couldn’t keep the momentum though as James fought back and took the next 3 games, a 3-1 win will see James in tomorrows final. Earles and Sidaway finished the days action, Earles has been playing well all week and he kept his form, a 3-0 victory. Earles will now battle James for the Don Sanderson Trophy.

Final Line Ups:
GU17:*3/4 Eleanor Lake  v *3/4 Alicia Mead
BU17: *1 Richie Fallows  v *2 Ashley Davies
GU19: *1 Emily Whitlock  v *2 Katie Smith
BU19: *1 Declan James  v *2 James Earles

Semis at The Northern

Number 1 seed Curtis Malik wasted no time in booking his place in the final taking only 16 minutes to dispatch ¾ seed James Wyatt 11-4, 11-6, 11-7. In the other semi final, Number 2 seed Kyle Finch's route to the final was slightly more testing. Finch who lost the first two matches 11-4 to ¾ seed Joshua Atwell, had to save 4 match balls in the third game and managed to dig deep and win 15-13. After winning the third game, Finch never looked back and won the game 3-2 in 39 minutes.

The Girls Under 13 all so had some drama as number 2 seed Amy Jones scraped through with beating ¾ seed 12-10 in the fifth game to get through to the final. It was a completely different case for number 1 seed Elise Lazarus who took 17 minutes to win her match 3-0.

The first boys under 15 semi was a repeat of the English Junior Champs final. James Peach faced off against Patrick Rooney. In an extremely tight match Peach managed to win 3-0 lasting 36 minutes. In the second Semi final Emyr Evans was close to taking the first game giving everything he had in the first game however Jack Cooper was able to cope and won the first 13-11. Evens seemed to put his all in to the first game and had nothing left for the next 2 games and Cooper won 11-6 & 11-3 to set up an all Yorkshire final.

Major upset in the girls under 15 as Number 1 seed Elin Harlow was beaten 3-0 by 3/4 seed Amelia Henley. In the second the semi final Kace Bartley show determination and grit in the first game but was beaten by number 2 seed Georgina Kennedy.

Fri 28th, Day TWO:
Seeds fall at the National Centre!
Paul Houghton reports

The GU17 had the greatest upset today as the number 1 seed Fiona Murphy was defeated by 9/16 Kip Quiney, 3-0 in 20 minutes! Quiney will now move into the quarter finals to face 5/8 Lucy Pallett. Katrina Burrows had a good win as she beat 5/8 Martha Possegger, she will face Eleanor Lake who ended the run of Alison Thomson. Anna Kimberley now takes over as favourite as she beat a determined Jessica Davies 3-1 in 37 minutes. Kimberley will come up against last year's U15 Champion Lucy Beecroft.

The Girls U19 also had a surprise defeat, 9/16 Charlotte Kirkwood beat 3/4 Sophie Lemom, Kirkwood now faces Lauren Tamila in the quarters. The rest of the top seeds made it safely through to the quarters, although 9/16 Hannah Williams gave her a run for her money, a five set match ended with Ward taking it 11-9 in the fifth.

9/16 George Parker made it through to the quarter finals in the BU17’s as he took just under an hour to beat 5/8 Brian Harvey. Georges brother Luke who has been having a great run in the tournament from the qualifiers had a chance to join him but came up against an in form Lyell Fuller. Fuller took no chances today as he moved into the quarters with an 11-2 11-2 11-2 victory in 17 minutes.

The BU19 ran to seed, with all top 8 seeds making it through to the quarter finals bar one upset. Taminder Gata Aura played well to defeat Oliver Mapp 3-0 in 33 minutes. Taminder will now face Adam Auckland in the quarters tomorrow.

And over at The Northern ...
Stephen Wright reports

Girls Under 13: Hot favourite Elise Lazarus showed her intent with a 12 minute 3-0 win in round 2 over Lucy Soulby. Number 2 seed Amy Jones also progressed through to round 3 however, she was tested in her second game by Karina Tyma 12- 10 but Jones managed to hold her nerve and join the rest of the seeds. Carys Jones set up a tough test with Elise Lazarus after taking out 5/8 seed Ellen Cooper.

In the girls under 15, qualifier Lianne Kearney continued where she left of from yesterday beating 9/16 seed Tayla Mounter however was beaten by 5/8 seed Lowri Roberts in the second round. Amber Peacey raised a few eyebrows when the unseeded player beat 5/8 seed Aisling Guerzoni 3-1 in the first round and then 9/16 Hannah Mulvey 3-0 in round 2 to set up a quarter final with Amelia Henley.

Grace Gear caused the other upset of the second round when she beat 5/8 seed Florie Smith. The rest of the draw is went with seeds.

In the boys under 13, all seeds progressed to round 2 except current Under 11 English Junior Champion Oscar Khoo & Jack Turvey. Khoo was beaten by Ryan Burrell-Grant who continued his great form from qualifying and beat the 9/16 seed 3-1. Turvey was beaten in the closest match of the tournament which could have gone either way against Hasnaat Farooqi, however it was Farooqi who crossed the finish line first winning 15-13 in the 5th. Farooqi carried his form in to round 2 and defeated 5/8 seed Oliver Walls in another epic 5 set match this time winning 13/11 in the fifth to claim a place in the last 8. Number 1 seed Malik showed is dominance in round 2 sending a message out to the other players winning 11-2, 11-1, 11-3 in 13 minutes.

In the bottom half of the boys under 15 round 1 draw 9/16 seed seem to be somewhat of a curse as Oliver Harris lost 3-2 to Jack Martell, Mark Richmond was beaten by Paddy Harrison and Ewen Howard was defeated by qualifier by Christopher Wiggins.

Their success was short lived as the all lost in round 2. Round 2 all went with seeds except for a close match which saw last year’s U13 Champion and 5/8 seed, Harry Falconer who lost to 9/16 Robbie Keefe.

Fri 28th, Day TWO:

NSC Afternoon Report

Main Draws got underway today at the NSC. The BU17 started the day off and the top seeds strolled through the first round, however we did see some upsets. The longest match of the tournament so far belongs to Harry Faulkner (Herts) an unseeded player who took 77 minutes to beat 9/16 Tom Lee (Yorkshire) 3-2. Miles Jenkins (Surrey) also caused an upset as he defeated 5/8 seed Alex Pendleton from Wales, 60 minutes for another 3-2 battle! Luke Parker (Leics) is another one having a great run so far, the only qualifier in this category that has made it into the last 16, he took out 9/16 Andrew Taylor 3-1.

The Girls U17 ran much the same as the Boys, with the majority of seeds going through to the next round comfortably. Again there was an upset with a 5/8 welsh player crashing out early, Jenny Haley came up against a determined Joely Bennett (Glos), another 5 set match with Bennett coming from 2-1 down to win 3-2. Alison Thomson (Surrey) daughter of Colets favourite Alan Thomson surprised Nia Kenward 9/16 (Wales) as she moved into the next round with a 3-0 victory.

The U19 boys and girls are playing their first round as I type, so far no real upsets, the boys top seeds are playing well and winning comfortably, the girls top seeds all have a bye into tonights second round. One result to report is Robert Luke, a qualifier from Wales who has booked a place into the last 16 with a win over 9/16 Josh Taylor (Leics), Luke will now have a tough match against 3/4 Adam Auckland.

Ryan Burrell Grant also continues his winning run in the tournament as he beat 9/16 Oscar Khoo. A mention must also go to qualifier Daniel Kamel of Wales who managed to get a game off ¾ seed James Wyatt but eventually succumbed to defeat 3-1.

Thu 27th, Day ONE:
Ryan qualifies in Manchester
Alison Henley reports

The Technifibre British Junior Championships got underway today at the National Squash Centre, 76 players were present to play in the qualification round, all fighting for a place in the main draws which start at 9pm tomorrow.

The Boys in the U19, U17, U15 and U13 categories all battled through 2 qualifying rounds and the Girls U15 played one round, there was no qualifying requirement for the Girls U13, U17 and U19 categories.

Following in the footsteps of England International Adrian Grant, his half-brother, Ryan Burrell Grant qualified for the U13’s beating Toby Harding (Avon) and Joseph Twigge (Yorks) both 3 - 0.

Coached by his father Trevor at the Park Langley Club in Kent, 12 year old Ryan has being playing squash for 4 years, but has only recently started to compete on the Junior Circuit. Naturally his hero is Adrian, who keeps an eye on his younger siblings progress, and will be delighted with his efforts. Ryan will now go into the main draw and will face Oscar Khoo a 9/16 from Middlesex.

With the qualifiers decided, 32 monrad draws in all the categories will be played at the Northern Club in Didsbury for the U13’s and U15’s while the U17’s and U19’s remain at the National Squash Centre.

Paul Houghton reports

Manchester will once again play host to the Tecnifibre British Junior Championships at the end of October. This prestigious event is now well established as the biggest domestic junior tournament on the circuit, complimenting the Tecnifibre British Junior Open. Next weekend will see the best players in Britain fight it out for a coveted National title.

Declan James (Nottinghamshire) heads the seeding for the Boys Under 19 and will be looking to capture his first British title, however he will come up against tough opposition with Adam Auckland (Lincolnshire), Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) and James Earles (Yorkshire) also in the hunt. Emily Whitlock (Cheshire) the world number 40 has been making a real impression on the Wispa senior tour and comes into the event as red hot favourite. Last season Whitlock had a clean sweep in the juniors claiming the U17 British Junior Championship Title, the U17 British Junior Open and the U19 English Championship, she will be hoping to continue that run by adding the U19 crown to her impressive collection. Katie Smith (Yorkshire), Hannah Davies (Wales) and Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) make up the rest of the top 4 seeds.

Wales have a strong presence as former British Champions Fiona Murphy (Wales) and Elin Harlow (Wales) return, Murphy as the top seed in the Girls Under 17 category, her main challenge is likely to come from Anna Kimberley (Gloucestershire) who is currently the English number 1. Harlow tops the seeds in the Girls Under 15’s, with Georgina Kennedy (Kent) her main threat for the title. Richie Fallows (Essex) will be looking to capture the Boys Under 17 title but will face stiff competition from Ashley Davies (Derbyshire), Lyell Fuller (Devon) and Peter Joyce (Avon) who are all looking for their first British title.

Yorkshire looks a likely destination for the Boys Under 15’s title as top two seeds James Peach and Jack Cooper look favourites to meet at the final, Ben Windle (Surrey) and Emyr Evans (Wales) will look to stop that from happening. The Boys Under 13 will see Curtis Malik (Sussex) and Kyle Finch (Hampshire) seeded to meet in the final as areElise Lazarus (Essex) and Amy Jones (Buckinghamshire) who hold the top two positions in the Girls Under 13.
