Tecnifibre British Junior Championships 2009

29 Oct - 01 Nov, Manchester
Finals Day
Chris Nutley reports from Sportcity

The Girl’s Under 17 final saw 9/16 seed Brogan Lane (Hertfordshire) taking on the top seed, and two times British Champion Emily Whitlock (Cheshire). Brogan had enjoyed a great weekend and I suppose the pressure was now off – she had exceeded all expectations and could enjoy the match and give it a real go. This is exactly what happened and the first game was anybodies until Emily sneaked it 11-9. From this point on Emily took control and although it was highly competitive went on to record a 11-9 11-6 11-7 victory in 28 minutes. Emily has proved herself once again to be the real star of the age group and a fantastic prospect for the future. Emily has now amassed British Under 13 / 15 and 17 titles – a great achievement – now only the Under 19’s to go!

Next up was the Nottingham SRC battle between Oliver Holland and Declan James on the all glass court at Sport City. In his first British final Declan got off to a flier and took the first game 11-5. However anyone expecting a quick conclusion were way off the mark as Oliver fought back to take the next two and with it a 2-1 lead. He again looked in control at 7-5 in the forth before this time it was Declan who turned things around and levelled things at 2 all. The decider was brutal with some wonderful rallies and real top level squash. Declan looked to in charge at 9-7 but things turned again and Oliver was able to close it out 11-9 – 69 minutes of great action. It was a hard end for Declan with neither player deserving to lose but it was Oliver’s day and again a third British title.

The Under 19’s play for the Don Sanderson British Under 19 Championship and Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) was in her usual impressive form as she quickly moved into a 2 game lead over Carrie Ramsey (Yorkshire) in the girls final. Carrie, appearing in her British final found some rhythm but it was Millie’s day and she took it 11-4 11-4 11-9 (28m). At the risk of repeating myself a third British title for Millie.

The last final saw top seed Ben Coleman (Essex) take on Robert Downer (Hampshire) in the boys Under 19’s with both players looking for their first title. A competitive match followed but there only ever looked like one winner – Ben taking it 11-7 11-6 11-7. This will cement Ben’s position as one of the very best juniors in the country as he starts to look at entering the senior ranks. For Robert, it has been a great weekend and he still has next year to look forward to.

A great weekend of squash.

Finals Day at The Northern Squash club

Girls Under 13 kicked off the main finals at The Northern Squash Club today. Eleanor Epke continued her unstoppable run, claiming her first National Title without dropping a game throughout the whole tournament. Georgina Kennedy fought hard in the 3rd taking the game to a tie breaker but was unable to clinch it, Epke taking it 14-12 and the match 3-0 in 20 minutes.
On to the Boys Under 13 final and the hopes of Wales taking a National title home resting on the shoulders of No2 seed Emyr Evans. Evans started off well taking the first game 11-6. The No1 seed, James Peach from Yorkshire then upped his game and fought back, taking the next 3 games 11-6 11-6 11-8 and the title back to Yorkshire.

The Girls Under 15 final saw reigning U13 champion and No2 seed Eleanor Lake take on 5/8 seed Lucy Pallet. Pallet was the fresher player after Lake had two tough matches ending 3-2 in the Quarters and Semi’s, Lake however seemed a class above and took the final with a flourish in 19 minutes, 11-6 11-5 11-8. Lake now adds the Under 15 National Title to her list of honours.

The Boys Under 15 final saw the top two seeds meet, with both players on form throughout the tournament it was hard to call. No1 seed Richie Fallows started off well in a fast paced match. Fallows took the first 11-5. Ashley Davies then fought back, matching Fallows point for point and going to a tie breaker, unfortunately he couldn’t see it out and Fallows took then 2nd 12-10. Again in the 3rd it was tight, both players keeping in touch with each other but Fallows edged it 11-9 and claimed the National Title.

Previous Championships

Day Two, down to the finals
Chris Nutley reports from Sportcity

Former Under 13 and 15 British Champion Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) stepped up a gear today and ousted top seed James Earles (Yorkshire) in the Under 17 semi-final. It was a close encounter but Holland won through in 3 and is yet to drop a game in the championships. He now goes on to meet No2 seed and fellow county and Nottingham SRC player Declan James who has also been in impressive form all weekend. The outcome is a difficult one to call as both players know each other inside out but I suppose although he is the lower seed Oliver does have the big game experience....but who knows!

Emily Whitlock (Cheshire) is in a league of her own in the Girl’s Under 17’s and is hot favourite to pick up the title. Today she saw off Issie Norman Ross (Hampshire) in the quarters and then overcame a spirited Katie Smith (Yorkshire) in the semi’s. Emily now faces the surprise package, Brogan Lane (Hertfordshire) who has defeated three higher seeded players so far to reach her first British final. After yesterdays win over Jade Thompson (Yorkshire) she started today by dispatching Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) and then Hannah Davies (Wales) in the semi final - a great event so far but tomorrow brings the ultimate challenge.

Carrie Ramsey (Yorkshire) endured a rollercoaster day in the Girl’s Under 19’s. In her quarter final against Rebecca Quiney (Gloucestershire) she let a 2 game lead slip (both 10-12) before regaining the initiative and taking the fifth 11-3. She then moved on to play the No1 seed Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) and after taking the first two games kept up the pressure and completed a very impressive 3-0 win to make the final.

No2 seed Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) had a titanic tussle with Julianne Courtice (Gloucestershire) in the other semi final. Although it was a 3-0 win the score line says it all – 13-11 16-14 13-11 (55m). So to the final – seeding and history says another title for Millie but Carrie has steadily improved over the last few seasons and does train on the courts at Sport City – a possible upset on the cards!

In the Boy’s Under 19’s top seed Ben Coleman (Essex) made the final the hard way. In the mornings quarter final he fought back after losing the first game to 9/16 seed Nick Hopcroft (Surrey) and eventually took the tie 3-2 in 75 minutes – not the preparation for his semi final against Nathan Lake (Gloucestershire) later in the day! Ben again lost the first game but this time responded well to beat Nathan 3-1 in a slightly less 61 minutes. Ben’s opponent in the final is another surprise – 5/8 seed Robert Downer (Hampshire).

Robert took out 3/4 seed Ben Rodgers (Devon) 3-0 in the quarters and then pulled off a fantastic win over the No2 seed Charles Sharpes (Surrey) in the semi’s. Charles had been widely tipped for the title but was outgunned by Robert in a closely contested match 11-5 5-11 11-7 14-12 in 45 minutes. Coleman will start as favourite for the title but I doubt he will have it all his own way – I’m sure Downer will be ready for the biggest match of his junior career!

Update from The Northern Squash Club
Paul Houghton reports

No surprises in the BU13 draw with the top seeds sailing through the quarter finals, the semi finals were slightly tougher but that didn’t affect the outcome as the top two seeds will contest the final tomorrow. James Peach the No1 seed from Yorkshire had the slightly easier semi, the first game of the match against Bradley Masters was a tense battle ending 15/13 in Peach’s favour who then went on to win the match 3-0. Emyr Evans the No2 seed from Wales had a tougher time in his semi, he was pushed to 5 games by Patrick Rooney. Evans held his nerve and took the last game 11/7 and is now the only Welsh player to reach a final this week.

The GU13 Quarter finals lined up and with 2 Welsh players in each Semi there was a chance for an all Welsh final. Lowri Roberts came up against an unstoppable Eleanor Epke, Epke had not dropped a game all week and carried that winning streak through as she eased past 3-0 in 17 minutes. Her opponent in the final is Georgina Kennedy, the 3/4 from Kent who defeated the Welsh No1 and the No2 seed Elin Harlow 4-1 in her semi final.

The Boys Under 15 semi finals saw the top 2 seeds tested as they came through the Quarters rather easily, the No1 seed Richie Fallows coming through 3-0 in 26 minutes as the No2 seed Ashley Davies moved through with a 3-0 win in 20 minutes. The Semi’s were slightly tougher with both games lasting over 40 minutes, however both top seeds go into tomorrow’s final with each winning 3-1 against Lyell Fuller and Hamish Falconer respectively.

The Girls Under 15 has continued to throw up surprises and that hasn’t changed today. 5/8 seed Lucy Pallet took the opportunity that presented itself when the No1 seed was knocked out. Pallet faced Burrows in the Quarter Final and although going 1-0 down she fought back, Burrows not being able to re-produce the excellent form she showed previously and didn’t have enough to push on, Pallet taking the match 3-1 and moving into the Semi’s. There she came up against Anna Kimberley, an unseeded player from Essex who outfought Kip Quiney in the Quarters, beating her 12-10 in the fifth after 46 minutes.

Pallet continued her good run and after 26 minutes she booked her place into the GU15 Final, Kimberley coming to an end of an unbelievable run. Pallet will face Eleanor Lake the No2 seed from Gloucester. Lake has had a tough tournament compared, a 3-2 win over Lucy Beecroft was then followed by a 3-2 win over Fiona May Murphy. Murphy raced into a 2-0 lead but Lake dug in and came back to win the game and we now see the reigning U13 National Champion aiming to collect the U15 title a year later.
Finals Line Up

Boys Under 15 –
No1 Richie Fallows (Essex) v No2 Ashley Davies (Derbyshire)

Girls Under 15 –

Boys Under 13 –

Junior Champs under way in Manchester
Chris Nutley reports on Day One

The biggest domestic junior event of the season got underway in earnest today when the Tecnifibre British Junior Championships kicked off in Manchester. The National Squash Centre and The Northern Club welcomed 300 of the very best young players from around Britain to fight it out for the 8 coveted junior national titles.

The Boys Under 13 seeds are now through to the quarters with all top seeds making it through to the last 8 bar one - 9/16 seed Laurence Green (Hertfordshire) defeating the 5/8 seed Tom Kirby (Hampshire) in a thrilling 5 setter, Green taking the fifth game 11/9 after 38 minutes.

The Girls' Under 13 draw has spookily progressed (well it is almost Halloween!) the exact same way as the BU13 with all top seeds coming through bar one.  9/16 seed Amelia Henley (Kent) taking out 5/8 seed Charlotte Allcock (Sussex) 3-0 in 18 minutes. She now faces the Welsh 3/4 seed Lowri Roberts in tomorrow’s Quarter Finals.

The major upsets of the day at The Northern Club came from the Girls' Under 15 draw.  No1 seed Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) crashing out in the 2nd round to 9/16 seed Katrina Burrows (Lancashire). Burrows lost the first but then came back in style, taking the next 3 games and the match 3-1 in 34 minutes. Kip Quiney (Gloucestershire), another 9/16 seed from the upper half has also taken out a top seed as she beat 3/4 seed Martha Possegger 3-0.

Qualifier Jack Jago (Essex) was the star of the Boys' Under 17 first round.  After unexpectedly qualifying on Thursday evening he dispatched 5/8 seed George Wileman (Yorkshire) in straight games in Round 1 of the main draw.  Unfortunately Jack’s spirited run was halted in Round 2 by 9/16 seed Tom Ford (Gloucestershire)  who now gate crashes the Quarter Finals where he will meet No2 seed Declan James (Nottingham).

It was a similar story in the Girls' Under 17’s with unseeded Charlotte Kirkwood (Yorkshire) beating 5/8 seed Jemma Ockwell (Hertfordshire) in R1 before losing out on a place in the quarters to 9/16 seed Issie Norman-Ross (Hampshire). Issie is joined in the last 8 by fellow 9/16 seed Brogan Lane (Hertfordshire) who comfortably beat 3/4 seed Jade Thompson (Yorkshire) in R2.

The Girls' Under 19 category progressed without incident as the top 8 seeds all booked their quarter final slots. No1 seed Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) is looking to complete her collection of all junior age group titles but faces stiff competition from Millie Tomlinson, the No2 seed from Derbyshire. Millie has had the better of Kimberley over recent months and will herself be looking for a third British title to add to her Under 13 and 15 successes. This category is looking extremely exciting with all of the quarter finalists capable of progressing.

Boys' Under 19 top seed Chris Fuller (Northamptonshire) withdraw earlier in the week with injury so Ben Coleman (Essex) and Charles Sharpes (Surrey) moved up to occupy the No1 and 2 positions respectively. Both progressed nicely as did all the other top 8 seeds with the exception of 5/8 Daniel McGinn (Cambridgeshire) who lost out to 9/16 David Haley (Wales).

Top juniors head to Manchester

Manchester welcomes the top British Junior squash players to the Tecnifibre British Junior Championships which runs from 29 October to 01 November. This event now features each junior category from Under 13 to Under 19 who will be competing for the Don Sanderson Under 19 Title.

The Northern Squash Club in Didsbury is the joint venue for the Championships, with all Under 13 and Under 15 matches being played there with the Under 17 and Under 19 playing at The National Squash Centre.

Tecnifibre remain the headline sponsors of the British Junior Squash Championships and will continue to sponsor the event until the end of the 2010/11 season. England Squash & Racketball are in the 2nd year of a three-year agreement with Smash Sports Limited, distributors of Tecnifibre in the UK & Ireland.

Number 1 seeds Ben Coleman (Essex) and Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) are favourites to claim the Don Sanderson Under 19 titles. Ben is still to win a British title at junior level and will face tough opposition from the No2 seed and current Under 17 champion Charles Sharpes (Surrey).

Kimberley will be hoping to go one better this year after finishing the runner up in last year’s event. She will once again renew her rivalry with No2 seed Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) who she defeated to claim the Under 17 Title 2 years ago.

The Under 17 category will see James Earles (Yorkshire) and Emily Whitlock (Cheshire) also hoping to claim the Under 17 titles they narrowly missed out on last year. James main opposition will come from Nottingham’s No2 seed Declan James while Lucy Townley (Cheshire) No2 seed in the GU17 could make it an all Cheshire final.

In the Under 15 category Richie Fallows (Essex) and Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) are seeded to meet in Sunday’s boys final with Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) seeded to meet current Girls Under 13 champion Eleanor Lake (Gloucestershire).

The Under 13 category will see both boys and girls No1 seeds meet Welsh opposition in the finals should the seedings go to plan. No1 seed James Peach (Yorkshire) possibly facing No2 seed Emyr Evans (Wales) with Girls No1 seed Eleanor Epke (Avon) possibly meeting No2 seed Elin Harlow (Wales) in the final.

The Championships involve a heavy schedule at The Northern Squash Club in Didsbury and The National Squash Centre in Manchester with matches running from 9.00am on Friday 29 October with the finals scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday 01 November. Any visiting spectators will be welcomed free of charge.

The Don Sanderson Trophy

The Under 19 players this week will be competing for the Don Sanderson Trophy. Don was a former Events Manager for the SRA, he was much liked and respected, and particularly passionate about junior squash.

Sadly Don was involved in a fatal road accident in late 1999. In 2001 the first Don Sanderson Trophy was contested for at the Junior National Championships, James Willstrop being the victor defeating Peter Barker in the Boys with Laura Jane Lengthorn beating Jenny Duncalf in the Girls Final.
