23-Aug, Finals:
Wales & France winners
[2] Joel Makin (Wal) 3-0 [3]
Joshua Larkin (Aus)
11-4, 11-5, 11-7 (50m)
[4] Cyrielle Peltier (Fra) 3-1 [1] Milou van der Heijden
(Ned)
6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 (46m)
The Women’s final saw top seed Milou
Van Der Heijden take on 4th seed Cyrielle Peltier from France. With
19 world ranking points separating the two (40 and 59 respectively),
the action began quickly with Van Der Heijden securing the early
break at 1-0.
Peltier came back strongly to win the next 2 games and lead 2-1. In
the fourth game Peltier skipped away to an 8-3 lead, but Van Der
Heijden fought back to 8 all. Peltier managed to hold her nerve and
took out her first PSA title 6-11 11-6 11-7 11-9.
“I’m so happy, this is my first win, it’s very important!”
In the Men’s Open final it was a battle of the 2nd and 3rd seeds.
Joel Makin hadn’t dropped a game leading in the final while his
opponent, Joshua Larkin had a tough 3/2 semi-final to dispose of top
seed Tayyab Aslam.
Makin took the first game 11-4 and continued his dominance with 11-5
in the second. In the third, players traded points until 6 all when
Makin again asserted control and took the match 11-4 11-5 11-7.

22-Aug, Semis:
Larkin keeps home hopes alive
France’s Cyrielle Peltier was
the first woman through to tomorrow’s Bendigo International Women’s
Open final after defeating Vanessa Chu 11-9 12-10 11-6. Although the
scores were close, Peltier was too strong late in each game and able
to close out the match.
The second women’s semi-final saw tournament giant killer Korean
Yang Yeon-Soo, ranked 231 in the world taking on top seed Milou
van der Heijden, ranked 42. This was Yang’s first PSA semi-final
and she acquitted herself well but in the end was unable to match
the experience of Milou going down 11-8 11-9 11-5.
In the first men’s semi-final, 2nd seed Joel Makin took on
8th seed Kush Kumar. With 41 world ranking points separating the two
players, Makin captured the first game 11-7. He followed up the next
two games 11-9 11-6 to book his first finals appearance in
Australia.
In the second semi-final, the last surviving Australian and 3rd
seed, Joshua Larkin was up against the tournament top seed
Tayyab Aslam from Pakistan. Larkin took the early lead but Aslam
fought back to take the second game. Larkin took the third and Aslam
again levelled at 2-all.
The final game went down to the wire and
with Aslam clearly upset with some decisions, Larkin took the match
3-2.

FROG'S TALK
Coucou Fram,

21-Aug, Quarters:
Aussies bow out in Bendigo
The Women’s
quarterfinals began with a win to unseeded Korean Yang Yeon-Soo who
surprised third seed Australian Sarah Cardwell in a 55-minute
five-setter.
4th seed, Frenchwoman Cyrielle Peltier, ousted a second Aussie,
Jessica Turnbull in straight games 3-0.
It was further bad news for the locals, when Vanessa Chu from Hong
Kong triumphed over 2nd seed Christine Nunn, with a hard fought 3-2
victory.
Top seed Milou van der Heijden accounted for Tong Tsz-Wing in
the last women’s quarterfinal.
In the Men’s quarters, Australian Josh Larkin overcame a sore hip
and Malaysian Valentino Bong to book a place in tomorrow’s
semi-finals.
The second match of the evening was not without drama as Englishman
Josh Masters had to deal with a blood nose as well as an in form
Kush Kumar. Masters had a tough assignment to get up after a
gruelling second round and was unable to match Kumar, going down 3-1
in 65 minutes.
Second seed Joel Makin made short work of Addeen Idrakie, beating
the Malaysian 11-0, 11-2, 11-2.
The final match of the evening saw top seed Tayyab Aslam up against
Korean Ko Youngjo. Aslam won the first two games relatively quickly
then dropped the third before recovering to take the match 3-1.
20-Aug, Round One:
Today was day one for the Men’s Open main draw of the inaugural Bendigo International Squash Championships held at the Bendigo
Squash Club courts in Barnard Street.
The top 8 seeds moved through to the second round but 6th seed
Englishman Jonathan Maloney was ousted by the in form Ko Youngjo
from Korea. Youngjo, fresh from a quarterfinals appearance at last
week’s Shepparton International, accounted for Maloney 3/1.
Australia’s top player and tournament no 3 seed, Joshua Larkin
had an effortless 11-3 11-2 11-5 win over Egyptian Omar Bahgat to
set up a second round encounter with Jaejin Yoo from Korea.
Shepparton International winner, Scot Dougie Kempsell, had a
lengthy first match against Czech Ondrej Uherka eventually
prevailing 3/1.
Tomorrow will see the first round for the Women’s event opening
proceedings at 10.30am with Australia’s Christine Nunn and Sarah
Cardwell keen to topple top seed Milou van der Heijden (NED). |
